Jack and Jill Politics: Bill Richardson Endorses Obama

  • Anonymous · 1 year ago
Bless you, Gov. Richardson. Bless you for having both courage and vision. Bless you for looking at what was a very ugly week for American politics and joining the chorus of "Enough, not this time."

    Yes, we can.
  • Ms.Martin · 1 year ago
Finally, considering his relationship with the Clintons, I know this had to be difficult for him.
  • Ms.Martin · 1 year ago
Hopefully, some others will come on board; he is the first since the Wright non-controversy that MSM turned into a witch hunt. This is just what Obama needs - party support.

I saw Roland on CNN tonight saying he had seen the sermon and that watched in its entirety it's not nearly as offensive as the 5 minute soundbite. I'm so glad Obama didn't abandon his pastor, I love him even more now.

Did anyone see Edwards on Leno?
  • rikyrah · 1 year ago
If ANYONE had told me that Richardson would endorse Obama before Edwards, I would have called them a liar.

    I'm really stunned about this.

Ms. Martin, I'm really pleased with Roland. He's doing his best to 'represent' with authenticity and truth.
  • JJ · 1 year ago
    Well damn...

I judt don't think there's much else to say.
  • B-Serious · 1 year ago
    1. Roland Martin has proven to be everything that Tavis Smiley should have been. When it comes to holding people accountable, I'm looking at Roland, NOT Tavis.

    2. Dare I say . . . Obama/Richardson '08?????

Think about it. Are we ready? It would be amazing to think we could have a black president and hispanic v.p. Besides that, Richardson could bring a lot to the table. I'm thinking he could bring a lot of the hispanic vote as well as (hopefully) some southwestern states. Or. . . would the vision of a black/brown ticket be more than enough to push those "blue collar whites" over to McCain?

    Talk about a black/brown connection!

Still, my guess is that conventional wisdom says Obama chooses someone with a lot of national security cred. Or at least someone who people view as "tough." Obama/Webb still sounds good too.

    3. Joe Scarborough is doing his best to impersonate Fox News. I almost had hope for him. But when you try to put Obama's grandma comment OVER a security breach by the state department . . . you're pretty much showing your hand, there. EVEN Tucker Carlson had good enough sense to know which is the more important story.
  • Ronnie B · 1 year ago
This is great news. Although, if leadership is what our country really wants, it's not a surprise at all.

Asi y todo, mil gracias a Gobernador Richardson.

    Si, se puede!
  • rikyrah · 1 year ago
I had thought about Obama/Richardson....but, are people ready?

I still think about Obama/Webb too.
  • Ronnie B · 1 year ago
I had thought about Obama/Richardson....but, are people ready?

    In a word: no.

There's a sizeable population who can't even come to grips with Barack being the inevitable nominee of the Dem Party.

They damn sure aren't ready for a Black and a Mexican as leaders of the country.
  • Anonymous · 1 year ago
Well, this makes my day get off to a great start, Governor Richardson was my first choice for the nominee in the first place, so, to see a man with his values endorse Obama over his close friend, HRC, speaks loud and clear.
  • Craig Hickman · 1 year ago
I think Webb would be an interesting VP candidate. Another smart leader who happens to be great writer.
  • Big Man · 1 year ago
If Obama and Richardson ran on the same ticket they would lock up a very large portion of the minority vote. A huge portion of it.

That would be an interesting campaign.
  • Admiral Komack · 1 year ago
    "John Edwards, where you at?"
    -Who cares; I know I don't.
  • The Christian Progressive Libe · 1 year ago
Ouch! That has to hurt the Borg Queen, because as goes Richardson, so goes the Hispanics, with very few exceptions.

In other news, regarding this breach of privacy regarding Obama's passport by the State Department, once again, Condi Rice is saying she knew nothing about the snooping.

Additionally, the other tidbit that's being ignored is that the private contractors who employed the snoops in the State Department, is a company out of Little Rock, Arkansas, and were big donors to the Clinton machine when the Big Dog was Governor, and this company, Sterling or Stanley Associates, were often contracted by the Governor or the State Government, to dig up information on their opponents that could be used to damage them in a campaign.

Start connecting the dots, y'all. I'll try to find the link.
  • Phia · 1 year ago
Thank you Gov. Richardson! As we discuss if America is "ready", keep in mind that both Obama and Richardson are BIRACIAL. I know visually, it can be difficult to remember, but it is a fact :)
  • The Christian Progressive Libe · 1 year ago
I'm thinking Obama/Richardon ticket, with the next Attorney General being John Edwards.

Secretary of State - Joe Biden

Secretary of Defense - Jim Webb

Supreme Court Nominee - Anita Hill or Lani Guinier

    Surgeon General - Donna Christian-Christensen

Secretary of Labor - Dennis Kucinich

Secretary of Transportation - someone Obama owes a favor

    Secretary of Education -

Treasury Secretary - Warren Buffett or George Soros

    Anyone else got suggestions???

If the Democratic Party wants to survive they will make Obama the nominee. If they don’t, many of the latinos, young voters, as well as the black voters are going to defect and join the Independent Party. Which will destroy the Democratic Party. Also, Hillary has behaved and ran her campaign more like a Republican. As a matter of fact, my vote was with her until I heard the first debate last year. What I heard from HRC were ideas and an attitude that reflects the Republicans (invade Iran, Iraq), I immediately realized Obama was the answer. She’s a moderate Republican running as a Democrat and piggy-backing off her husbands fame. Let me tell you, Hillary is way too confident about the Latin vote, especially in Florida. What Mrs. Clinton failed to realize is that the Latin community consists of Black Latinos (Cuban, Dominican, Puerto Rican, Brazilian), she lost much of the black latino support when she started the subliminal race baiting. We’re not as uneducated and naive as she would like to think we are. HRC’s negativity, self-entitlement and constant belittling of the young generation’s optimism and intelligence, as well as her mud-slinging a fellow Democrat, will be the downfall of the Democratic Party. She has no chance in Hell of beating McCain because she’s too much like McCain and nothing like her husband Bill.

where are you John Edwards, indeed!!!

i have been waiting, waiting, waiting....

on some "leaders" in the democratic party to step forward, speak out, and end the bloodletting.

I think this took guts on Bill's part.... especially considering his friendship with the Clintons.

and, o yes, he should keep the beard...even when he is Vice President!

now, the next one who should step up is John Edwards to slam the nail in the coffin of the old politics!

    where are you John?
  • Nita · 1 year ago
If Richardson did this in spite of what has gone down in New Mexico with the screwed up caucus out here.........maybe he does know something.

It's definitely a blow to the 'Borg Queen' (lol christian progressive). I'm with Rikyrah, I wouldn't have expected this either.

    What happens now?

@joe, i agree about the beard. he looks attractive and manly with the beard, where other men would look sloppy. i wasn't feeling it as he was growing it, but with it in full bush, it looks good on him.

I'm a huge "Webb" fan...Obama/Webb was originally my dream ticket...but reality is setting in...and we all know that the Clintons can be REAL gangsters...and they need redemption really Bad___.

An Obama/Clinton Ticket will be necessary to heal the party...and with the economy tanking like it is right now, America will appreciate having a Clinton on the ticket.

    POTUS - Barack Obama

    VPOTUS - Hillary Clinton

    SecOfState - Bill Richardson

Treasury - Robert Rubin RETURNS!!! (or Chris Dodd)

    Defense - Wesley Clark

HHS/"Health Care Czar" - John Edwards

    SCOTUS Nominee: Laurence Tribe
  • Denise · 1 year ago
CPL: If Senator Obama is elected, I agree that appointing Lani Guinier to the SCOTUS would be absolutely brilliant! I also think John Edwards would make a fine AG.

That said, I am quite sure that intense cut-throat jockeying is underway for both cabinet and sub-cabinet slots. Remember, these the banner waivers are not hanging around for nothing.

  • Anonymous · 1 year ago
Congratulations to Obama, again, for getting Governor Richardson's endorsement. -- And thank you Governor for your endorsement. Once again, another person who knows Hillary and Bill the best is crossing over to support Obama. Richardson has endorsed Obama because he is a "once-in-a-lifetime leader" who can unite the nation and restore America's international leadership. He also applauded Obama for being the only person in politics to give a honest and thoughtful discussion on race in this country. Even if you don't agree with what Obama said, at least he had the courage for braving the subject and to Richardson this shows leadership.

On the side, Penn made a statement that showed that the Clintons really know how to kick you under the bus. Penn "didn't think it was a significant endorsement." But then again, nothing is significant unless Hillary wins it or get its. If you are not on their team, you are not significant. Her campaign appears to forget that Hillary is runnibg to be President of the United States of all the people-- even those who do not endorse her. Penn also said that "Perhaps the time when he could have been most effective has long since past" is short sighted. The primaries are not over and the general election has not yet begun. The significance is to be judged by whom is receiving the endorsement, not the other way around. Sounds like sour grapes to me.

Whatever John Edwards decides, he must be respected for that decision. He is a good person. We are a united nation and we can have different political views.

Finally! Someone in the press admits what we've known since the Wisconsin primary. Media bias, my ass.

One big fact has largely been lost in the recent coverage of the Democratic presidential race: Hillary Rodham Clinton has virtually no chance of winning... Journalists, for instance, have become partners with the Clinton campaign in pretending that the contest is closer than it really is.

Oh yes, I'm feeling the beard too!

They look good together, they sound good together - young and vibrant and the energy of that audience is undeniable. They make McCain look 171.

Try try all they might, this movement is back on the track!

I don't think Edwards matters now. He's weak!

Scarborough is so overcome with jealousy that he has lost all self-control. (I'm sure he fantasized about the love Obama's receiving). I'm not letting Tucker off the hook either. They are so mad that they can't continue beat the Wright drum non-stop they can't hide their contempt for this man that so many people love. HATERS!

Roland Martin deserves all the support that we can give him (I've sent him emails thanking him for keeping the conversation as honest as possible.).

He has consistently been there to push back against attempts to portray Obama as something other than what he is.

He has consistently fought against the AA community from being portrayed as something other than what it is.

I think Martin deserves his own spot on CNN. He would bring some seriousness and truth to their journalism.

Rikyrah - thanks for keeping it real and bringing us stories that we can discuss openly and truthfully and a place where people of like minds can agree and disagree.

If not for this blog and a community to discuss my concerns and opinions with, I would have lost my mind thinking that I was the only person who could see what's really be going on during this election cycle.

Sorry, Webb, but Hillary burned every bridge she had to cross, and is well on the way to setting fire to the one she's walking on now.

    Rubin for Tresury Secy? LMAO

Clinton has no place and no business being on an Obama ticket, period. She started the flame throwing and can't stand the pain of burning herself with the bombs she's thrown.

Tribe can run a secondary post in the Justice Department - you will need real competent lawyers to clean up the mess left by Gonzales and continued by Mukasey.

John Edwards for AG. 'Nuff said.

Wes Clark as Sec Def - only if Webb doesn't want the job again.

Guinier or Anita Hill for SCOTUS. Especially if Clarence has to sit there and see Anita in meetings on a daily basis - he'd be the youngest justice to voluntarily quit because he can't take the pressure of having to face homegirl countering his votes, opinions and demonstrating just how much of a legal incompetent he is. In a just world, Clarance Thomas couldn't get a job judging the dogs at the Westminster Dog Show, let alone in a civil or federal court.

I want to hear some more suggestions for the new Administration that's not a Hillary Clinton or a John McCain one...
  • Ms.Martin · 1 year ago
I will never support a ticket with Hillary Clinton on it.

I will not reward her for beastly behavior.

She's really a Republican anway; she will probably secretly work for McCain to be elected even if she's selected as VP.

I DON'T TRUST HER, and no one in there right mind should.

Great endorsement, but keep Richardson off the ticket. Some of us still remember how bumbling he was as Secretary of Energy when he demonized Wen Ho Lee by leaking news of the investigation to the media.

Plus, he failed to accomplish anything (as far as I know) in terms of ending our addiction to foreign oil.

Pick somebody from a state where Obama is going to have a harder time winning, e.g. the Carolinas, Virginia, the Dakotas, etc.
  • Anonymous · 1 year ago
Penn's comments underline exactly how Clinton and her campaign see people -- expendable. Here is Penn about Richardson's endorsement:

"The time that he could have been effective has long since passed… I don’t think it is a significant endorsement in this environment."

They only saw Richardson as a Hispanic, a piece of machinery. Of course, with most of the states with a significant Hispanic population now in the rear-view mirror, of course Richardson is no longer of any use to them.

What a horrible bunch of small people in her campaign.
  • Angela · 1 year ago
I watched and it was wonderful. I really got a kick out of Richardson's story about how Obama helped him out while he was still running instead letting Richardson be embarrassed. It was great.

By the way, in case you haven't seen it, the WaPo Fact Checker gave Clinton 4 pinocchios (the most you can get) about her claim that she dodged sniper fire while landing on her trip to Bosnia. The trip that Sinbad was on....seems Clinton is the only one on the trip recalling such an incident! They even have a picture of her being greeted by an 8 year old. You have to see!
  • Denise · 1 year ago
"Tribe can run a secondary post in the Justice Department - you will need real competent lawyers to clean up the mess left by Gonzales and continued by Mukasey..."

Likewise with Professor Charles Ogletree. Another striking example of someone generally regarded as sharp, competent, and dedicated to using the law for the benefit of others.

Richardson called for Democrats to stop fighting among themselves and to come together for the good of the party.

Boycott MSNBC except for Olberman. Scar, Buchanan, and Carlson are getting face time to appeal to the Faux News Bigots.

CNN is asking has Barack Obama put the Rev. Wright controversy behind him. The question should have been is the media going to allow Obama to put the Wright controversey behind him. Boycott CNN except for Roland Martin.

    From Orcinus.com

Probably the most remarkable aspect of the recent feeding frenzy about Barack Obama's so-called "pastor problem" -- besides the agility and smarts that Obama has displayed in handling it -- is not as much what it reveals about the state of race in America as what it reveals about the state of the American media.

The Washington Post's report on Obama's speech observed that this was a controversy that "threatens to engulf his presidential candidacy." Yet as far as anyone can tell, it was having only a marginal effect on the polls in the race before it blew up on the networks, and it was not generated by either of Obama's political opponents, or by any particular interest groups.

No, this is a controversy cooked up almost entirely within the media realm. Once they sank their fangs into it, the whole zombielike corps of pundits, cable talking heads, and radio talk-show hosts couldn't let go of it. And equally remarkable was the bias that was on display in discussing it: News anchors and talking heads flatly referred to the Rev. Jeremiah Wright's videotaped remarks as "anti-American," "hate-filled," "vicious," "offensive," and so on and on.
  • Webb · 1 year ago
    @CPL,
if putting Anita Hill on the SC would make Clarence quit, then I'm all for that! There should be petitions/campaigns to have him impeached from the court for lack of participation.

I would rather wait until Barack has the nomination sealed, but in light of the FL/MI do-over failures and Richardson's endorsement today, I'll say the following:

I sense that many people here fear that HRC would "outshine" or "undercut" Barack if she were the VP. Yes, Billary is a political gangster...no doubt...but the Clintons are not "once-in-a-lifetime" leaders.

As Richardson put it, Barack Obama is a "Once in a Lifetime" Leader that can heal and bind a party, a country, and a world. I GENUINELY BELIEVE THAT...it is a messianic vision greater than any political gangster roaming our landscape...it's greater than race baiting, partisanship, or religious intolerance. I AM FULLY INVESTED.

For those who want to punish the Clintons, I'll only encourage you to come closer to Christ on this Easter weekend and embrace redemption...acknowledge the transformative power of redeeming yourself.

If you think that Obama doesn't have the political fortitude to "handle" the Clintons, then you're really discounting his abilities. You are "sleeping on a brother" if you believe that. For those that don't realize it BY NOW, Barack Obama's GOT Skillz...you'd better appreciate that.
  • Ronnie B · 1 year ago
I'm in agreement about keeping Clinton off the ticket. If the Angry White Right will go after Barack just for going to a Black church, there's no telling what they'd do with Clinton as a target.

Moreoever, she and her surrogates are the prime suspects behind all the racializing of Barack and his campaign. She has no business being a national leader after all of this.

One big fact has largely been lost in the recent coverage of the Democratic presidential race: Hillary Rodham Clinton has virtually no chance of winning... Journalists, for instance, have become partners with the Clinton campaign in pretending that the contest is closer than it really is.

And this has GOT to stop. Now, I know that the best way to change Washington is to vote out the bad, and vote in the good. But if we the people don't significantly change media, then change in Washington won't happen. I don't know the conventional wisdom of changing from a grassroots level, but there have to be ways.

Having folks in strategic places who are, at least, not anti-Barack is good. But media reform goes way beyond Barack. A change is needed behind the scenes at editors' desks; in program director offices; and in the corner offices. Corporate sponsors need significant pressure to advertise with responsible and diversely managed media outlets.

Again, I have no idea what I'm talking about, but I do know that media reform MUST accompany political reform.
  • Ms.Martin · 1 year ago
    Ronnie B

"Corporate sponsors need significant pressure to advertise with responsible and diversely managed media outlets."

This is exactly how you stop the media. The reporting directive will certainly change when a company's bottom line is effected (especially in this economy) and when the media has no more advertisers to support their politically biased coverage.

With all the spending power that blacks have, I suggest we get started.

If consumers start talking the talk about not supporting companies who advertise with these vultures, it will get around and things will change!
  • Ms.Martin · 1 year ago
Let me just add to my last comment:

We then become the special interest group that demands something for our money: fair and accurate reporting.

The Wright coverage has been unfair, irresponsible and just ludicrous. It is not meant to inform, rather to ignite and persuade. That is unacceptable and we "the grass roots movement" can stop it.

We need to start investigating the sponsors, contact them regarding our outrage of the obvious irresponsible reporting and let them know we won't support them if they support media outlets who bring us the news through as narrow a lens as they have and then make good on those promises.

I would like to see a special program devoted to what's going on in churches all over America. I would like to see Reverend Wright's 30 years profiled.

We need to tell Roland Martin, he will certainly let them know.
  • onein4 · 1 year ago
I'm glad Gov. Richardson endorced, but could he have done it before Texas? I think an Obama/Richardson ticket would be too much for America. Remember, white people can live in neighborhoods w/ people of color until it reaches a certain % - then their out! Hopefully, Hispanics/Latinos will follow his lead and vote Obama in November.
    Si se puede is right!

I'm so glad to see that you guys posted this here. If you haven't heard Richardson's endorsement speech, you can find it on Obama's site. It was great. I loved the part where he discussed how Obama saved him by prompting him in a presidential debate instead of throwing him "under the bus."

Now, I hope that Richardson will go out and actively campaign for Obama in the remaining states and in the fall.

I believe that there can be successful black-brown coalitions!
  • rikyrah · 1 year ago
When this all began, I really really liked an Obama/Richardson ticket, because he had the foreign policy credentials Obama lacked.

Folks told me I was crazy - a Black and Latino on the same ticket?

Ok, so it's out there. But, think about it. Obama would drive up the Black get-out-the-vote in the South. Richardson would drive up the Latino get-out-the-vote in the Southwest. With the Black and Latino vote, possibly Texas could be in play.

Now, the Webb thing intrigues me, cause I admit it. I want the picture.

The picture of Webb and his wife, on the lawn of the Obama house in Chicago after they've announced it.

With Webb being the ONLY White person in the picture. It would crack me up to no end, but I dunno if America could take it.

I'd be honest with you, if I thought he'd take a paycut and leave his millions, I totally wish Obama would appoint John Rogers, Jr. as Secretary of the Treasury. Or Mellody Hobson - though I think some folks' heads would explode.

Bill Richardson Calls Out Clinton Advisor

(CNN) – Bill Richardson criticized a Clinton campaign adviser Friday for suggesting his endorsement of Barack Obama is insignificant.

"I resent the fact that the Clinton people are now saying that my endorsement is too late because I only can help with Texans — with Texas and Hispanics, implying that that's my only value," the New Mexico governor told CNN's John King.

"That's typical of some of his advisers that kind of turned me off."Earlier Friday, Clinton campaign senior strategist Mark Penn said he thought Richardson's endorsement came too late to make an impact.

    http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2008/03/21/richardson-calls-out-clinton-adviser/
