Jack and Jill Politics: Democratic National Convention - Monday Night Open Thread

  • nickwah22 · 1 year ago
    RE: Ted Kennedy

CNN says he will be there but they aren't sure if he will speak. A speech is written but he might not be strong enough to make it.

    We'll see.
  • TruthSeeker · 1 year ago
I heard he said he thinks this will be his last convention.
  • GreenLadyHere · 1 year ago
Just his presence is AWE INSPIRING!!!!! :>) :>)

God Bless him and his family!!! :>) :>) What a trooper! :>) :>)

Why did Daddy Yankee come out in support of McCain ? What a frakking sell-out !!!
  • Miranda · 1 year ago
I thought I was hip, but I dont have a clue who Daddy Yankee is....however, I have been privy to the lyrics of some song that is quite...errr.......well, no words can describe it.
  • GreenLadyHere · 1 year ago
Miranda: I don't even pretend ta know him! :>) Over to Google!! :>) :>)
  • Marvy · 1 year ago
He's a reaggatone artist who had that song Gasolina that was inescapable a couple of years ago. And no, I don't know what he was talking about either. lol
  • GreenLadyHere · 1 year ago
    Marvy: Could ya sing a few bars?? :>) :>) :>) JK!! :>) :>)
  • Marvy · 1 year ago
I wouldn't do that to you lovely folks - I like it here. 8)
  • GreenLadyHere · 1 year ago
    Marvy: O.K. I watched the clip[below] from nickwah22! :>) :>)
  • Miranda · 1 year ago
Hold up.....I just watched that video...and just who the hell is McCain's campaign manager? Who? Is it that they know the mainstream media doesn't care who endorses McCain? I swear, Jenna Jameson could endorse McCain and he'd fly to do a press conference with her and no one would say a word.

McCain even mentioned the song "Gasoline"....but his old azz said "Gasolina"....LOLOL.....
  • nickwah22 · 1 year ago
According to him its because McCain has done a lot to support immigration. I wonder what he thinks of McCain's Cuba stance. I think its ironic that old ass McCain wants old ass Castro to drop dead lol.

    vid of Daddy Yankee..

    nickwah22: What a REVEALING video!!!!
    1. People were whispering in his ear regarding staging, like LIEberman whispered in "McAncient's" ear regarding THE CORRECT ANSWERS!! :>) :>

    2. "McAncient" was getting a vicarious, erotic rush from watching that semi-elderly "rock star" hugging and kissing those YOUNG, NUBILE, did I say YOUNG, teenage students!! :>) :>) :>)

    3. He stated ONE POLICY TOPIC - IMMIGRATION!! But He also stated that he likes all of "McAncient's" policies. Could ONLY articulate ONE!!!! :>) :>)

    4. Said that he was a man of few words: YEP!!!! :>) :>)

    Way funny!!!! :>) :>)

    Thanks, nickwah22!! :>) :>) :>)

THANK YOU LUKE RUSSERT. For the first time.....I mean for the freaking FIRST time, on TV, someone actually made the point that people under 30 generally DO NOT HAVE LAND LINES!!!!!!!!!! THEY ARE NOT POLLED!!
  • GreenLadyHere · 1 year ago
Miranda: Just said this to my daughter - as I spoke to her in her house ON HER CELL PHONE!!! :>) :>)

She said that she might try to find some pollster, call him/her on her CELL PHONE, so she can participate in the POLLS!!!! :>) :>) :>) :>)

    Whew! 5 bars up Deep Breaths!!!! :>) :>) :>)

FYI . . . if you get tired of the pundits, just flip the channel over to C-SPAN.

Good ole' reliable C-SPAN . . . No talking heads, just a camera filming the event. You get more music and funny shots of people dancing/having a good time. You also get a lot less Clinton drama and dumb a*s questions from the cable media.
  • nickwah22 · 1 year ago
TVOne says they will be focusing on the CBC over the next few days.

Thanks, Believe it or not CNN.com has live streaming of several viewpoints. The band is fantastic and that black woman in the band can belt out a song like you wouldn't believe!
  • nickwah22 · 1 year ago
I don't understand how this woman from the CBC is talking about how she is on Hillary's team until she releases her delegates. When she dropped out of the race in JUNE wasn't that enough? Hell, when Hillary and Bill had all of that -ish to say about how 'our' vote didn't count, wasn't THAT enough?
    Is it just me!?
  • GreenLadyHere · 1 year ago
nickwah22: With humility, I'll refer you to a post that I made yesterday [Sun.] on THIS very subject!! Check it out!! :>) :>)
  • Honey01 · 1 year ago
Jimmy Carter is coming on. Just wanted to say right quick I am feeling a little dejected.

The Clintons are getting exactly what they wanted. It feels like the Clinton Convention. Immediately following Pelosi's speech, Ann Curry asked her a series of no less that five questions all centered on Hillary. NONE on the actual candidate. Pan to the next idiot reporter interviewing Schumer, first two questions on Clinton. Still none on the actual candidate. .

Hopefully, ,after I see T. Kennedy and Michelle my mood lift.
  • GreenLadyHere · 1 year ago
    Honey01: Heads up, Honey01!!! We're here for ya!!! :>) :>)

Try C-SPAN for a diversion. Also, watch Baratunde!! :>) :>)

    Hang in there!! :>) :>)
  • Honey01 · 1 year ago
Thanks (hugs). I am watching Claire McCaskill on C-Span now. I flip back to MSNBC just to make sure I don't miss another Rachel moment.

She just laid it down again on Pat "racist" Buchannan". The crowd was eatin' it up. At one point Buchannan used the words "poor gal" when talking about Michelle's bio., I thought Eugene Robinson was going to check him. But no luck.
  • GreenLadyHere · 1 year ago
My pleasure!! I was just saying to my sister, Eugene talks a different story in his editorials! He's, sometimes an "attack dog!" On TV, less so!!
    Hmmmm! Disappointing!!!! :>) :>) :>)
  • taritac · 1 year ago
Try PBS. They are not too bad.

They are interviewing President Carter. My heart is going out to him. His mind is all there, but you can see age is catching up with him.
  • taritac · 1 year ago
I love Jimmy Carter. His heart is so big. He's talking about the history of racism and some touchpoints of racism over the years. He said he sat down in front of the TV and cried when Obama gave his speech on race and that he believes his election could represent an end to racism. Jimmy is way more optimistic than me, but optimism is what's needed to end it.
  • GreenLadyHere · 1 year ago

Maya [last name I don't know], Barack's half-sister is on now. She's beautiful and has a great speaking voice, but she was reading the teleprompter so diligently. It would have been nice if she'd told a cute little story about them or something. Could have been better.
  • GreenLadyHere · 1 year ago
Watching JJ, JR right now on C-SPAN!!! [5:46 p.m. CA]
  • taritac · 1 year ago
He definitely made up for Nancy and Maya. He made it clear why we're here.
  • taritac · 1 year ago
Jesse Jackson, Jr. is following in his dad's footsteps. Giving a great speech.

I am watching this on PBS. So far, not too much about Clinton, although that ASS David Brooks was unnecessarily critical of Nancy Pelosi's speech, saying she just gave a Democrats vs. Republicans speech, not a great, this-is-why-you-should-vote-for-Obama speech. Dumbass, this is the DEMOCRATIC Convention-- not just Obama's political life is on the line in November!!
  • GreenLadyHere · 1 year ago

  • msmartin · 1 year ago
Miranda, she is truly awesome. I excpected her to be on her best behavior tonight since they're playing to a national audience, but she is still not letting Pat Buchanan's bullshit slide. "Post rational", I love it.
  • Miranda · 1 year ago
She needs to copyright the word "post-rational"....thats the nicest most politically correct way to describe crazy azz women who are chemically and hormonally imbalanced to the point of insanity.
  • GreenLadyHere · 1 year ago

  • Miranda · 1 year ago

Hell, I wouldn't go up to Grady's Psyche Ward and ask the criminally insane for their thoughts on educational reform, why the hell talk to these nitwits who keep screaming "we dont know obama, he's a christian socialist muslim jihadist terrorist who's name played backwards on a old record player sounds like Lucifer!1"

Why does Obama want everyone to continue to talk about this?

"Yes, we’re friendly, but it’s ancient history and I denounced what he did, so what’s the big deal about socializing with, um, an unrepentant terrorist?"

Set aside the fact that Obama was a boy when Ayers was setting bombs; today Ayers is an unreconstructed hard-left radical with dramatic views on education and society - as he explained to Hugo Chavez during a speech in Venezuela in 2006, "La educacion es revolucion!"

Obama worked for five years with Bill Ayers on education reform while they were both with the Chicago Annenberg Challenge. Are we being asked to believe that, just as Obama initially claimed to have been unaware of Jeremiah Wright's views, he was also unaware of Ayers current radicalism?
  • taritac · 1 year ago
So, Obama is supposed to not even know people who have different ideas than he does?

Go look up the racist, separatist writings of John Mccain's pal, Richard Quinn, who McCain has paid over $180,000 to his consulting firm. After that, maybe we can have a REAL discussion about associations. Do some rearch for once.

Only Dems speaking will be those few PUMAs. Of course, they seem to have all given money to Republican candidates in the past.

    Uhm hmm!
  • Admiral_Komack · 1 year ago
    I liked Jim Leach.
I applaud the man's courage in just standing there.
I know it wasn't easy, but he did what he thought was right.
From what I can remember about him, he wasn't a Tom Delay type Republican (LOUD).

What I found out about Jim Leach (Congresspedia) :

"Legislation Leach authored spanned the gamut from creation of an international AID’s Trust Fund to debt relief for the world’s poorest countries; from authorization of an IMF quota increase to making the Peace Corps an independent federal agency; from requiring the federal government to use soy ink to prohibiting internet gambling; from restraining federal employee growth to redressing certain Holocaust asset losses.

"The legislation he is perhaps best known for is Gramm-Leach-Bliley which is considered one of the seminal pieces of banking legislation of the 20th century, second in import only to the Federal Reserve Act of 1913.

"After attending Princeton, the School of Advanced International Studies of Johns Hopkins, and the London School of Economics, Leach entered the United States Foreign Service and served as a delegate to the Geneva Disarmament Conference and the U.N. General Assembly. In 1973, Leach resigned his commission in protest of the Saturday Night Massacre when Richard Nixon fired his Attorney General, Eliot Richardson, and the independent counsel investigating the Watergate break-in, Archibald Cox.

"After returning to Iowa to head a family business, Leach was elected in 1976 to Congress where he came to be a leader of a small band of moderate Republicans. He chaired two national organizations dedicated to moderate Republican causes – the Ripon Society and the Republican Mainstream Committee. He also served as president of the largest international association of legislators – Parliamentarians for Global Action.

"Leach serves on the board of several public companies and three non-profit organizations – the Century Foundation, the Kettering Foundation, and the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and formerly served as a trustee of Princeton University.

"Leach holds eight honorary degrees and has received decorations from two foreign governments. He is the recipient of the Wayne Morse Integrity in Politics Award, the Woodrow Wilson Award from Johns Hopkins, the Adlai Stevenson Award from the United Nations Association, and the Edger Wayburn Award from the Sierra Club. A three-sport athlete in college, Leach was elected to the Wrestling Hall of Fame in Stillwater, Oklahoma, and the International Wrestling Hall of Fame in Waterloo, Iowa.

I know you are having some kind of problem with posting but I am digging the tripplw posts here and elsewhere, they seem to drive home your message even more.

    :-)
  • msmartin · 1 year ago
Thanks. I've been having a terrible time. Not only am I triple posting, I have to wait for ever for the page to load each time I make a comment.

It's tedious, but I love the JJP fam and conversations so much, I keep fighting.

Their girls are beautiful. But I think they are going to have to clamp down on that oldest one. She is probably going to get real full of herself in the next few months.

HOW CUTE was the little one! "Hi, Daddy!"

I'm crying too. Who am I kidding?

    PASS THE TISSUES!!! :>) :>)
  • Honey01 · 1 year ago
Man, she was good. As I was listening to her, I could not help but think about my own Dad who died from cancer. I hope her speech does what is intended, and allows people to see themselves in the Obama's.

Sasha was too cute! "Hi Daddy".

AND I DON'T CARE WHAT ANY NEGATIVE PUNDIT SAYS!!!! :>) :>)

SHE WAS GREAT!!! {Taritac} THE END!!! :>) :>)
  • taritac · 1 year ago
She was good. She did exactly what she needed to do.

I was so mad at that ass wipe David Brooks-- "I wanted to hear more about what Obama is like on a day-to-day basis."

    GTHOH

What was supposed to say? "Well, first, Barack slaps the snooze button a couple times, then he wakes up and tries to give me a little something. Then he gets up and goes to the bathroom. After he finishes wiping his ass . . ."

Then the other PBS pundits chimed in saying that Michelle and the girls really gave us the sense that they are a real family like everyone else, that they really love each other.

    Give me a break.

Sometimes white people seem to really think we are aliens.
  • The Caped Composer · 1 year ago
David Brooks is not a shining specimen of "white people in general"-- he is barely a shining specimen of the human race to begin with! I have no idea how a complete idiot like him ever got into a position of being a public commentator. He is a tool's tool's tool!

Well, I think the McCain's are aliens. I dare you to tell me that Cindy doesn't look like that alien in "Mars Attacks" that was disguised as a woman. I couldn't figure out why everytime I saw them, I kept thinking of that same movie when the aliens blew up Congress...now I know why.

    Art imitating life.

I thought about you as he was speaking. He really couldn't say anything bad about that speech she was awesome and her hair was laid too. The girls were cute and they really love their father. I loved them tugging to get the mike to talk to Daddy.

Michelle Bernard is speaking the truth again. Kennedy passed the torch on to Barack Obama.
  • msmartin · 1 year ago
Michelle Bernard has an overwhelming amount of respect for Michelle Obama. It's about time someone stood up for Michelle Obama.

Unfortunately the TV got flipped to FOX, where the host Megyn Kelly complained about Michelle's dress blending in the background and then this other guy told all about how the Puma people were largely uninterested in Michelle's speech.

There goes Michelle Bernard again! I'm telling you, Obama needs to give her a job. She continues to talk better of him than 85% of the so-called Democrats.
  • Honey01 · 1 year ago
    Michelle Bernard is fiyah!
  • BlackButterfly · 1 year ago
Okay...I've dryed my tears and gained my composure. Michelle Obama was fabulous!

Growing up as a black kid, if you're lucky you have people around you to teach you about the people that look just like you who've made great impressions and great contributions in the world to make it a better place--because that information wasn't available in the history taught in schools!

But to be alive during an epic moment in history such as this one has overwhelmed me more than I thought possible. Deeply honored to be experiencing this moment in time.

I am on such a high tonight.....Michelle did that...she laid it down...she was a QUEEN.....and I just don't think Malia and Sasha can be more precious. Lord I just pray for this family and feel so incredibly hopeful right now.

Dr. Rachel and Chris Matthews BOTH shut down Pat Buchanan!!!

    STEEEEEEE-RIKE!!!! 10 pins down!!!!! :>) :>) :>)
  • Honey01 · 1 year ago
I NEED TO GO TO BED! I just can't. I don't wanna miss any of Rachel's smackdowns.

Rachel just called Buchannan out on the Rethug's intolerance of gays, and just people who are not like them in general! She mentioned the cultural wars of 1992. She was hot.

Then Chris told him there was no Christian Democratic party, or litmus test in response to Buchannan saying the Michelle did not discuss "Chrisitianity".

Best believe the MSNBC execs will be having a talk with them to calm them all down.

I think the convention was great.
I liked Caroline Kennedy, Ted Kennedy, Jim Leach, Craig Robinson, Michelle Obama, Malia and Sasha Obama, and, of course Barack Obama.

I think tonight's part of the convention was meant to humanize Barack Obama.
    I think they succeeded.
  • GreenLadyHere · 1 year ago
    Admiral: YEP! :>) :>)
  • s · 1 year ago
Of course he's human. He's likable. He has a beautiful, accomplished loving wife and family.

Conventional wisdom seems to be that the Obama's need to convince us that that they are 'normal Americans.' I don't think that's necessary.

Americans need to be made to feel confident that he has the experience and judgment to lead. Is he ready? That's it. Period.

Bashing McCain. Choosing Biden. Michelle as a keynote speaker. None of these strategies imbue Obama with experience and judgment and will do nothing to allay those concerns.

I really don't know what will...other than time.
  • Town · 1 year ago
Over on Kos, they're saying that Caroline Kennedy laid the smackdown on Wolf Blitzer earlier tonight. When he asked her why they didn't vet Hillary, she allegedly said "Oh, you know a lot about the process, don't you?"

When he said "Well why don't you walk us through it?" she replied, "I'm not walking you through anything. That's a confidential process."

    LOL
