And I have to look up the my sources again, but I read that Bush's tax cuts, which John McCain wants to continue, cost the U.S. at least $200 billion a year in revenue.
Another thing----a study released earlier this year noted that a 2/3 of U.S. comapnies DO NOT PAY TAXES.
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Nearly two-thirds of U.S. companies and 68% of foreign corporations do not pay federal income taxes, according to a congressional report released Tuesday.
The Government Accountability Office (GAO) examined samples of corporate tax returns filed between 1998 and 2005. In that time period, an annual average of 1.3 million U.S. companies and 39,000 foreign companies doing business in the United States paid no income taxes - despite having a combined $2.5 trillion in revenue.
The study showed that 28% of foreign companies and 25% of U.S. corporations with more than $250 million in assets or $50 million in sales paid no federal income taxes in 2005. Those companies totaled a combined $372 billion in sales for the largest foreign companies and $1.1 trillion in revenue for the biggest U.S. companies.
The GAO report, which did not name any specific companies, said that some corporations reported zero income before deducting expenses while others said they had zero net income after deducting expenses. Either way, those companies reported no tax liability, the GAO said.
But many of the companies the report found had paid no tax were likely small businesses that pay other taxes. Generally, many small firms, because they do not have shareholders, are able to shift corporate income to individual income.
I am no expert on ecomomics, but if theis country wants to continue to wage 2 costly wars and other out-of-control spending, citizens will have to step up. And most average Americans can't---they either can't find jobs or they don't have the money. BTW, if Bush's tax cuts meant to stimulate the economy, why is the unemployment rate, at 6.1% the highest in 5 years? And the disparity between the richest and poorest Americans has widened tremendously.

The Arizona Republican, who is the early front-runner for his party's presidential nomination in 2008, surprised tax-cut proponents last week when he voted to continue Mr. Bush's tax cuts on capital gains and dividends and other tax breaks in a $70 billion Tax Relief Extension Reconciliation Act.

Usually I disagree with 92% of what this man says, cough it up to our political differences. But what is interesting about the article is:
1.) It is written in a tone of \"Obama is probably going to the president, here's what I think that will look like\". This is big, simply because it is a Republican commentator who sees the writing on the wall. This race is over according to most Republicans. And although they won't publicly admit it, the only hope they're holding on to is that racism will stop people from for voting for Obama. That's all they have left. And as we've seen recently, racism is a luxury for people at this point. But this race is so close; I truly wouldn't suggest getting comfortable. We ain't Lightening Bolt, no need to slow down at the finish line!
2.) Even when the talking points of \"he's an elitist\" have been shown to be ineffective, they will still use it. I love how they've moved on, and now they're trying to play up the calmness of Obama.
Here's one way Brooks puts it \"Obama has developed strategies for equanimity, and now he\u2019s become a homeostasis machine\". That's a fancy way to say \"Obama is dull\".
There are several things that irk me about this. First, did you really expect an \"angry Black man\" to get this far? Do you really think Obama doesn't know any extreme of emotion will hurt his chances? Do you think this is new?! Don't you know Black folk have been, to borrow a phrase from my Asian brothers and sisters, \"swallowing the bitterness\" from day one? How do you think the Black middle class has grown not because racism is over, but in spite of racism over the last few years? Get outta here with that mess!!!!
I am sick and tired of hearing people say Obama needs to get angry. Shut up. I know what I'm about to say will offend come folks, but I gotta say it: It is clear that the people who are saying this are white liberals, or new money. Plain and simple. For instance, Obama is obviously a strong proponent of Universal Healthcare in America. In fact, I think he is into this not simply because it's part of his campaign foundation, and he politically believes in it, but because of his own mother, he may be invested in this on a personal level. However, this is going to take a lot of money. We are in the midst of a financial crisis. There will be a push to scale back on governmental support of Universal Healthcare. Will he stand strong and make the courageous choice not to back off from it?
This is a worry for me, only because I have been following the man since way back when we were both in Chicago. He used to be very pro-Palestine, now that it's politically inconvenient...not so much anymore. I am hoping that he is just playing the game and has not officially sold out on various topics because of a personal lack of passion. In the arms race by private-equity firms to line up ever-higher profile \u201cadvisers,\u201d Lehman Brothers may have just taken the lead.
According to a small handful of reports Friday, including this one in Investment Dealers\u2019 Digest and another in Private Equity Hub, the investment bank has hired former Florida Governor and presidential son and brother Jeb Bush for its in-house investing arm.
No sign of an announcement from Lehman on the hire.
Private-equity firms hire politicos and former corporate honchos all the time to help them open doors to deals, as well as to manage government relations and the companies in their portfolios. Carlye Group chief David Rubenstein, in fact, discussed the increasing value of such moves in this Q&A published in The Wall Street Journal today.
No family these days has better door-opening skills in Washington or corporate America than the Bushes. The family of the 41st and 43rd presidents is no stranger to Wall Street either. Jeb\u2019s father, George H.W., used to serve as an adviser to Carlyle, and his grandfather was a partner at Wall Street firm Brown Brothers Harriman.

Lehman Brothers( has nabbed George H. Walker, the CEO of Goldman Sachs to be the global head of its $188 billion Investment Management Division, Lehman Brothers announced today.
Walker has already resigned from Goldman Sachs and could not be reached for comment. A spokesman at Goldman Sachs did not return a call. .
Walker, who is President George W. Bush's second cousin, had joined the merger and acquisition group of Goldman Sachs in 1991 and became a partner in 1998. He soon grew to be one of the principal architects of Goldman Sachs' investment management strategy and was overseeing a $70 billion group of alternative investments, including hedge funds of funds and private equity investments.

McCain has never said that, nor anything like that. When asked at the time to produce one instance of McCain deploying race, the Obama campaign could not. Yet here was Obama firing a preemptive charge of racism against a man who had not indulged in it. An extraordinary rhetorical feat, and a dishonorable one.
