LL Cool Tavis is coming on here claiming that because "black folks" didn't take Tavis' covenant seriously that's why we're in dire straits. Forget slavery, Jim Crow, lynching, bad laws, lack of personal responsibility on the part of some, poor economy, suck ass educational system, etc.

Black folks are in dire straits because WE DIDN'T PURCHASE TAVIS' COVENANT WITH BLACK AMERICA. Riiiiiiiiiiiiiight.

Naw, it's Tavis' bank account that's in dire straits because the fewer people that buy his book or his bullshit, the less paid he is.

BTW, I think black people, yes, black people are largely responsible for the prominent role Smiley attained regarding the public policy and cultural affairs of African Americans. If Smiley ever had an original thought, it would have died of loneliness.

Hey Michelle- long time no hear!

It's sad that Booker T. Smiley took the covenant more seriously than either Jesse Jackson, Joseph Lowery, Cornel West, or Booker T. Obama. He originally wanted to call it The Contract With Black America, but Reverend Lowery insisted that it be called the Covenant. Now I know why- they weren't serious about holding the political establishment accountable. Contracts can't be signed by surrogates. Booker T. Obama's expressed commitment to the "contract" might have created some FISA flip-flop like situations in which the black community might get upset. From a selfish, political perspective it was probably wise to avoid the SOTBU for the fourth year in a row and marginalize Booker T. Smiley in the same manner that he would eventually marginalize Reverend Jeremiah Wright. In the long term, allowing slick politicians to avoid and ignore a "contract" with your interests in mind will show the establishment how politically immature you are. The black community didn't take the Covenant seriously, so they have no right to complain about being taken for granted.

How's that liquid coal thing working out?

I don't believe for one second that Tavis' heart was in the wrong place. I think Tavis loves Black People and truly believes he feel's he doing his best to help the cause. Though I didn't/don't agree with his statements in regards to Obama, we have to respect his past, present, and future works.

Tavis, unlike many of others, has been able to bring some of the best and brights african-americans together to talk about some real issues affecting Black People. Contrary to popular belief it takes money to fund these endeavors, and i doubt Tavis is making it rain off SOTBU sponsorship money.

I think it's cool to be critical against Tavis but lets not dump on all of his works just because of some of his recent ignorant ego driven comments.

I watched a little bit of the SOTBU and I wish Tavis had given the third degree to some of his sponsors. The rep from Wells Fargo said a word or 2 at the podium--and no one asked him about the banks subprime mortgages or address charges that the bank preyed on black communities. How cute that Walmart can sponsor the SOTBU--but apparently works really hard to keep their employees from unionizing. Tavis could have jumped on that.

Before "looking over" and "scrutinizing" Obama, he needs to start looking over and asking questions about the companies/people who DO attend his shingding.
