Jack and Jill Politics: Black Reaction Online to Joe Biden as VP

  • rikyrah · 1 year ago
Thanks for the roundup, Jill. I'm not thrilled, but I'm not on the ledge. Hillpatine and Bayh would have put even me on the ledge. So, I gotta shrug too.
  • jemarion · 1 year ago
just curious, who would have been your choice and why?
  • rikyrah · 1 year ago
First Choice: Richardson. Took me months for people to convince me that America wasn't ready for a Black/Brown ticket. And just when I gave it up, Richardson came out and endorsed Obama and weathered the ' Judas' storm against him and made me want him all over again. I had electoral college fantasies about Obama/Richardson. Basically, I saw the Western USA, and Texas turn blue with Richardson.

Once I gave up Richardson, then I wanted Webb. He could talk to White folks in Appalachia. Would have been a bulldog. He would not have been controllable, but he would have kicked ass all over this country dogging McAncient and the GOP.

After Webb, I wanted the Cowboy Governor of Montana. Smart, businessman, populist...he has a 70% rating in MONTANA AS A DEMOCRAT. And, he spoke Arabic. That whole reconfiguration of the electoral map thing with the Mountain and Plains States.

If it had to be a woman, I wanted Sebelius.
  • The Caped Composer · 1 year ago
I wanted the "Cowboy Governor of Montana," Brian Schweitzer, as well, but I see the wisdom of picking Biden. And, frankly, it works out fine for Schweitzer, since Biden will be too old to succeed Obama in 8 years, leaving the door wide open. Hey, maybe Biden can retire after serving one term as VP, and Obama can pick Schweitzer for the second term! Hey, I can dream, can't I?

And, as far as Richardson is concerned, methinks he's bound for the Cabinet-- SecState, perhaps?

The Field's Al Giordano did a post this past week about all the positive folks that would move UP in the Senate if Biden were selected and Obama elected.

If It's Biden, There's a Consolation Prize for Dodd and Maybe for You, Too
  • msmartin · 1 year ago
Thanks for responses. I'm not that excited, but am glad that he has somebody who's not afraid to kick ass and take names. And for vanity's sake, his wife is a pretty blond who makes Cindy look as old as McCain and his little girls will make a great picture with the Obama girls - the look of the future.
  • TruthSeeker · 1 year ago
Yeah...I was just saying to myself what a great looking family he has! I read somewhere that male legislators with daughters tend to be more feminist minded in their voting records. I get the feeling that will Obama and Biden, they'll always be thinking of their little girls in every policy..because neither has enormous wealth to shield them from the bruises of life.
  • msmartin · 1 year ago
You're right Truth. The fact that neither has neither has enormous wealth should also prove to be helpful for the rest of the nation who also does not have enormous wealth. At least they get it, unlike those with so many houses that can't remember how many. Those that are so far removed from what it is to struggle to provide for a family.

I've read that, too. I wonder if there were a way to get that message out there.
  • pjamma · 1 year ago
Aren't those his granddaughters? He has two sons with his first wife (and of course the daughter that died along with his wife in that accident) and a daughter with the second who is about 27. He has 5 grandchildren.
  • msmartin · 1 year ago
Maybe they are. I just assumed they were his daughters. I guess because his wife looks so young.
  • pjamma · 1 year ago
She does look really young to be about 50 or so. Much better then Cindy, IMO.

I really like the selection of Biden for Obama's running mate. I think Obama has vision and Biden has depth. Together they will make a winning team. I also see how Biden can pivot based on his Iraq vote as well as McCain's by saying that years of experience do not necessarily add up to good judgment, such that Obama has demonstrated he has the vision and judgement to lead on day one. Further, Biden can attack McCain on the Iraq vote because he unlike McCain has acknowledged that it was a mistake to give Bush carte blanche authority to wage war. Needless to say, Biden has and will continue to have a vested interest in bringing the troops on since his son is headed to Iraq. I trust him to take positions for the good of America and not the oil industry.

On the other hand Biden is in bed with the banking industry and it is the lack of regulation of that sector which has resulted in the devastating mortage security backed sector meltdown. Hopefully, though by being VP Biden is no longer beholden to those interests and will be key in changing the consumer bankruptcy laws because he does know where all the pittfualls and weaknesses of the credit card and banking industry lie. In other words, he probably has the ammo to twist arms and get things done. He may turn out to be as good as LBJ was in that regard when it came to working with Congress and particularly the Senate.

I like that Biden is Irish Catholic as that may inspire Catholics to come on board despite his not being pro-life and being for civil unions. I think Biden knows how to talk to working class America's who believe they are entitled on the basis of race i.e. white working class. Biden has made remarks that are racially offensive, yet his deeds indicate that he his heart is in the right place even if his words sometimes belie that. The good part of this is that Biden actually speaks with the same racially biased working class sentiments he was raised with and therefore will be seen as genuine and as 'like us' to the working class. So, I am excited about this selection.

I do not doubt that there will be lots of vicissitudes in the next 100days but overall, my sense is that this is a winning ticket. Above all, I beleive Biden will be loyal to Obama and in some sense guard his administration against the betrayals that the Clintons have no problem in continuing to create.

Maybe the Irish Catholic will feel like African Americans and Latinos, this is a lifetime moment for them to have another Irish Catholic in the White House and for people of color to have their first President of color.

This is OUR moment...our time is NOW...Obama/Biden '08... Yes, We. CAN.

  • pjamma · 1 year ago
I've found (in my personal life) that Irish Catholics and African Americans get along very well. I'm not sure why although one of my best friends relates it back to the potato famine and being considered second class citizens in Europe. Maybe it is the struggle by our great and great-great grandparents, even though one came to America as slaves, and the other, well, through Ellis Island but neither had a history that was easy. And both have a strong connection to faith and love of family. It works, I guess.

I like the choice. and I believe that Senator Obama has to be a little more self-deprecating and turn around what Senator Biden said about him. He said that Senator Obama was clean and articulate. Well Senator Obama should say yes, indeed. everyone knows I'm so fresh and so clean, clean. As a matter of fact, if I were Senators O'Biden I would make a video using OutKast's song, with Senators O'Biden touting how fresh and clean they are. And by clean I mean cleanly dressed and articulate. So take the negative and make it a positive. That's what Senator Obama needs to do, laugh at himself ,, and in doing so, Senator Obama may make some new friends.
  • taritac · 1 year ago
I really am excited. Biden is a good yang to Obama's yin. They are both exciting (obviously, mileages vary on this point), but they are exciting in different ways. Obama is exciting because of his ability to inspire, his focus on change, his inclusiveness. He embodies, "The Future of America." Biden is old-school, but kind of a wild card, independent thinker. They will work beautifully together. Biden will be a good adviser to Obama, but Obama is a leader who can take the advice of the best minds and develop sound strategy.

I can understand some people's "meh" reactions, but I don't really see where Slant Truth is coming from (I don't read his/her blog, so I don't know him/her at all). How can any VP pick be a deal breaker? If he wanted Obama to find a person who has never said anything racially offensive, then he was bound to be sorely disappointed because there aren't very many mute people in politics. Obama is just not the type to get bent out of shape about every racially insensitive slight. If he did, he could not be president. He knows he has to let that stuff slide off his back and keep it moving.

    Anyone watching Fox?

I can barely take CNN. Just wondering if anyone's brave enough to watch Fox.

I watched MSNBC mostly....then I turned to CNN and Wolfe Blitzer managed to break his record and get on my last nerve within 5 minutes.

Applause for lasting that long. I could only stomach 2 minutes top. I actually turned to Fixed Noise and watched for about 5 minutes. Seriously I can't deal with these squawkers. They don't know anything.

We should all remember that Obama has been in politics a long time, and he knows what it takes to win (hence him defeating the Clinton machine). Given his experience in elected office and my inexperience, I'm going to trust that Obama has made the right choice. Remember, all the candidates had to be vetted. In the end, maybe he had the least amount of negatives while adding the most to the ticket.

While we should look at his choices critically, we shouldn't assume he doesn't know what he's doing. In other words, while upholding the democratic process, we need to be confident in our candidate. There are certainly things going on behind the scenes that we don't know about, so when he and his team of advisors make a decision about winning the election, I give them the benefit of the doubt.

OK, the guy grates on my nerves half the time, but he brings a lot to this party and I welcome him to the Obama campaign: Welcome VP Joe. And, one more thing, Joe Biden says he's wrong when he fucks up...and, you cannot say that about many politicians...

I am very happy that it is NOT Hillary Clinton on the ticket. Regardless of what racially insensitive remarks Biden made in the past or the fact that he felt Barack was not experienced enough to be president (based on his pre-Clinton machine destruction knowledge), I strongly feel that he will have Barack's back and at age 65, he will not have his own agenda to be President.
Who best can go up against John McCain than a fellow senator who has been his friend and fellow senate member for 35 years? Who? Who can be a better attack dog for Barack?
  • GreenLadyHere · 1 year ago
    Maurice: ". . . NOT Hillary . . ." CO-SIGN!!!! :>) :>)
  • Shannon Clark · 1 year ago
While I see the strategic reasons for this pick my one disappointment is that the Democratic party may be setting themselves up for a similar problem the Republicans are facing in 8 years - namely a VP who is not a logical successor to the President 8 years later.

But given that this won't be a problem for 8 years and assumes two Democratic victories (and equally nice two Republican defeats) I'm not overly concerned - but I would have preferred to see a VP who after 8 years in the White House would have been a very strong and logical candidate. Perhaps we'll see a change of VP in the second term (but again I'm perfectly happy to focus on winning this round first)

Overall I think Biden does offer some good balance, especially strong international experience, but I do worry about whether he does open up the campaign to new vectors of attack and/or minimizes some of the strength of having a very clear difference and a very stark choice (i.e. smart, younger vs old and not as with it).

Guess I'll be learning more about Biden and his positions, past etc in the coming months. My personal hope had been also that Obama might have gone with a female Governor which would have also given us a nice non-Washington voice on the ticket (and I suspect cemented a lot of Hillary's voters who may have been still on the fence).

It will be interesting as well to see what happens post-Olympics and conventions.
  • majorman · 1 year ago
I think Biden serves one term. Meanwhile Sebelius is a Cabinet Appointee (she's done with governorship this fall). Obama-Sebeluis in 2012. Sebelius-Warner 2016...

But, let's not get ahead of ourselves. Obama has the "Kerry States" but still needs a few more electoral votes. He's tied/leading in IA, VA, MT, NV, NM, CO, AK...I predict a landslide 300+ EVs. But it will take grassroots focus on key states.
  • cheryl aka jill tubman · 1 year ago
Thanks for stopping by Shannon. Yeah, I was half-hoping for a woman even if I knew it was unlikely and a non-Washington voice.
  • dazey · 1 year ago
I'm sorry folks, but this is a huge disappointment to me. What happened to "Change we can believe in"? There is not one iota of change here -- this is old boy network at its best. I cannot and will not vote for this ticket.
  • whiterosebuddy · 1 year ago
Dazey there has got to be someone to push through the change ideas that knows where the bodies are buried to get things done in politics. Biden is that guys. We do not want Obama to be like the Billary..loves of ideas without the political clout and finesse to get things done.
You need to come on out and vote for this ticket but it truly does represent change. Obama is the President, not Biden.
  • skepticalbrotha · 1 year ago
While I concede the point that an affirmative vote is required for this ticket, I must stress that we'll get next to nothing progressive out of these two unless we go back to our roots and engage in movement politics. Working the grassroots for Obama is great, but the campaign itself is not a social movement.
  • Michelle · 1 year ago
skepticalbrotha, what movements are currently active that you feel would be good for this purpose of engaging in movement politics in this context? Or do you think something new would be required (if so what do you see as steps toward it/them)?
  • Miranda · 1 year ago
You were never gonna vote for Obama. Why are you pretending like you ever were?
  • D.Quayle · 1 year ago
Biden will be 66 in November, does anyone think he is planning to serve 1 full term as vp, let alone two? I suspect at some point he will make way for someone who would make a good future POTUS. Is there any precedent for this?
  • pjamma · 1 year ago
Considering there is no precedent for a black man as President or a woman getting 18 million primary votes I wouldn't consider an intentional one term VP with a replacement being sought out day one to be a stretch.
  • pjamma · 1 year ago
Here's my thought. If Hill were the VP I would expect sniper fire to hit Obama sometime around June '09. I think Biden, for the first time in his life, will be okay being number 2.

Also, I was impressed with Biden in the debates and really liked him after his apperence on the View. I can get past his stupid comments because we all make stupid comments. I have less trust in those that are always politicaly correct because that is not natural or real.

I think Biden is an asset to the ticket and look forward to voting for Obama-Biden. (I have found myself calling them Obama-O'Biden today. Is it just me?)
  • JJai · 1 year ago
  • Liza · 1 year ago
I saw that. Ben seems to have a fascination with us over here in the black political world. It's quite amusing.

As for Jill, I kind of have to disagree with you on Biden. I want Obama in the White House sooooo bad that I am willing to put up with Joe to get there.
  • JJai · 1 year ago
I am cool with JoBama. I think Biden will do his pit bull job well and perhaps assuage the lingering anxieties that some caucasians and others have about Obama. I could tell that Chris Matthews was thrilled about Biden. Matthews is just the type of guy that Obama needs to win this election in November.
  • TariqNelson · 1 year ago
I must say that I was not impressed with the pick, but hope for the best
  • keith · 1 year ago
I wanted Wes Clark. He gives Obama the same foreign policy/nat'l security cred that Biden does, but without the baggage. Obama/Clark would've gotten me psyched in November. But Joe Biden? To quote McCain: "That's not change we can believe in."

THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY AWAITS SENATOR OBAMA'S LEADERSHIP ON THIS US JUDICIAL INJUSTICE ???

LETS ALL HOPE OUR INTERNATIONAL MEDIA FRIENDS ALSO SHOW AN INTEREST IN REPORTING ON THIS AMERICAN HORROR FACING THESE (TENS OF THOUSANDS) FORGOTTEN AND TRAPPED POORER AMERICANS, AND HOW THIS POSSIBLE FUTURE PRESIDENTIAL CONTENDER HANDLES THIS VERY SERIOUS ISSUE FACING AMERICA'S LATINO AND BLACK AMERICAN COMMUNITIES ????

***WITH 80% OF THE BLACK AMERICAN VOTERS SAYING THEY SUPPORT SENATOR OBAMA IN THIS PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION, IT IS ONLY FAIR FOR EVERYONE TO KNOW PRIOR BEING ELECTED OUR NEXT PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES HOW THIS DEMOCRATIC SENATOR TRULY FEELS ABOUT THIS AMERICAN JUDICIAL HORROR CONTINUING TO INFLICT GRAVE HARM ON THE BLACK AMERICAN FAMILIES AND THEIR COMMUNITIES NATIONWIDE ??????

*** WHEN GOD’S FACE BECAME VERY RED ***
THE US SUPREME COURT GAVE ENEMY COMBATANTS FEDERAL APPEAL HC RIGHTS LAWYERS AND PROPER ACCESS TO US FEDERAL COURTS,AND POORER AMERICANS (MANY EVEN ON DEATH ROW) ARE DENIED PROPER FEDERAL APPEAL LEGAL REPRESENTATION TO OUR US FEDERAL COURTS OF APPEAL, AND ROTTING IN AMERICAN PRISONS NATIONWIDE ?????????

**** INNOCENT AMERICANS ARE DENIED REAL HC RIGHTS WITH THEIR FEDERAL APPEALS !
THE AMERICAN PEOPLE ARE $LOWLY FINDING OUT HOW EA$Y IT I$ FOR MIDDLE CLA$$ AND WORKING POOR AMERICAN$ TO FALL VICTIM TO OUR U$ MONETARY JUDICIAL $Y$TEM.

****WHEN THE US INNOCENT WERE ABANDONED BY THE GUILTY ****
The prison experts have reported that there are 100,000 innocent Americans currently being falsely imprisoned along with the 2,300,000 total US prison population nationwide.
Since our US Congress has never afforded poor prison inmates federal appeal legal counsel for their federal retrials, they have effectively closed the doors on these tens of thousands of innocent citizens ever being capable of possibly exonerating themselves to regain their freedom through being granted new retrials.

This same exact unjust situation was happening in our Southern States when poor and mostly uneducated Black Americans were being falsely imprisoned for endless decades without the needed educational skills to properly submit their own written federal trial appeals.

This devious and deceptive judicial process of making our poor and innocent prison inmates formulate and write their own federal appeal legal cases for possible retrials on their state criminal cases,is still in effect today even though everyone in our US judicial system knows that without proper legal representation, these tens of thousands of innocent prison inmates will be denied their rightful opportunities of ever being granted new trials from our federal appeal judges!!

Sadly, the true US *legal* Federal Appeal situation that occurs when any of our uneducated American prison inmates are forced to attempt to submit their own written Federal Appeals (from our prisons nationwide) without the assistance of proper legal counsel, is that they all are in reality being denied their legitimate rights for Habeas Corpus and will win any future Supreme Court Case concerning this injustice!

For our judicial system and our US Congressional Leaders Of The Free World to continue to pretend that this is a real and fair opportunity for our American Middle Class and Working Poor Citizens, only delays the very needed future change of Federal Financing of all these Federal appeals becoming a normal formula of Our American judicial system.

It was not so very long ago that Public Defenders became a Reality in this country.Prior that legal reality taking place, their were also some who thought giving anyone charged with a crime a free lawyer was a waste of taxpayers $$.

This FACADE and HORROR of our Federal Appeal proce$$ is not worthy of the Greatest Country In The World!

***GREAT SOCIETIES THAT DO NOT PROTECT EVEN THEIR INNOCENT, BECOME THE GUILTY!

MSNBC guest: Biden’s racial gaffes are rather refreshingly politically incorrect, aren’t they? “The gaffes actually show one of his strengths.”

    Pretzel Logic.

"All of which points back to the animating tenet in “liberal” ideology — namely, that, simply by virtue of adopting the left-liberal agenda, one is good, and so his “mistakes” are but minor slip-ups, hiccups in a life of sublime goodliness. Whereas any kind of minor slip-up by those on the “right” (classical liberals included, these days) are to be seen as brief inadvertent flashes revealing their grubby souls — even when those flashes are either admittedly unintended, or else have to be run through a special code book to prove visible to the watchdogs of all that is good and righteous."
  • whiterosebuddy · 1 year ago
I can see why folks are offended by Biden's racially insensitive remarks. But ask yourselves when Farrakhan and Jessie made racially insensitive remarks did you forever hold that against them, or did you IDENTIFY with them?

Most folks of their same cultural ethnicity IDENTIFIED with them...and it is the same for Biden...Farrakhan and Jessie are not full of hate..but they speak from the racially biased perspective fo the society they have experienced. White folks may still be talking about 'hymietown' or 'jews are devils' but black people are not and most black folks disregarded the remarks as GAFFES.

Well, I submit you need to have the same view about Bidens' racially insensitive remarks, white people underSTAND Biden and many of them do not HATE blacks they just are products of the racially biased society we live in and they give Biden a pass on those gaffes just like we would give Farrakhan, Wright and Jesse.

Biden speaks the lingo Obama needs to win..working class stiffs get Biden, and they appreciate and value his views because they feel he knows where they are coming from. Just as many blacks feel that Sharpton, Wright and Jesse speak to their lifestyles and issues even if the larger society finds it offensive.

Think about it, Obama said that his own grandmother who loves him dearly was afraid of black men! That hurt him badly, but he understood and said in his speech in Philly she is a 'typical white person' and that meant she has all the fears and concerns about race that folks in her generation were raised with. Biden can speak to that, he resonates with people of that ilk.

Obama is lucky to have someone on the ticket who looks like his grandmother speaking to hearts like hers...Obama understands her heart too..but he doesn't look like those folks and many of them can't hear what is in his heart because they can't get beyond the color of his skin, no matter that his mother is white.

Biden reaches those people, and just like Barack's grandparents vouched for him many a time...Biden is going to be the friendly 'white' face that introduces Obama to those wary folks and who vouches for him ..because he has a working class background those people are going to give Obama a chance and come to the ballot box and vote for change because Biden is going to tell them it is in their economic interest.
    He speaks kitchen table politics.

When a stranger comes to our door alone, we seldom open the door or listen, but if that same stranger approaches with a face we know, we are far more likely to listen and even invite them in.
    C'mon PEOPLE!!

This is a winning ticket. Let's get behind these two and WIN!!!

If it helps him win those white americans who think the same thing, how is that a negative? I think Biden is more of a straight shooter and more honest than McCain. Biden will score well with those older white americans, especially white women, who are nervous about voting for Obama.

Well wait! I know a lot of white women who are voting Obama! America needs to wake up, and taking the safe way out of the woods is not always the best.
