Congressman John Conyers wrote a diary on DailyKos regarding a letter he wrote to John McCain and his campaign. : Note to McCain: You Don't Have to Own a House (or Eight) to Vote

He also notes that there will be a press conference Wednesday, bringing in DOJ's Voting Section to testify about this issue. It may be on C-SPAN and he expects good converage.

    The Letter:

    September 18, 2008

    The Honorable John McCain
    P.O. Box 16118
    Arlington, VA 22215

    Dear Senator McCain:

As Chairman of the U.S. House of Representatives Judiciary Committee (HJC), I am extremely concerned by recent media reports that the Chairman of the Republican Party in Macomb County, James Carabelli, is planning to use a list of foreclosed homes as a basis to challenge voters and block them from participating in the November 2008 election. I am writing to request that you denounce any efforts by the Republican Party, most notably in Michigan and Ohio, to engage in voter suppression, including challenges based on a voter’s home foreclosure status, and that you direct your supporters to refrain from engaging in such behavior. At a time when Americans are losing their homes at record numbers, it is difficult to imagine that anyone would attempt to capitalize on such misfortune for political gain. Furthermore, a rejection of this strategy would be consistent with your recent commitment to "a fair and transparent election."

The subprime mortgage crisis has affected a significant number of Americans, and as such, a significant number of voters could be disenfranchised with this Republican strategy to challenge voters based on home foreclosure status. More than 700,000, or one in every 171, of our nation’s households received at least one foreclosure-related notice from April to June of this year. It is estimated that 2.5 million homes will face foreclosure this year, an increase from 1.5 million in 2007. A Center for Responsible Lending report estimates that the highest default rates are expected to be in cities in California, Nevada, Michigan, New Jersey and Washington, D.C.

A disproportionate number of those homeowners affected by the subprime mortgage crisis are minorities. The Center for Responsible Lending projects that 10 percent of African-American borrowers and 8 percent of Hispanic borrowers will be affected by foreclosure. In contrast, only 4 percent of white borrowers are expected to be affected.
The Macomb County party’s plan to challenge voters who have defaulted on their home loans would disproportionately affect African Americans who are overwhelmingly Democratic voters. The plan could be a violation of the Voting Rights Act.

With the 2006 reauthorization of the Voting Rights Act, Democrats and Republicans alike agreed that discriminatory voter suppression tactics had not been completely eradicated and protections against such tactics were still necessary. Members of Congress, like you, voted in support of reauthorizing this Act because they recognized that fair and equal access to the ballot box has not yet been achieved for all Americans. Certainly there must be no denying the kind of negative impact that challenges based on home foreclosure status can have on historically disenfranchised voting populations who have traditionally been targeted by predatory practices. A person’s ability to exercise his or her right to vote should not be contingent upon financial circumstances.

Notably, in 1981 a federal court condemned the Republican National Committee (RNC) for using vote caging tactics similar to the foreclosure list plan. Since the federal court’s decision in 1981 in New Jersey, the RNC has been under a federal consent decree to refrain from engaging in this practice. It is important to note that the Department, under President George H.W. Bush filed suit in 1990 to stop a vote caging effort by those associated with Senator Jesse Helms’s re-election campaign.

As Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, I ask that you repudiate any efforts by the Republican Party and any of its state affiliates to engage in voter suppression and intimidation tactics, and that you direct your supporters across the country to refrain from engaging in such behavior. I would appreciate hearing from you directly on whatever actions you take in response to this request.

Responses should be directed to the Judiciary Committee office, 2138 Rayburn House Office Building, Washington, DC 20515 (tel: 202-225-3951; fax: 202-225-7680). Thank you in advance for your cooperation in this important matter.

    Sincerely,

    John Conyers, Jr.
    Chairman

Barack gave a speech to women in Florida where he paid tribute to his mother and grandmother and talked about how hard women work and that they deserve equal pay for equal work. Somewhere in there, he threw in the line that these hard-working women don't need any deference.

    It was sublime.

I read a comment over at another blog, and I have to agree with it. For all the talk about how ' weak' Barack Obama was, and that he was going to be bullied into accepting Hillpatine, the truth is, he did what he wanted to do. He didn't choose Hillpatine. He will win or lose on his own terms, which is all that I wanted.

The WEAK candidate here, is McCain. He picked an unqualified right -wing nut, because the religious poobahs told him to. He wasn't man enough to go with HIS own choices of Lieberman or Ridge, because he was SCARED. He never had control over his own party. He's not had control over this campaign in ages. They just throw him out there.

Isn't it just ironic. McCain was/is running as the Maverick who fought his own party. Then the party took over handed him the mess that is Sarah Palin and told him to shut up. As I've said before, it's not about McCain, the Republican party never wanted him as their candidate and they're not really having him. If you've seen him lately, you can hear in his tone and detect from his demeanor that he knows its not about him. They stuck it to him in the end. I wonder how long it will be before the Maverick gets pissed and tells them to kiss his ass.

Yet, Barack did it his way and will win his way.

These are just some observations of mine:

McCain has created a monster with Palin and it might be too late to reign him in. Sarah and Todd Palin have future plans that do NOT include John McCain. Food tasters, indeed.

The Social Conservatives aren't running to win 2008; that's a lost cause. They are setting themselves up for 2012, with Sarah Palin as the new face of the brand new GOP and John McCain as the sacrificial old dude (like Bob Dole).

The Fiscal Conservative wing of the GOP doesn't seem like they're down for what's taking place and I would not be surprised to see a lot more Repubs. coming out against Sarah Palin.

For all the talk of "disunity" within the Democratic Party, the GOP needs to worry about the upcoming civil war in theirs.

If McCain can't even pick his own VP, we should not expect him to pick his own cabinet, either.

Cindy deep down knows what time it is, I will keep an eye on her wardrobe every day until Election Day.
  • JJai · 1 year ago
Cindy is left with only her "beauty". Meanwhile, Palin can shoot moose, raise a family, and still be beautiful and more youthful. Plus, Palin's husband actually loves her. How devastating.

And Town I hadn't previously considered how Palin steals Cindy's first lady shine. With Palin around being a young media darling and not some gruff guy Cindy's gentile society act gets canned.

These are new and interesting dynamics.

    On a random note…..
Okay, if Todd is with Palin as she gallivants around the country where is Trig and that Piper (she always looks pretty desperate for some attention) I know seeing them (Palin, McCain) campaign together alone is completely out due to their mixed doubles status. So, the Bridget and all the other kids are putting Country First while their parents seek to destroy us.
  • CraigHickman · 1 year ago
Fiscal conservatives are livid with Mooselini on the ticket. And they're not keeping quiet about it.

I told my husband she would divide the Republican party, but he didn't believe me.

    Now he does.

Todd is campaigning right alongside his wife, who's campaigning right alongside the Dangerous Fraud.

It's long been believed she's fronting for him in Alaska politics. That he's the shadow governor. But since she can get away with things in politics that he can't, she's the one out front.

The Palins are the right-wing version of the Clintons with the gender roles reversed simply because times have changed.

    Craig,

I will repeat this because I believe it to be true:

    IFFF

You take politics seriously - not power - but politics, and what goes into politics seriously in this country-

You can't help but be offended by her.

    There's no way around it.

And they can throw around all the 'elitist' crap they want about Obama

The honest conservatives are already insulted by this woman and admit it.

You honestly think she could last an hour in a meeting with the WSJ Editorial Board?

Or an hour with the columnists of the National Review?

    Or The Weekly Standard?

    You gotta be shitting me.

I don't agree with ANYTHING those mofos say.

But, I could argue with that with them.

Did you see the post at The Daily Dish about her blatherings about energy?

I never thought I'd meet anyone who made Dubya's 'command' of the English language look good, but here we've found it.

And, yes, as someone who considers herself a serious student and takes pride in challenging myself intellectually, I find this woman offensive to the nth degree.

Sarah Palin did more to bring those diehard female Hillary supporters over to supporting Obama than anything that happened at the convention in Denver. Those women fooled themselves into believing that Obama had somehow disrespected them...well when McCain ACTUALLY disrespected them it was a wake-up call of mad proportions..."oh...so wait, he just called us dumb bitches"...yep McCain surely darn did.

    Palin Dis-invited from [Anti-]Iran Rally

    Palin disinvited from Iran rally

The organizers of an anti-Iran rally Monday rescinded their invitation to Alaska Governor Sarah Palin after Democrats protested that her presence would turn the event into a political rally, McCain campaign and Jewish community sources said.

The Conference of Presidents of Major Jewish Organizations created a political tempest by inviting Palin to speak without clearing her invitation with another speaker, Senator Hillary Clinton. Clinton promptly dropped out of the event, saying it would be seen as unduly political. The McCain campaign then pressed Senator Barack Obama to join Palin on the stage in a show of unity against Iran.

The Obama campaign in turn offered to send Congressman Robert Wexler of Florida -- who had harshly attacked Palin for slender ties to Pat Buchanan-- to the event.

But the appearance that the non-partisan group was aligning with the Republican ticket put the group and its president, Malcolm Hoenlein, under heavy pressure from Jewish Democrats, including members of the conference, members of Congress, and the liberal group J Street, not to give Palin a platform, sources said. Hoenlein told the McCain campaign that he would have to rescind Palin's invitation or cancel the rally.

The organizers, I'm told, have formally disinvited all elected and political officials, but the move was about Palin.

"In order to keep the focus on Iranian threats and to ensure that this critical message not be obscured, the organizers of the rally have decided not to have any American political personalities appear," the Stop Iran Now coalition said in a statement. "This issue, opposition to a nuclear-armed Iran, is one which enjoys bipartisan support and the backing of the American people across the political spectrum. On this, all Americans stand together. We acknowledge and deeply appreciate those American political leaders who have been and remain prepared to stand with us as we collectively address the dangers of Iran's nuclear program and its support for terrorism globally."

    Full statement after the jump.

STATEMENT FROM THE ORGANIZERS OF THE RALLY TO STOP IRAN NOW

From The National Coalition to Stop Iran Now

(New York, Sept. 18, 2008) --- The purpose of “THE RALLY TO STOP IRAN NOW” on Monday, Sept. 22, 2008, is to protest the presence of Iran’s President Ahmadinejad at the United Nations, and to oppose his nuclear weapons program. We take most seriously his threat to wipe the United States and Israel “off the map” and believe the world leaders gathered at the United Nations must act with resolve to prevent a nuclear armed Iran that would be a threat to this country, Israel and the world.

For this reason, tens of thousands of people of every faith and ethnicity are expected to hear messages from prominent religious and civic leaders, including Nobel Laureate Elie Wiesel and Israeli Knesset Speaker Dalia Itzik. In order to keep the focus on Iranian threats and to ensure that this critical message not be obscured, the organizers of the rally have decided not to have any American political personalities appear.

This issue, opposition to a nuclear-armed Iran, is one which enjoys bipartisan support and the backing of the American people across the political spectrum. On this, all Americans stand together. We acknowledge and deeply appreciate those American political leaders who have been and remain prepared to stand with us as we collectively address the dangers of Iran's nuclear program and its support for terrorism globally.

We hope that the world leaders gathered at the UN will hear this message and resolve to act decisively against the Iranian nuclear program by implementing UN and Security Council resolutions and sanctions.

We again call on all concerned Americans of every background to join us at the "RALLY TO STOP IRAN NOW" on Monday, Sept. 22, at 11:45 A.M.

    Signed:
The National Coalition to Stop Iran Now
The Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations
    United Jewish Communities
    UJA-Federation of New York
The Jewish Council for Public Affairs
The Jewish Community Relations Council of New York

How many times do we have to hear:

We don't have ENOUGH MONEY to fix Social Security.
We don't have ENOUGH MONEY to fix Medicare.
We don't have ENOUGH MONEY to provide health care to ALL Americans.
We don't have ENOUGH MONEY to help out Americans losing their homes.
We don't have ENOUGH MONEY to help all our veterans returning from war.
We don't have ENOUGH MONEY to rescue "no child left behind".

    BUT...

We DO HAVE ENOUGH MONEY to bail out Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
We DO HAVE ENOUGH MONEY to bail out Bears Stearns.
We DO HAVE ENOUGH MONEY to bail out AIG.
We DO HAVE ENOUGH MONEY to pay for an unnecessary TRILLION DOLLAR war.

When the LITTLE GUY needs help, they scornfully say, "GET A JOB!"
But when one of their BIG GUY CRONIES need a bailout, what do they say? SURE, NO PROBLEM. Where's the checkbook?

The Republicans have shown their true colors and now they expect us to vote them back into office?

if you start w/ the idea we live in a country that practises capitalism you will be able to get a better handle on this. (Wall Street is one of the biggest donors to the Obama campaign). You're real complaint is that the political/economic system doesn't do enough for the average citizen.

The charge you want to level and I will level is unbridle capitalism is a disaster for the citizen. To control it the governement is to regulate business' to prevent disasters. A disasster is the extreme ends of the business cycle-unsustainable boom, the housing market and the bust' recession/depression. What has happened is that the environment is to deregulate business. And what has occured is the ultimate end of that which is recession/depression to prevent that we go to the other extreme which is governemnt intervention to protect the "TOTALITY" of the system.

Bear Stearns was not saved. The stock was sold to JP Morgan w/ huge losses to the shareholders and a GUARANTEE to cover losses in the toxic bond portfolio of Bear Stearns. That guarantee was necessary to prevent a liquidation of Bear Stearns. A liquidation would have forced all toxic bonds to have been marked down to reflect a market price and caused harm to the TOTALITY of the economy.

You have probably noticed that it "DID NOT WORK." It didn't work for two reasons. One, capitalism smelled an opportunity. It realized every financial institution had these toxic bonds and it did everything to force a mark to market of these bonds forcing the price of these institutions lower. Two, the regulators having operated as non regulating regulators had/have no idea what to do.

What you see is the result of that. the Federal government bought FNM and FRE. They lent AIG the money on a buy/loan agreement. I have no idea how this will work out.

I know that when Obama becomes President we will see even more regulation-in this regard the tide has totally turned. I do know that the regulation will also be chasing all the things we barely know about.-here I am refering to credit swaps which is what AIG is big in and I know next to nothing about. I do know that the business cycle will continue.

As to the bend over feeling I know that Obama will stop the outflow of treasury money to the Iraq situtation. I know he plans to become involved in Afghanistan. I believe he will be able to spend money on the civilian population. Let us hope that he will be able to get his program through congress. you probably know the joke that the most dangerous place in Washington is between Sen Schumer and a microphone. the truth is the most dangerous place is when congress is divify up how money will be spent. that is going to be Obama's biggest problem

rikyrah: Here's a new twist on the concept of GOP fund-raising - LIE & DECEIVE

    http://www.tampabay.com/news/politics/state/art...
Democrats, Florida Election Officials Criticize GOP Mailing

GOP Mailing attempts to confuse Seniors and to do "vote caging"

TALLAHASSEE — A new pitch for John McCain's presidential campaign aimed at older Democratic voters is causing complaints by Democrats and concern by elections officials.

The piece, paid for by the Republican National Committee and authorized by McCain, tells voters it is seeking to double-check their "unconfirmed" party affiliations while asking for money. A letter signed by McCain tells the Democrats: "We have you registered as a Republican."

"I was a little bit shocked and a little bit surprised," said recipient Bill Smith, 81, of Tampa, who calls himself a lifelong Democrat and has been registered at his current address since 2000. The retired plant engineer is one of about a dozen senior citizens that Democratic Party leaders identified as recipients, all of them longtime Democrats.

The RNC declined to discuss the mailer, which Democrats said has landed in five counties: Duval, Hillsborough, Collier, Miami-Dade and Escambia.

"This is simply a fundraising piece," said spokeswoman Amber Wilkerson, adding in an e-mail it was not "worth writing about."

Two top Florida elections officials, both Republicans, faulted the GOP mailing, calling it "confusing" and "unfortunate" because of a potential to undermine voter confidence by making them question the accuracy of their registrations.

"It is unfortunate, because it does put a lot of doubt in people's minds," said Secretary of State Kurt Browning, the state's top elections official.

After his office received dozens of calls, Duval County Supervisor of Elections Jerry Holland issued a media alert that his office had nothing to do with it. "They were upset folks and they were very concerned," said Holland, a Republican. "They mainly said their party (listing) was different than it was."

Some Democrats suspect a motive beyond raising money. The first-class GOP mailing has a "Do not forward" instruction on the envelope, meaning they will be returned to the GOP if a recipient has had mail forwarded, perhaps to a summer address, or has moved.

Letters returned as undeliverable can be compiled into "challenge lists" of unverifiable addresses and can be used to challenge voters' eligibility during early voting or on Election Day. The vote suppression technique is known as "vote caging."

"That postcard is a little disconcerting," said letter-recipient Steve Hemping of Naples, chairman of the Collier County Democratic Party and a state party official. "You don't know if they're going to use it to challenge somebody's right to vote."

The letter asks recipients to note changes on an "RNC File Card" and return it to the party by Sept. 26. The card shows a nine-digit "voter ID" number, but the supervisor of elections in Jacksonville's Duval County said the numbers are wrong and do not match the state's voter database.

Hillsborough Democratic Party Chairman Michael Steinberg said it makes no sense for Republicans to question the party affiliations of Democratic voters. "I don't understand their logic," he said.

Allegations of Republican vote caging in predominantly black Jacksonville precincts in the 2004 presidential election surfaced last year in testimony before the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee.

Despite Concerns - Design of MLK Memorial Approved

    Michael E. Ruane, Washington Post

    - A powerful federal arts commission this morning approved the overall design of the planned Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial near the Mall, but several commission members still were critical of the mammoth sculpture of the civil rights leader that is the memorial’s centerpiece.

The memorial’s creators agreed to submit further details of the sculpture to the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts for review but said the commission’s approval allows them to proceed with the project. They said they planned to apply to the Interior Department for building permits next week.

The vote by the commission, which is required by law, appeared to clear the way for construction of the $120 million crescent-shaped memorial on the northwest shore of the Tidal Basin near the FDR Memorial.

rikyrah: "McAncient" continues to be EXPOSED!! This time by HuffPost!

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/09/18/mccain...
McCain Camp Removed Bush Criticism From Wall Street Statement

These people "work overtime" in order to deceive [This is long. So I'll just use the first few paragraphs.]

In private late Tuesday evening, the McCain campaign circulated a draft statement on the Wall Street crisis that attacked the Bush administration for a slow and "inconsistent" response, and charged that executives at several financial firms had made "misleading and false" statements.

But the criticism never appeared. After being circulated not only among McCain aides but also major campaign donors who have worked in the investment industry, the language was softened.

The official McCain statement released Wednesday morning made no mention of the Bush administration, instead accusing management and speculators of "creat[ing] this mess."

The earlier draft, obtained by the Huffington Post, was circulated among top advisers such as Douglas Holtz-Eakin and Matt McDonald, as well as some major donors, including Greg Wendt of the Capital Group. It expressed "concern[s] that the Administration has been inconsistent with the way they have dealt with each crisis. Taxpayer money was used for Bear Stearns, it was not used for Lehman Brothers and now it is used again for AIG. The American people need to know the thinking and the standards behind using taxpayer's money to support these private sector institutions."

The draft added, "We also should know why the Administration did not deal with the problems at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac sooner."

This proclamation was far more caustic to President Bush than the language McCain ultimately used. Indeed, in the official statement, McCain never mentioned concerns about the administration.

Criticism of Wall Street executives was also toned down. In the draft, McCain accused management at Bear Stearns, Lehman Brothers, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and AIG of making "misleading and false" statements, and called for "an investigation into whether these senior managers were knowingly dishonest with the public when they knew their companies were in deep trouble."

McCain's final version simply stated, "Important questions remain to be answered by Wall Street. Did executives mislead investors and regulators about the severity of the problem?"

I assume John McCain chose Sarah Palin as his vice-presidential partner in a fit of pique because the Republican money men refused to let him have the stuffed male shirt he really wanted. She added nothing to the ticket that the Republicans didn't already have sewn up, the white trash vote, the demographic that sullies America's name inside and outside its borders yet has such a curious appeal for the right.

    So why do it?

It's possible that Republican men, sexual inadequates that they are, really believe that women will vote for a woman just because she's a woman. They're unfamiliar with our true natures. Do they think vaginas call out to each other in the jungle night? I mean, I know men have their secret meetings at which they pledge to do manly things, like being irresponsible with their semen and postponing household repairs with glue and used matches. Guys will be guys, obviously.

But do they not know that women have been trained to resent other women and that they only learn to suppress this by constantly berating themselves and reading columns like this one? I'm a feminist who understands that women can nurse terrible and delicate woman hatred.

My credentials are solid; Palin cannot out-hick me. Until I fled at 18, I never lived in a northern town of more than 12,000 people. My towns were full of Sarah Palins. These types are fine, such as they are, until they leave town and turn fraudulent. They label themselves "the salt of the earth". It's when they try to make that a qualification for a greater glory that things turn unpleasant.

I never claimed a higher moral standing for coming from a great big empty on the map. Small towns are places that smart people escape from, for privacy, for variety, for intellect, for survival. Palin should have stayed home.

Canada has lots of hockey moms. They're called Fran and Nancy. They have cruel haircuts and their voices shake the rafters of the rink as their rink-rats play. How can I translate the hearty, jollying-along Palin for British audiences? She's a working class Joan Hunter Dunn. It's those volleyball shoulders and field-hockey thighs, the energy, the bullying, and the utter self-confidence in every lie she tells.

Salt-of-the-earthers don't lie! But Palins do. I watched Palin last night, my mouth open, my eyeballs drying out, my hand making shaky notes. I read them aghast.

Did she really joke, "You know the difference between a hockey mom and a pitbull? Lipstick."?

Did she just blow kisses to the audience?

Palin Cancels Appearances NOT Because of Poll Numbers

    Hmmmmm….

Sarah Palin has cancelled her two-day swing through California next week, the McCain campaign said today.

Whether the planned Sept. 25 fundraiser in Silicon Valley, which will raise money for state and federal GOP efforts, will go on without Palin as headliner is unclear.

Campaign spokesman Rick Gorka said the Alaskan governor’s calendar was “fluid” and he could not say where Palin would go instead of California, nor if she would reschedule a visit here before Election Day. McCain and Palin are campaigning today and tomorrow in Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota. Then they will head to Florida, which is shaping up to be a very competitive state.

A Field Poll released earlier this week found that while Palin had helped McCain solidify support among his GOP base in California, the ticket had made no inroads among independent voters, a key bloc the GOP needs to win to be competitive in California. Among likely voters, the Barack Obama-Joe Biden ticket has a 16 percentage point advantage over the Republicans.

And a national poll out today showed Obama with a 5-point lead over McCain, a reversal from their standings before the Wall Street economic crisis hit.

Gorka said the decision to send her elsewhere next week was not made because of the polling results. “It’s a scheduling thing,” he said.

So…it’s a “scheduling thing”, but “her calendar is fluid” and nobody knows where she’s going to show up next. And it is NOT, I repeat, NOT because of poll numbers. <.b>Maybe she was afraid they’d make her play “Stump the Candidate.”

McCain Accuses Obama of Killing Immigration Bill

(Newser) – John McCain is accusing Barack Obama of trying to kill an immigration overhaul that both candidates supported, reports the Los Angeles Times. McCain is running a Spanish-language ad attacking Obama for undermining the immigration bill. He has also criticized the Democrat for supporting amendments “that would have killed the legislation.” But the director of an immigration group calls McCain’s attack “stunning in its misrepresentation.”

While both candidates supported the bill in the Senate, it was McCain who backed away from it at one point. Under heavy fire for his stance during the Republican primaries, McCain “said he would vote against his own immigration bill,” notes a Democratic senator. Many observers believe the compromise bill failed because of conservative opposition.

rikyrah: Even Elizabeth Drew is CONFUSED!

    http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0908/13541...
    How John McCain Lost Me

I have been a longtime admirer of John McCain. During the 2000 Republican presidential primaries I publicly defended McCain against the pro-Bush Republicans’ whisper campaign that he was too unstable to be president (aware though I was that he had a temper). Two years later I published a positive book about him, “Citizen McCain.”

I admired John McCain as a man of principle and honor. He had become emblematic of someone who spoke his mind, voted his conscience, and demonstrated courage in bucking his own party and fighting for what he believed in. He gained a well-deserved reputation as a maverick. He was seen as taking principled positions on such issues as tax equity (opposing the newly elected Bush’s tax cut), fighting political corruption, and, later, taking on the Bush administration on torture. He came off as a man of decency. He took political risks.

Having emerged, ironically, from his bitter 2000 primary fight against Bush as an immensely popular figure, he set out to be a new force in American politics. He decided to form and lead a centrist movement, believing that that was where the country was and needed leadership. He went against the grain of his party on the environment, patients’ bill of rights, and, of course, campaign finance reform.

    SKIP

Other aspects of McCain, including his temperament, began to trouble me. He seemed disturbingly bellicose. He gave the Iraq war unflagging support no matter the facts. He still talks about “winning” the war, though George W. Bush gave that up some time ago. As the war became increasingly unpopular, he employed the useful technique of blaming its execution rather than recognizing the misconceptions that had led him to be one of the most enthusiastic champions of the war in the first place.

Similarly, in making a big issue of having backed the surge (and simplifying the reasons for its apparent success), he preempts debate on the very idea of the war. He has talked (and sung) loosely about attacking Iran. More recently, he oversimplified this summer’s events in Georgia and made intemperate remarks about Russia, about which he’s been more belligerent than the administration for some time. (He has his own set of neocons.)

There’s an argument that all this compromise wasn’t necessary: some very smart political analysts believed from the outset that McCain could win the nomination by sticking with his old self. And they still believe that McCain won the nomination not because he gave himself over to the base but as a result of a process of elimination of inferior candidates who divided up the conservative vote, as these observers had predicted. (These people insisted on anonymity because McCain is known in Republican circles to have a long memory and a vindictive streak.)

By then I had already concluded that that there was a disturbingly erratic side of McCain’s nature. There’s a certain lack of seriousness in him. And he does not appear to be a reflective man, or very interested in domestic issues. One cannot imagine him ruminating late into the night about, say, how to educate and train Americans for the new global and technological challenges.

McCain’s making a big issue of “earmarks” and citing entertaining examples of ridiculous-sounding ones, circumvents discussion of the larger issues of the allocation of funds in the federal budget: according to the Office of Management and Budget, earmarks represent less than one percent of federal spending.

Now he’s back to declaring himself a maverick, but it’s not clear what that means. If he gains the presidency, is he going to rebel against the base he’s now depending on to get him elected? (Hence his selection of running mate Sarah Palin.) Campaigns matter. If he means “shaking up the system” (which is not the same thing), opposing earmarks doesn’t cut it.

McCain’s recent conduct of his campaign – his willingness to lie repeatedly (including in his acceptance speech) and to play Russian roulette with the vice-presidency, in order to fulfill his long-held ambition – has reinforced my earlier, and growing, sense that John McCain is not a principled man.
In fact, it’s not clear who he is.

Elizabeth Drew is author of “Citizen McCain” (Simon & Schuster, 2002; paperback with new introduction, 2008.)

He needs to have rappers and thugs in his ads.

He needs to draw a correlation between OJ Simpson and Obama.

Pictures of high prices at gas states and FOR SALE/FORECLOSURE signs come up on the screen. Then Mr. Voiceover comes on and says "America's going through some of the toughest challenges she's ever faced. People are losing homes and jobs and struggling to make it from day to day. John McCain and Sarah Palin have the right plan for change to help hard working Americans (picture of a hard working white guy), strenghten our military (picture of a white Marine) and improve our education so Americans can get back to work (picture of a white lady going to work). John McCain and Sarah Palin always put Country First (picture of white people holding big ass COUNTRY FIRST signs) and they're ALWAYS proud of their country (American flag flying). Do we really want to take a chance on our country's future just to make history ? (picture of a little white kid looking up innocently at the screen).

Transparent . . . McCain is getting his a*s kicked on the economy so he needs a distraction.

Enter the race card. . .

Hoping the Sunday talk shows get caught up in a battle over what is and what is not racist. Hoping that cable news keeps replaying the ad over and over again. Hoping to play on the longstanding tradition where economic concerns meet racial resentment . . . where the one thing poor whites hate more than an out-of-touch Republican is a couple of uppity nigras.

Two menacing black men in a mysterious black backdrop. . . juxtaposed with the classic imagery of a victimized white woman with a white backdrop.

As mentioned in the article: "And the image of the victim doesn't seem accidental either, given the fact that older white women are a key swing constituency in this election."

Yup. . . McCain ain't slick with this one. He knows exactly what he's doing. He'd rather be called a racist than get tied to this economic crisis. He can survive the latter . . . but he can't survive the former.

    DISTRACTION!

Ex-Pistons star Bing running for Detroit mayor
Print Sep 19th, 2008 | DETROIT -- Businessman and ex-Detroit Pistons star Dave Bing says he's running for Detroit mayor.
Bing tells Detroit Free Press columnist Rochelle Riley he'll enter the Feb. 24 primary election.
The top two finishers face off in a May 5 special election to choose a permanent replacement for the jail-bound Kwame Kilpatrick, who stepped down Thursday after pleading guilty for lying in court.

Ex-city council President Ken Cockrel Jr. became interim mayor Friday and says he'll run in the primary.

The 64-year-old Bing says Detroit needs a mayor "with a clean, fresh outlook." He played for the Pistons from 1966 to 1975 and has run the Bing Group for 28 years.

The editors of the Washington Post, this morning:

One element of the Obama campaign's brief against Mr. McCain is that he supported repeal of the law separating commercial banks from investment banks. "He's spent decades in Washington supporting financial institutions instead of their customers," Mr. Obama said yesterday. "Phil Gramm, one of the architects of the deregulation in Washington that led directly to this mess on Wall Street, is also the architect of John McCain's economic plan." Would it be churlish to point out that another author of the Gramm-Leach-Bliley law is former congressman Jim Leach, a founder of Republicans for Obama? Or that Obama advisers Lawrence H. Summers and Robert E. Rubin supported the repeal — which was signed by President Bill Clinton?
  • Bisci · 1 year ago
    More from the WaPo:

TO LISTEN to Sen. Barack Obama, Sen. John McCain is a Johnny-come-lately to the cause of regulating financial markets. “He has consistently opposed the sorts of common-sense regulations that might have lessened the current crisis,” Mr. Obama said in New Mexico yesterday. “When I was warning about the danger ahead on Wall Street months ago because of the lack of oversight, Senator McCain was telling the Wall Street Journal — and I quote — ‘I’m always for less regulation.’ ”

But the full quotation from Mr. McCain’s March interview with the Journal’s editorial board belies Mr. Obama’s one-sided rendition. The Republican candidate went on to say, “But I am aware of the view that there is a need for government oversight. I think we found this in the subprime lending crisis — that there are people that game the system and if not outright broke the law, they certainly engaged in unethical conduct which made this problem worse. So I do believe that there is role for oversight.” …

In 2006, he pushed for stronger regulation of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac — while Mr. Obama was notably silent. “If Congress does not act, American taxpayers will continue to be exposed to the enormous risk that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac pose to the housing market, the overall financial system, and the economy as a whole,” Mr. McCain warned at the time.

There should not be one black person voting for john mc this year, not one! Every single day they are coming out with some racists ad and what do the 5 black repubs do, look the other way.

A portion of Obama's press conference on the economy held today:
"One last point - we did not arrive at this crisis by some accident in history. What led us to this point was years and years of a philosophy in Washington and on Wall Street that viewed even common sense regulation and oversight as unwise and unnecessary; that shredded consumer protections and loosened the rules of the road. CEOs and executives got reckless, lobbyists got what they wanted, and politicians in both parties looked the other way until it was too late. It is now the American people who've paid the price. The events of this week I believe have rendered a final verdict on that failed philosophy, and it will end if I am president of the United States. We have to build upon the ideas I've laid out over the last several years about how to modernize our financial regulatory system in this country, and that establishes common sense rules of the road for our financial system to help restore confidence throughtout the financial system."

Finally, given the gravity of this situation, and based on conversations I have had with both Secretary Paulson and Chairman Bernanke, I will refrain from presenting a more detailed blueprint about how an immediate plan might be structured until I can fully review the details of the plan proposed by the Treasury and the Federal Reserve. I think it's critical at this point that the markets and the public have confidence that the work will be unimpeded by partisan wrangling, and that leaders of both parties work in concert to solve the problem at hand."
    Have a great birthday, carolinagirl.

    From PoliticalInaction.com:

    September 19, 2008
SHOCK POLL: Iowa out of play...........

Bush won Iowa in 2004 and 2000. Obama has put Iowa pretty much out of reach. The gold standard of pollsters, SurveyUSA, puts the Iowa race at 54O 43M. That is 7 electoral votes McCain needs.

For what it is worth, 538.com has Obama winning the election 71% of the time.....

UPDATE: By the by, it drives me up a wall that no one in the drive by media talks about the importance of Iowa. 3 key facts:

It is a 14 electoral vote swing in Obama's favor.

It shores up Minnesota, Wisconsin, makes Nebraska's split electoral votes possible, and it gives Obama a fighting chance in Missouri.

Finally, and most importantly, it makes an Obama presidency possible. Obama has to have multiple ways to the White House. Why? Because if it was only Ohio and Florida, McCain would camp out in the those states, spend most of his money there, and the smear campaign of Barack Obama would be, and probably still will be, overwhelming. But here is the thing.....if McCain has to defend multiple places, he can't conduct the vicious attacks without turning off voters somewhere where he is vulnerable. Obama needs to steal the equivalent of Ohio from McCain and protect all other Kerry states. That is 20 electoral votes. He is 33% there. New Mexico gets him 60% of the way there. That gives him 3 options remaining: Colorado(10), Virginia(13), or Indiana(11). If he didn't have Iowa, he would have to win two of those three, which is probably impossible, or at least not very likely. But with Iowa, he only needs one. This spreads McCain devastatingly thin in message and in resources. McCain has to appeal to a broad swath of people, but he can't do it because he isn't that versatile. Iowa made and now makes Barack Obama possible. Barack Obama's strategy is to bankrupt McCain in Florida and Ohio, then win it with Iowa, Colorado, New Mexico, and Virginia for good measure.

Why do we not hear the MSM talking about this?

To admit that Obama and his campaign was this smart....they won't do it.
  • msmartin · 1 year ago
They don't have to - we already knew it. But you can bet your ass they'll be coughing it up election night and the days that follow!

And McCain chose a dud VP who he can't freely send out to campaign on her own. The optics are bad for him with tiny crowds, while his VP has large crowds. Also they're terrified she might start ad-libbing. McCain has to follow her around just to get an audience. Joe and Barack can cover twice as much territory, with Joe focusing on a specific demographic.

  • indie-ed · 1 year ago
McCain did not make Franklin Raines black. McCain did not choose Raines as an economic advisor.

Today, the second shoe drops as McCain launches an ad again tying Obama to Jim Johnson( who BTW is white) who played an even more prominent role in Obama's campaign and fundraising efforts.

These links to Fannie and Freddie will harm Obama and McCain will hammer them home.

No racebaiting here, Just facts. Obama is up to his ears in Fannie/Freddie, money, influence peddling and corruption.

Fact. In 2005 McCain cosponsored legislation that predicted the current crisis. In 2003 the NYT ran an article outlining the reforms to Fannie and Freddie proposed by the Bush Administration.

Congress blocked these reforms. Barack Obama, Chris Dodd, Barney Frank, Charlie Rangel, the Fannie/Freddie family: the Congressional Black Caucus, Jamie Gorelick, Jim Johnson, Franklin Raines...

And Nancy Peolsi has the nerve to lay this solely at the feet of the Bush Adminstration. What a joke. Now Harry Reid, 'has no idea' what to do...

Congress has become irrelevant to the whole crisis and McCain, Paulson and Republicans will step in to fill calm the fears of the American people and set the course for the future.

Meanwhile Obama throws Raines under the bus (even the the Washinton Post twice reported, without objection from Obama, that Raines was an advisor), offers no comment on the AIG takeover, consults sub-prime advocate Alan Goolsbee on what to do next...

Time to play the old (lame) race card again and get back to bashing Sarah Palin...cause desperate times call for desperate measures...

    Please, check out the facts

Fact Check: Did Obama 'profit' from Fannie and Freddie?
    Posted: 10:16 AM ET

Did Obama profit from Fannie and Freddie?
    Statement:
Amid "corruption at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac," Sen. Barack Obama "profited from this system of abuse and scandal. While Fannie and Freddie were working to keep Congress away from their house of cards, Senator Obama was taking their money. He got more, in fact, than any other member of Congress, except for the Democratic chairman of the committee that oversees them." —Sen. John McCain, at a campaign stop Friday, September 19, in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

What are the facts? Find out after the jump.

    The Facts
Federal law forbids candidates from receiving money directly from companies. The nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics tracks donations from employees of various companies. The center's list of contributions from Fannie and Freddie employees places Obama second. Ahead of him is Sen. Chris Dodd,

Democratic chairman of the Senate Banking Committee.

The total listed for Obama is $126,349 — a tiny fraction of the approximately $390 million his campaign has raised, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. The list shows McCain has received a total of $21,550 from Fannie and Freddie employees. The list includes donations of at least $200 from those who receive paychecks from Fannie and Freddie. It also includes donations from political action committees — pooled contributions from employees. Obama decided early in his presidential run not to accept PAC contributions, but the Center for Responsive Politics' list includes all contributions for members of Congress dating back to 1989 — including Obama and McCain's Senate campaigns.

The New York Times has published a separate list looking at contributions from "directors, officers, and lobbyists for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac" for the 2008 campaign cycle. That list — using figures from the Federal Election Commission — shows McCain receiving $169,000, while Obama received only $16,000.

Explaining the difference, the Center for Responsive Politics said on its Web site that it does not include members of the board of directors because they could serve on boards of various companies. Their contributions are listed along with other employees of the companies they work for. And the center says lobbyists usually represent multiple clients as well, so their contributions are listed under their lobbying firms — except in-house lobbyists, who are included in the center's list.

The mortgage giants Fannie and Freddie became symbols of the nation's economic mess — and, to critics, of corporate greed — after the government recently took them over to bail them out, making donations linked to the company in any way potential political fodder.

    VERDICT
Partially true, but misleading. Donations don't come from companies. A list of employee contributions puts Obama second, but a different list including lobbyists and directors shows McCain getting more.

One of John McCain's ecnonomic advisors, Aquiles Suarez, was in charge of lobbying over $47 mil for Fannie Mae . Campaign manager Rick Davis lobbied AGAINST regulation of Fannie Mae as part of the Homeownership Alliance.

John McCain has over 170 lobbyists working on behalf of his campaign.

Barack and Michelle Obama spent 20 years following the racist BLT doctrine, at a racist church that promoted it, and close friends with the racist Rev. Wright who preached it. Yes, racism clearly exists!
  • nickwah22 · 1 year ago
You, sir/ma'am, are a joke, no offense. You base your judgment of Barack Obama off of 15 minutes of chopped and screwed video footage of Barack's preacher and then speak ill-informed, with no support for your statements. But, that is all I will say on the topic, nor will I even bother to discuss McCain's choice of associates.

At least we can agree that racism exists - prime example, McCain in his old man ignorance calling Asians Gooks.

What do you have to say now?
  • Karmi · 1 year ago
BLT is a racist doctrine...not some "15 minute" clip.
  • nickwah22 · 1 year ago
    I just can't with you.

If you see Black people liberating themselves through religion as racist then that's an issue that is a personal issue that you probably feel strongly about. Clearly Obama is guilty by association in your "opinion," but when has Obama ever exhibited racism? You probably know nothing of what Wright preached except what you saw on FoxNews and on the little sites you link to and I feel confident in saying so based on the posts you've made here at JJP.

But while you want to talk about someone being racists why don't you think about McCain's relations with Hagee and Parsley, his "Spiritual Guide."

We here at JJP are concerned with the issues (do you even know what they are??). You, boy, have nothing to contribute to the conversations regarding the ISSUES because you are no different than McCain and Palin, weaving a web of lies and confusion and hoping the rest of the idiots get stuck in your web. Stop lying, Karmi. You can't erase my comments here and you still can't back up your bogus claim:

“The Black Liberation Theology is nothing more than a black version of the Ku Klux Klan, but in this case it’s about Black Supremacy and Black Separatism instead of the Klan’s white versions!”

#1 __ BLT has no history of lynching or church bombings - i.e. violence.
#2 __ The BLT at TUCC is obviously embraced by Trinity's white members.
#3 __ Rev. Wright counseled a Black woman, advised her to go through with her marriage to a White man and married the two -- i.e. supporting interracial marriage.
#4 __ Trinity is part of a largely white Christian denomination and fellowships regularly with their white Christian brothers and sisters who express how welcomed they feel at Trinity.

Those simple facts of which you are persistently in denial makes your claims of racism, Black separatism and (you must be out of your mind) Black supremacy utterly ridiculous.

Note: On every single one of the points #1, #2, #3 and #4, the KKK or the World Church of the Creator (you know, the racist church I dared you to honestly compare Trinity to) prove to be both racist and the opposite of BLT/TUCC.

Karmi --> YOU ARE A LIAR!!!

A liar and a flea. None of your bs stands up under scrutiny.
You whined "Hate is Hate…Racism is Racism." when your bogus "black version of the KKK" idea exploded in your face.

No. The KKK stands alone and BLT/TUCC are nothing like the KKK. I just posted FOUR points that prove that. FOUR points you can't dispute. FOUR facts that leave you making illogical argument after illogical argument.

That's why your dumb azz co-signs the historically illiterate and intellectually bankrupt bs promoted by NBRA. That's why you deleted posts of mine...

Too many indisputable arguments from me and too many PRIMARY SOURCES... too many INDISPUTABLE FACTS!!

Barack and Michelle broke off their friendship with Rev. Wright. Why? Later, they left the TUCC. Why?
  • Nquest · 1 year ago
You typed some words but you still can't defend your bogus claim. In fact, you just screamed, "Uncle." Notice how you dropped that BLT = racist bs.

NOTICE HOW YOU CAN'T DEBATE ME!

Instead, you go from one lame whispered assertion to the other. Just like a punk.

Note: Asking "why?" is not an argument. It shows your lack of an argument.

    "3 gay men were murdered..."

Okay, no Lazarus jokes from me (to you)... lol
And I don't know what the Biblical character's orientation was but your arguments are flat out gay. They sure aren't... straight. You know, like in straight to the point as in showing a straight, direct connection.

No, you have to beg people to JUMP TO CONCLUSIONS with you.

The media, oddly, keeps trotting out this line that "Obama can't close the deal" but that's the exact description thing of all these lame arguments of yours: you can't close the deal.

You can come up with all kinds of crazy azz ASSERTIONS but you never back them up.

And all that has me wondering about you Karmi... you and your obsession with this idea of Black Supremacy.

I think you're trying to tell us something about yourself. Sounds like you feel inadequate.
  • Karmi · 1 year ago
Allow me to help you...Barack and Michelle split from Wright and TUCC when Wright and TUCC were discovered to be racist.

That racism is about to come up again...for the public to take another look at.
  • Nquest · 1 year ago
    "discovered to be racist..."

BULLSH*T!!! You've yet to make the argument that TUCC is racist. And CIRCULAR ARGUMENTS don't count, Karmi.

You got FOUR points to respond to. Let's see if you got the intelligence to do it.

FYI... That's FOUR points where your charges of racism fall flat. FOUR points that show how the KKK produces the opposite effect to TUCC/BLT because the KKK:

#1 __ KKK has a history of racist violence - lynching, bombings.
#2 __ KKK has no known non-white members.
#3 __ KKK is against interracial marriage.
#4 __ KKK actually espouses separatism.

Barack and Michelle split over politics the same way McCain split with his past principled, "maverick" stances.

That racism is about to come up again...

You are out of your league and showing your pathetic (and deteriorating) emotional state of mind.

Whatever "racism" you want to "come up again" would only go to show how much racism resides in people, like you, trying desperately to say "BLT = racist" enough times for you to actually believe it.

You can't even convince yourself that BLT/TUCC is racist. Like a lame, you tried to say BLT = Black Supremacy/Black Separatism but your asthmatic azz can't keep your head in the sand that long.

NEVER at NO TIME have you EVER pointed how TUCC/BLT actually promote or practices Black Supremacy or Black Separatism. That sh*t won't fly when we know Trinity, which has embraced BLT, remains and continues to fellowship in a largely white Christian denomination and welcomes and embraces White members and visitors, alike (which is part of the reason, after more than 30 years of BLT at TUCC, ignorant White folk are just now "discovering" it).

As I've said before, Rev. Wright, e.g., can't be the racist you want him to be when he says, "different does not mean deficient." That makes him different from the KKK types. They are very vocal in saying something different. You know, the opposite version of the conclusion made about "different."
  • hustleandfloe · 1 year ago
will let you get back to your argument down here but did want to note that BLT may or may not be racist, but it is a racialization of theology - as such corruption of christian belief as defined by the theology that holds Jesus as bona fide historical figure and thus, as God, according to his own claims. A preacher of that theology may or may not be racist. A BLT preacher can be BLT-heavy without being racist, but the line seems thin and easy to fall over.

What I hate is that the value and freedom to worship culturally - vs. worshiping one's own race or denigrating others - is a true Christian freedom. We can mix and not - and both are all good. It is possible to enjoy Black culture and find comfort there as a Black person with none of that remotely having to do with hating white.

But we's all confused. There is no black theology or white theology that can be justifiable. We can justify theology held by both and operating in a cultural context - because we ain't defining theology for ourselves and giving weight to some racial standard.

I think if you could hear the black expository preaching of W.J. Shaw, Caesar Clark, Gardner C. Taylor, Wyatt Tee Walker, or Manuel Scott, you'd be happy to pull up a pew on sunday after sunday...

    Thanks for the reply Hustleandfloe,

I’m against any doctrine, theology, dogma or religion that teaches and/or promotes hate, and/or claims ownership of God – particularly any one of the main three Abrahamic Religions. Thru Judaism, the other two are based on the God/s of ancient Sumer and Egypt civilizations – primarily the Gods Ptah and Enki, which Yahweh can be traced back to. God cannot be owned…does not require worship…does not require belief in or faith in, and does not punish or reward humans.

The Democratic Party is about promoting hate, e.g. hate the “Evil Rich”, “BIG Corporations”, “White Men”, “White America”, etcetera etcetera etcetera. BLT is just one of the forms that the Democratic Party uses to promote hate.

Your comment makes the BLT bigger than it is. It has history going back to 1966. ..pales in comparison to the history of Black expository preaching.

Take a look at Dr. Cleophus James Larue, Professor of Preaching at Princeton Theological Seminary: "[the book] The Heart of Black Preaching is an effort to go back into three hundred years of black preaching history to see if we could discover some thread that ran throughout the whole of our preaching in this country. What I was able to discover is that there is in black preaching a common thread that centers around a sovereign God. Throughout history, in every period of our lives upon these shores, we have always believed that a sovereign, all powerful God was at work on our behalf. Had we not believed that I don’t know if we could have come through the dark night of slavery or the oppression of segregation and many other things that we have been able to come through.
    http://www.csec.org/csec/sermon/LaRue_4517.htm

That's definitely Black, but not Black theology - just plain old theology of a sovereign God.

On God requiring worship, we differ on the historical record of the bible, e.g. Romans 12 or Luke 4:8 which are pretty clear on God saying he's worthy of worship and demanding that. worship.

Not talking theology, per se, as much as history of the Bible and Jesus. "Some writers may toy with the fancy of a 'Christ-myth', but they do not do so on the ground of historical evidence. The historicity of Christ is as axiomatic for the unbiased historian as the historicity of Julius Caesar. It is not historians who propagate the 'Christ-myth' theories." (F.F. Bruce: 'The New Testament documents: Are they reliable?')

Essentially, historicity is not in dispute by secular of religious scholars. Jesus' theology, what he said, is what he himself has left us to believe or not, not forcing belief but warning us against rejecting him and even further commanding worship. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historicity_of_Jes...

The warning is for us to stop the silly judging of each other because we'll all stand before God one day:

Rom 14:10 But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at nought thy brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ.

Rom 14:11 For it is written, [As] I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.

White Americans were shocked to see what was being taught at TUCC. Sure, white Americans were use to the likes of J. Jackson, A. Sharpton, and a few others, but had not realized that hatred and anti-Americanism were being taught at many black churches. Most white Americans had figured that black churches were about “Black expository preaching” of the past, which was not about teaching hatred.

I am probably more vocal about BLT than most white Americans; however, I suspect that their silence will show up in November as votes against Obama.

A ‘form’ of BLT may have been started by the NCNC in 1996, but it was not the doctrine of hatred that James Cone started with his Black Theology and Black Power (1969), and his A Black Theology of Liberation (1970). James Cone’s works were also heavily influenced by Islamism and Marxism…as he has stated.

The NT offers very little of Jesus’ own words, and offers a lot of words from the Roman citizen Paul, i.e. Pauline Christianity. Even the four Gospels have difficulty agreeing on what Jesus said, and/or even what actually happened, e.g. the sign on the cross, the crucifixion, and the resurrection. The few actual recorded words of Jesus are misunderstood to this day. Today’s NT is actually what the Roman Emperor Constantine I authorized, i.e. Pauline Christianity. Thomas Paine’s The Age Of Reason - Part I does a much better job at explaining the NT’s many discrepancies that I can.

ABC NEWS: Republicans Back Obama‘s Version of Meeting with Iraqi Leaders :
    http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2008/09...

"The Obama campaign said that the Post report consisted of "outright distortions."

Lending significant credence to Obama's response is the fact that -- though it's absent from the Post story and other retellings -- in addition to Obama and Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, this July meeting was also attended by Bush administration officials such as U.S. Ambassador to Iraq Ryan Crocker and the Baghdad embassy's Legislative Affairs advisor Rich Haughton, as well as a Republican senator, Chuck Hagel of Nebraska.

Attendees of the meeting back Obama's account, including not just Sen. Jack Reed, D-RI, but Hagel, Senate Foreign Relations Committee staffers from both parties. Officials of the Bush administration who were briefed on the meeting by the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad also support Obama's account and dispute the Post story and McCain attack.

The Post story is "absolutely not true," Hagel spokesman Mike Buttry told ABC News."
