Yes, FISA could be used to monitor the communications of ordinary citizens. Because the FISA court's proceedings are held in secret, we will never know if that's how it was used or not.

You folks trying to have this debate with D are delightfully optimistic. D, like most people in this country do not understand the reason why the constitution was created nor the concept of checks and balances. I do not really blame D or people like him. I blame the educational system. I blame a society that seems to take so much for granted. I blame the corruption of our political leaders who have sold us out for pennies on the dollars. Remember, the Roman empire fell because of corruption within, not because of the "barbarians" without.

I guess part of the reason I am not as engaged in this is I have always believed the gov't was spying on people because of COINTELPRO and the McCarthy witch hunts and having a father who was a Black Panther and some relatives that work for the Federal Gov't. There have always been inroads for gov't officials to get around things when they want to do something. The difference now is that it's more obvious. I still see it as a natural progression in response to what has been happening in this country the past 30 years. Historically every world power implodes on itself and the time for the USA is coming.

Obviously, your life is of no signifigance to the government, but imagine if it were; perhaps you desired to effect some positive change or right some monumental wrong - let's say - like ending Jim Crow or maybe force adherence to human rights and someone who had a lot to lose (usually monetarily, but sometimes for ideological reason like sustaining a superior race) and could use the powers that you would grant them all because you believe if you're living right then everyone else must too and wouldn't abuse those powers in any way to hurt any innocent person, would you be okay with that?

Denise, Hoover did enough damage with COINTELPRO and not to mention he had blackmail files on just about every member of both Houses of Congress as well as the Executive and Judiciary branches.

The Mob, OTOH, had him dead to rights as an in-the-closet homosexual who blackmailed other closeted homosexuals to gain all the power he had. Any other FBI director wouldn't have been working for a powerless Attorney General because the AG would have had his own file on Hoover and kept his closeted behind in check.

Someone clarify: are we really trying to compare someone's attempt to quell dissent (COINTELPRO) with the government's attempt to gather intelligence on those who wish our country's destruction?

Yes, America should allow groups like the "Black Panther Party and Republic of New Africa", the "Ku Klux Klan and National States' Rights Party", the SDS, the Weathermen, etc. to roam and plan freely.

Hey, why not include more rights for Iran, North Korea, Al-Qaeda, Hezbollah, Hamas, Egyptian Islamic Jihad, etc. while we are at it.

I would have liked to see more about the Hoover story (his power and involvement with presidents), the FBI and the fact that remenants of that time remain in Washington for those who know nothing about it.
