Jack and Jill Politics: Guess Who’s Back? - Tavis Smiley

  • CPL · 1 year ago
I've written about Tavis at Black Commentator when Glen Ford was the Editor.

    http://www.blackcommentator.com/173/173_guest_s...

He's still drunk off haterade and he doesn't like women calling him out for stunts like this. Jasmyne Cannick received a threat from him when she wrote an article dissing him for the same bullshyt - he called her office and tried to get her fired. She offered to put her boss on the line and he backed down like the punk Negro byotch he really is.

He needs to shut up and wise up because the rest of us are rising up and leaving him behind with the kids Bush promised to educate. That must be some real sweet water Missy Hillary's giving him to tote for him to devolve like he has.

Tavis is as fake as they come. He makes his money off of oppression. Why the hell would he want transcendence? How does that help the bank account? Buy my covenant books, go to my corporate sponsored events. In his world, there isn't a black person in America that can function without him. His power is threatened because Obama made it without having to attend his book pimping events.

I don't believe for one second that Tavis' heart was in the wrong place. I think Tavis loves Black People and truly believes he feel's he doing his best to help the cause. Though I didn't/don't agree with his statements in regards to Obama, we have to respect his past, present, and future works.

Tavis, unlike many of others, has been able to bring some of the best and brights african-americans together to talk about some real issues affecting Black People. Contrary to popular belief it takes money to fund these endeavors, and i doubt Tavis is making it rain off SOTBU sponsorship money.

I think it's cool to be critical against Tavis but lets not dump on all of his works just because of some of his recent ignorant ego driven comments.

Tavis is about Tavis, everyone since his days at NPR saw that.He first started of trying to be non racial like Obama with his 'New Left' book and ideology.Since he got hired on BET he found he could use his ok looks and vernacular to put himself as a spokesmouth for Black folks. His annual event which is just grandstanding by self important people to feel good about themselves about their degrees and accomplishments. The STATE OF THE BLACK COONION HELD BY TAVIS EVERY YEAR IS A PAPER TIGER AND A FARCE.
  • Town · 1 year ago
Statements like "Obama's gonna find out real soon" are the reason why Tavis is perceived to be drunk off of haterade. What exactly will Obama find out "real soon" that he didn't already find out from the past 6 months? Tavis must think he's the sheriff.
  • TRW · 1 year ago
Uggggggggghhhhhh. Yeah I know. That comment really bothers me. People may dislike Obama's politics, but nobody would argue that the man has sense and intelligence, so why is Tavis talking this nonsense? Of course Obama realizes what he is up against. He realized it back it back in Chicago when other Black legislators tried to do to him, what Tavis is doing right now. He realized it during the primary, when Camp Clinton tried to pull the okie doke. So for Tavis to imply that Obama is about to get "schooled" about "racial transcendence" is extremely condescending.

Dead on! I really think that Tavis was waiting patiently for people like Jesse Jackson to pass the baton to him. Now Obama comes along and says, I'm going to run my own race- without the regular old marginalized players.

Tavis is jealous. It is so evident.
  • jdickenslaw · 1 year ago
I can't stand Tavis either. Ditto to everything you both have said! By the way, how are is programs going w/o TJMS? I think he'll be completely off the air in a year. The TJMS is the platform that allowed him to get these other deals. I just home the TJMS show doesn't allow him to come back.

Enough is enough. I've been letting my DVR capture "Tavis Smiley Shows" from PBS...just like I capture "Charlie Rose Shows." I'm keepin Charile, but Tavis has got to GO. I stoppped watching him a long time ago, but never changed my recording options. Enough is enough.

WHAT IS REALLY SICK IS ALL OF THESE MOTHAF___KAS WAITING FOR *O* TO FAIL.

Here's my news for all of THEM MOTHAF___KAS:

In the event that by some FREAK of Nature, Barack Obama loses...WE will not rush BACK to the side of the "Told-You-Sos."

Neither the Hillaries, nor the Billaries, nor the Tavis Smiley TOMS....We will NEVER align ourselves with your two-faced bull sh**. We will seek out new leadership in the wake of your INEPT BEHAVIOUR....

*O* will win the Presidency in 2008. If he doesn't, then I"M WITH HIM IN 2012...NOT HILLARY, NOT TAVIS, NOT NONE (Admitted use of the double-negative) OF YOU Mo____kas.

The biggest problem with Tavis, for me, was his assumption that black people were too stupid to "critically think" about Obama's records and plans vs. Clinton's records and plans. Every Tuesday and Thursday he would insinuate that "black people" weren't holding Obama "accountable" because we were all voting for Obama "jus cuz" he was black.

See, Tavis thought we were stupid, but black listeners to the Tom Joyner show put on the critical thinking hats and said "Hmm, this brotha sound like he's drunk off of haterade. Bullshit detector activate." Black people activated the bullshit detector and lit his ass up.

He can be salty if he wants to. But I betcha if Obama wins he'll be the first person trying to get that first interview with "President-elect Obama" and when Obama ignores his azz AGAIN, he'll be the first one running to the mic screaming about "Obama's ignoring black media."

    Watch.

  • B-Serious · 1 year ago
People like Tavis are mad at Obama because he doesn't talk about race like they do. Tavis has cornered the market on racial discourse in recent years and Obama threatens his brand. Don't worry, Tavis, there's room for more than one racial philosophy in Black America.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't remember hearing Obama say his election would cure all of our racial oppression or forgive white America for its past transgressions.

This is a serious question (I'm not being facetious): Did Obama specifically say this in one of his books? Has Obama ever specifically talked about "transcending race?" Has he ever said that his election would "transcend race." Or has this talk of a post-racial America come more from tv pundits and "race men" than from Obama himself? I haven't seen Obama campaign on the promise to end racial turmoil.
Is there a quote out there?

If not, then why are some judging Obama by the labels others put on him?

Stop being preocupied with white perceptions. We have no control over stuff like that. People are going to think what they want. Those looking for a "get-out-of-racism" free card alreadly see Obama's nomination as enough of a reason. I've yet to see what black folk lose if Obama wins.

And trust, if it's not Obama, then it'll be someone else. . . the next viable black candidate (10 or 50 years from now) will have to deal with the same question: does this let white folk off the hook? We'll be waiting forever if we use that as a standard. My goodness, people look at Tiger Woods, Oprah, Michael Jordan, Denzel Washington and say that's enough progress to shut black folks up.

It's not like an Obama loss is going to help race matters either . . . Like a racist is gonna wake up on November 6th and say, "Wow, Obama's defeat proves that we have to to fight racism." It ain't gonna happen. Trust, Tavis' job is safe whether Obama wins or loses.

And good point on the whole "lecturing/talking down to black folk" meme. You know . . that whole "cultist" argument is offensive whether it comes from a Clinton supporter or Tavis Smiley (perhaps one in the same?).

All I know is Obama's historic run has brought a lot of people back into the fold. It has raised a lot of interest and people are becoming engaged in the process. That can't be a bad thing.
  • jdickenslaw · 1 year ago
    B-Serious,

Good point! But what irritates me most about Tavis is that he ignores the fact that Obama is addressing issues that concern Black America. Affordable health insurance concerns Black America, and his plan to reduce costs helps the majority of us. Education is a concern to Black America, and his $4,000 grant in exchange for community service is available to all of us no matter what our income levels. Third, getting us out of Iraq, and using the military wisely concerns Black America, because we are very heavily represented in the armed forces.

Tavis's problem is that Obama doesn't address these issues the way he wants them addressed. Its got to be about black people and tailored for black people. We all know he can't win that way, and even the Clinton's didn't phrase their policies in this manner. Tavis will soon find out that he has thought more highly of himself than he ought!
  • B-Serious · 1 year ago
I'll tell you what did it for me. During his SOTBU Tavis had a young woman on the panel to represent the youth movement. She was enthusiastic in her support for Obama and talked about a willingness by those of her age group to get involved in politics for the first time.

Tavis' response was to ask her if she'd feel the same way if Obama loses (keep in mind that this was when Obama was winning 12 straight contests by an average of 33% - and even then Tavis was fixated on an Obama defeat).

Some people are always waiting for the other shoe to drop. Think of it. All of that energy and enthusiasm and Tavis' instinct was to try and rain on her parade. You don't try to kill that kind of enthusiasm . . . you cultivate it so it can last way beyond the 2008 election.

And if that wasn't enough, he let Stephanie Tubbs Jones and Sheila Jackson Lee (either or both, I can't remember) scold black america for giving Clinton and her apologists the cold shoulder. I forget who it was, but I recall one of them specifically saying, "shame on us (black people)."

Tavis is stuck on this idea that black folk are throwing their votes away because we're excited about what's going on. Mind you, we routinely vote over 90% for every other Democratic nominee, but now that the nominee is black, "daddy Tavis" wants to step in and lecture his black children on responsible voting.
  • GreenLadyHere · 1 year ago
B-Serious: I'm trying to exercise much restraint when I even SEE the names of Stephanie Tubbs Jones and Sheila Jackson Lee. On one post, I recommended that "we" start a "Handkerchief Head Drive" and send these 2 ladies all the HANDKERCHIEFS that we could!!! :>) :>) I would love to have made this a reality!! And to be with them as they continued to receive their "JUST REWARDS"! :>) :>) :>) :>)
Oh, yeah, I have lost all respect for "Smiley -n- Stab"!!! :>)
I wonder what billary promised them to make them such sychophants???
  • TRW · 1 year ago
Exactly. Obama consistently talks about health care, education, housing, and the war in Iraq, but for some reason, that isn't good enough. If he doesn't specifically tailor his message to the Black community, he must not care about the Black community even though all of those issues have a direct impact on the Black community.

Look at that fool Nader. He completely ignored Obama's record and the things that he has discussed on the stump regarding those issues, but for some reason, that wasn't good enough. Because Barack didn't specifically tailor his message to the Black community, he was trying to "talk White."

So yeah, there is a lot of hate going on by so-called "liberals" and "progressives" and it ain't pretty.
  • GreenLadyHere · 1 year ago
CPL: How did he not LEARN from his recent experience???? Mess with O-Man [emphasis on MAN vs. "whiny ____ (O.K. I won't say BOY)] baby" and you've got the "VILLAGE" to deal with!! He'd better get a GRIP and RECOGNIZE!!! :>) :>)

    WHEW!!! (DEEP BREATHS!!!)
  • Lynne · 1 year ago
Rikyrah you are exactly right about why Tavis got bashed by TJMS listeners....it wasn't about criticizing Obama...it was about the pure make-no-mistake-about-it green eyed hate that Tavis was spewing every Tue and Thur....He was just hatin....like a 13 ry old girl. It was pathetic....and for all the "we must hold Obama accountable to us" rhetoric that I have heard from Tavis and others....I'll give the first person who can show me what was demanded by Tavis of Al Gore and John Kerry a million dollars.
  • isonprize · 1 year ago
THAT'S what I'm talking about... What did Tavis ask of Gore? Kerry? Clinton, for that matter???

In fact, when did Tavis become the spokesperson for Black people? (except in his own mind?) I'm one of the ones who never liked him, but I held my peace because my girlfriends were crazy about some Tavis.
I couldn't stand it every time he would say "lemme ask you this right quick" and then take ten F#@#$%^ minutes to ask a question!

I think what pissed off Tavis was that his mask was snatched away. White folks who were silly enough to believe his mess were now finding out that he wasn't the 'spokesperson' for Black America and never was.

The thing that struck me about the SOTBU event was how many corporate sponsor logos there were in the background. As if negro thoughts were for sale. Well it's obvious that Tavis' thoughts are, but as for me, I'll speak for myself, thanky...

Amen, bro. I stopped paying any attention to him years ago.

BTW, I think black people, yes, black people are largely responsible for the prominent role Smiley attained regarding the public policy and cultural affairs of African Americans. If Smiley ever had an original thought, it would have died of loneliness.
  • msmartin · 1 year ago
Let me break this down - Tavis is mad because white folks don't like him like they like Barack Obama and I'll be damn if the blacks folks didn't stop following his ass because they like Barack Obama too.
  • Versai · 1 year ago
I watched a little bit of the SOTBU and I wish Tavis had given the third degree to some of his sponsors. The rep from Wells Fargo said a word or 2 at the podium--and no one asked him about the banks subprime mortgages or address charges that the bank preyed on black communities. How cute that Walmart can sponsor the SOTBU--but apparently works really hard to keep their employees from unionizing. Tavis could have jumped on that.

Before "looking over" and "scrutinizing" Obama, he needs to start looking over and asking questions about the companies/people who DO attend his shingding.
  • msmartin · 1 year ago
Why would he do that - it would mean less money for him.
  • LL · 1 year ago
Booker T. Obama doesn't want the Covenant to go mainstream. He's perfectly fine with negotiating the same access issues from the past 30 years.
  • Town · 1 year ago
    Hey Tavis, what's up?

You might want to change that to Booker T. Smiley because while Tavis is talking the talk, Barack is walking the walk. How's that new book coming along?
  • LL · 1 year ago
Hey Michelle- long time no hear!

It's sad that Booker T. Smiley took the covenant more seriously than either Jesse Jackson, Joseph Lowery, Cornel West, or Booker T. Obama. He originally wanted to call it The Contract With Black America, but Reverend Lowery insisted that it be called the Covenant. Now I know why- they weren't serious about holding the political establishment accountable. Contracts can't be signed by surrogates. Booker T. Obama's expressed commitment to the "contract" might have created some FISA flip-flop like situations in which the black community might get upset. From a selfish, political perspective it was probably wise to avoid the SOTBU for the fourth year in a row and marginalize Booker T. Smiley in the same manner that he would eventually marginalize Reverend Jeremiah Wright. In the long term, allowing slick politicians to avoid and ignore a "contract" with your interests in mind will show the establishment how politically immature you are. The black community didn't take the Covenant seriously, so they have no right to complain about being taken for granted.

How's that liquid coal thing working out?

  • Town · 1 year ago
LL Cool Tavis is coming on here claiming that because "black folks" didn't take Tavis' covenant seriously that's why we're in dire straits. Forget slavery, Jim Crow, lynching, bad laws, lack of personal responsibility on the part of some, poor economy, suck ass educational system, etc.

Black folks are in dire straits because WE DIDN'T PURCHASE TAVIS' COVENANT WITH BLACK AMERICA. Riiiiiiiiiiiiiight.

Naw, it's Tavis' bank account that's in dire straits because the fewer people that buy his book or his bullshit, the less paid he is.
