Jack and Jill Politics: DNC 08: What Would You Ask Michelle Obama Or Jesse Jackson Jr.

  • SB · 1 year ago
Hi ladies...just want to comment on the black/white thing. My husband and I are as white as we can get and we LOVE Obama. We pray for him everyday and want him to be out President. We did not vote once for Bush and feel that our country has let us down in so many ways. We love Michelle and I know plenty who do not but I am a real person and know that she is real too. I would love to be a part of electing America's first black president into the White House. It would be an honor for me and my husband. I know America has turned everything into race but just know that there ARE those of us out there wanting the best for this great country and it is with Barrack and Michelle. God Bless and have fun at the convention. I will be watching from my couch and wishing I was there with you. I will also be blogging on Colorado Springs Gazette as Moonshine and telling the republicans what I think of them. Whoo Hooo!!!!!

Just saw Michelle. Wow! She was amazing. Can you believe we could actually have her as our first lady? We'd be such a lucky country.

Sorry for the highjack... But I saw someone badmouth Jesse Jackson Sr. in another thread. I got one prove you're not a hack question:

Has JJ Sr. or JJ Sr. not been actively campaign, behind-the-scenes or otherwise, for Sen. Obama?

If the answer is, "Yes" or "I don't know" then I suggest that whoever it was and everybody who spouts ig'nant rhetoric like ig'nant Republicans check that nonsense. This "Obama, right or wrong" bs has to stop... and I don't even like Jesse...

For Jackson Jr. - When are you running for president?

(I've always liked Jr. as a politician, btw. He already hit a home run with his speech.)

    Nquest: Co-signing on JJ,jr speech!!! :>) :>)

I love seeing the youth of America getting involved and speaking out for Obama. Michelle: Do you think that Barrack can rally the youth of America and get them to come out in large numbers to help us middle aged dems get the White House back?
  • rikyrah · 1 year ago
Jesse Jr. - Are you trying for that Senate seat?

Mrs. Obama - just know you're in my prayers. Folks have your back.
  • Nquest · 1 year ago
    Why shouldn't he?

You got something against him trying for a Senate seat?
  • rikyrah · 1 year ago
    Nquest,

I have no problem with Jr. being in the Senate. I always thought that part of the early endorsement of Obama was possibly angling for the Senate Seat. I have no problem with Jr. In fact, I believe he and his wife and kids paint a terrific picture. I think, nobody would run harder from the moment that they got the Senate Seat to keep it than Jr. I think, if he had enough time, he could go and get the support of those parts of the state that would be hostile to him ordinarily. I especially think his wife would charm some of those folks. So, while I believe he would be a good choice, would serve the people of Illinois well, would work his ass to the bone in every corner of the state, I just don't know if the gap time between him getting the Senate seat and when he'd have to run again would be long enough for him to convince certain parts of the state. I have no doubt that he'd be a true progressive for the State, no-holds-barred.

    I'm a Jr. fan.

She knocked it out of the park. The dad having MS, their working class roots, the saving money to send her and her bro to college to the kids fawning over their daddy and stealing the mic away from their mom to say hi to him.... LOVED IT.

    Jesse Jackson Jr question:

There are many who have spoken about the divide between the Civil Rights and the Post Civil Rights generation and the desire for the former to stop being gatekeepers to articulating the "black voice-" what does he think about the divide between the generations and the notion of the Civil Rights leaders as gatekeepers.?
  • Nquest · 1 year ago
I'll take that question: Rumors of the divide are greatly overexaggerated.

In the "Obama = Jackie Robinson?" panel JJ Jr. connected the thread between Sr. pushing for the "delegate rules that made Obama win" to Obama's win. One of the other panelist noted how neither Obama or the old guard are the "gatekeepers" of the "black voice" because Black people don't recognize any one person or, more to the point, any one generation as its leaders.

For the people in this generation pushing this DIVIDE & CONQUER propaganda, those being hoodwinked by this propaganda... those stuck on stupid buy into or otherwise emotionally invested ini this propaganda... I have but one simple question: what is this stuff really about?

No bs. Straight honest talk about what this is really all about. Obama himself pushed this bs trying to act like Rev. Wright represented some old and outmolded type of thinking that absolutely makes no sense because the views of Jesse, the views of Jeremiah and, yes, the views of Barack have no generational bounds.

And when I say propaganda... when you say "articulating the Black voice" what are you talking about? Articulating the "Black voice" where? To whom? About what?

There is No End To Black Politics. No End to Civil Rights politics until and unless those issues are addressed forthrightly and fully. We are no "minority." Ain't a damn thing, not a single issue or concern that we have, any segment of Black folks have that's "minor."

So what do you mean "articulating THE black voice"? What the hell is the new generation of Black leaders about? What the hell is the new agenda?

This divide propaganda, even this generational divide propaganda, used to be something I debated with card carrying, worthless Black political conservatives (not to be confused with conservative brothers and sisters who are principled conservatives). And whenever they were asked what their agenda was and what essentially made their platform or issue-based focus different and what their actual vision and plan was for Black America they were virtually silent.

So, to the extent that there are any such gatekeepers... what are they keeping people from getting? What slate (I said slate) of issues that this "new" generation wants to see address that (1) aren't being addressed and (2) how is the old guard stopping the "new" generation from addressing them?

Nobody stands in your way when you don't even know where you're going... So I really would like to hear it. I really would love a detailed explanation for repeating this meme that is challenged by reality and so lacking in substance. But maybe I'm an old soul in my pre-40's. Maybe that's why I don't see it.

Then, again, I know after all the time I've heard this PROPAGANDA, I've yet to hear anything approaching clarity when it comes to all this. I have no idea what people are talking about. What I do hear is a lot of understandable frustration. But, IMO, the stuff is as misplaced as PUMA's angst with Obama.

    Disclaimer:
Nothing aimed at you personally Evita. Just a growing pet-peeve of mine...
  • evita · 1 year ago
I felt that peeve in the text...

This is a conversation I have had for years. When something happens and is covered by the media they go to a select few where there are many others that have a better sense of what communities of color think. I do believe that Jesse Jackson Sr has been a gatekeeper. He has been tolerated by post civil rights people who believe that his vision is out of touch and not to mention hypocritical. He keeps that gate closed by not declining the interview or by declaring his relationship with MLK makes him the expert on all things having to do with prejudice and discrimination. I feel the same way about Rev Al, Charlie Rangel, etc Do you remember the interview with Baratunde and Jesse Jackson on CNN? Gatekeeper ish for real.

I'm hoping AFTER this election they will seek out newer voices that have a better sense of what is happening in communities of color. To regain my respect Jesse and et al will need to TAKE RESPONSIBILITY for what has transpired on their watch.

    Hey Baratunde, (African drums)...

can you ask delegates - especially AA's - what this means to them? What it means for them to be present and to cast their votes for Barack. How hard they had to fight to get to the national convention, to be present for this historic moment.

I see them there and I know their hearts must be overflowing with it all. But nobody's asking them how they feel.

I think this is an untold story. The pundits are sucking the freakin' life out of me

Also, you've GOT to get some footage of the Maine delegation and a little chat with Craig Hickman!

A question for Michelle (and Barack of course) : OK identity will keep coming up during this campaign so let's get real with a really important one to HALF the country: can Barack who is 6'1" and Michelle who is 5'11" relate to SHORT PEOPLE even though they are not one of us?

I need to get in contact with whomever handles Michelle Obama's email or personal mail. This is a personal matter for me.
