Jack and Jill Politics: More Clinton Supporters Would Support McCain Than Obama Supporters. REALLY???

  • The Bag of Health and Politics · 1 year ago
It's not true. What this is is people trying to manipulate the polls. It wouldn't surprise me if there's been a wink-wink from the Hillary campaign instructing her rabid supporters to vote this way in the polls. Another thing is that with contested primaries like this, the losing side is *ALWAYS* more likely to say that they won't back the winner because of basic psychology.

*THAT SAID* Hillary Clinton is in the process of destroying the party, and our once in a lifetime chance here. If she gets out this week, Obama will have 5 months to unify the party, and these threats will likely go away. The anger will subside, and people will start comparing him to McCain. But if this is dragged on through June, then Obama only has 2 months to unify the party. That is a serious, serious handicap, and one likely to allow McCain to win.

Super Delegates were created to cut off candidacies of spite, like that of Senator Clinton. It's long passed time for them to step in. I believe the only leader they'll listen to is John Lewis. He MUST make a phone call, for our party and our country.

Still, when almost 3 out of 10 Clinton supporters say they would vote for McCain over Obama, it suggests that divisions are running deep within the Democratic Party.

When I read that I see that 7 out of 10 Clinton supporters would vote for Obama. A few would stay home of course but, overall, nothing to lose sleep about.
  • kathy · 1 year ago
Neither McCain nor Clinton have the kind of presidential quality that people look for in a candidate. Obama has won over a lot of Republicans already, and Hillary has lost far more Democrats from her own party.
The polls and media are assuming that the public is stupid, and when you think that Bush was elected twice, well, maybe they have a point. However, even people I know who are not informed want to know the candidates position on withdrawing from Iraq.

McCain has already doomed his camp with the stuff about mortgages and 100 more years in Iraq.

My advice to Obama would be to ignore the Clinton attacks as much as possible, focus on the issues,

and debate and challenge McCain as much as possible.

It did occur to me that Clinton is staying in this race to raise money for herself. Do the candidates get to keep all the money they raise or does it go back to the donors if not used?

What? if Hillary is such a problem for Obama, why are we not asking Obama to step down? I don't get why any of this is Hillary's fault. If he is this weak and 1/3 of his rivals supporters (who are the dem base) wont support him --- GET OBAMA THE HECK OUT OF HERE. It's simple.

Anyhow, this is all very reasonable as no one really thinks Hillary can't handle the job, and many feel Obama is too naive and inexperienced. At the end of the day, hope and change sounds nice, but at 3 am --- you know the drill. People just end up voting with their heads when it matters - and in the general your head tells you McCain or Clinton not Obama.

    anon 10:51,

Your ignorance is showing! Barack Obama is winning with more states, more delegates, and the popular vote! He smoked Hillary's @ss by winning 12 states in a row with landslide victories!

Are you f-ing kidding? Get the f%%% outta here!

I'm actually not surprised by the poll results. I am surprised that this comes as somewhat of a shock to you guys.

There has always been talk of this. Here's a few of the reasons why some Democrats probably will not be voting for Obama.

1)He will be selected without the voters from FL and MI. These people were disenfranchised. (If the votes in FL had been counted in 2000, we wouldn't have been subjected to 8 years of Bush).

    2) He is just as guilty of race baiting as Clinton, but Hillary gets nailed for it.

    3) He's a Muslim, the anti-christ, son of sam, etc

    4) He's a fake and an opportunist. He can't be trusted.

    5) He's full of rhetoric. There's no beef.

    6) He probably agrees with Rev.Wright.

    7) He's a flip-flopper.

    8) He has no record.

I think most of Obama supporters are so idealistic that they have tunnel vision and they can't grasp that 30% of Democrats who have voted of Hill in each of the primaries is pretty die hard and isn't just composed of feminazis and racists. If Obama gets the nom, they may vote for McCain or stay at home.
  • DWS · 1 year ago
This reminds me of the voting version of "You Got Served" except everytime the Obama campaign makes a legitimate move(or gripe)the Clinton camp comes back with a copied and less authentic version of the same move. It doesn't work on the dance floor and hopefully it will not work in the election.

Time to grow up and move on...HRC if your stuff ain't legit, just quit.

Well now, Barack's back on the stump looking tanned, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed after his time off!

    Anon,

do you care about America? It will be the greatest tragedy for America if Barack doesn't become President. Have you thought of the implications for America if Obama doesn't become President? For one, the implication that the Presidency is an exclusive club open only to certain people. The implication that old loyalties and friendships are what dictates who gets to be nominated. Have you thought of the effect of Having a President(Hillary) who lives in a fantasy world where imaginary snipers are waiting around every corner?

70 percent of Hillary voters will vote for Obama and that's enough.

    :)

    BE HONEST! Are you racist?
  • Ms.Martin · 1 year ago
And, we will get the other 30% in 2012!

    Legal:

You like Hillary, are basing your argument on emotions and not fact.

Obama is winning in every possible category - this is a problem for Hillary!
  • Against Race Politics · 1 year ago
1)He will be selected without the voters from FL and MI. These people were disenfranchised. (If the votes in FL had been counted in 2000, we wouldn't have been subjected to 8 years of Bush).

If Hillary wins the nom, she will do so w/o FL and Michigan. It is NOT the candidates fault that the actions of their elected officials have disenfranchised them. They should be voting them right of office! If 48 other states can follow the rules, why couldn’t they? Oh it’s BO’s fault right? He told them not to follow the rules????

    2) He is just as guilty of race baiting as Clinton, but Hillary gets nailed for it.

    When???????????????????????

    3) He's a Muslim, the anti-christ, son of sam, etc

I won’t even dignify this ignorance with a response.

    4) He's a fake and an opportunist. He can't be trusted.

So when you Lie about being under sniper fire, your child’s near death experience on 9/11, Ireland… on and on!!!...It’s cool, right???

    5) He's full of rhetoric. There's no beef.

I guess Bill is Hillary’s beef. I won’t go there either.

    6) He probably agrees with Rev.Wright.

Probably??????????? Again, not worthy of a comment.

    7) He's a flip-flopper.

So when you sign a pledge that FL and MI votes will not count (HRC) b/c they did NOT follow the rules then change your mind when you are losing, what exactly is that???????

    8) He has no record.

    refer to # 5!

I just don't see that on the Obama side, and among the black voters who believe this, well, there's only so many black people in America, but there are plenty more women.

Jack, you answered your own question about why the poll results look like they look.

If you could see the sample of those polled, there would be many more [white] women than Black people in it.

The results are easy to understand.

    And they don't mean anything.
  • Anonymous · 1 year ago
While you may not believe the polls, the media and the candidates live by them.

Let's face it, this race is in the superdelegates hands and they are waiting it out.

If the trend line described in this poll continues. If Obama is shown to be slipping in NC and IN and Hillary wins big in PA, momentum will shift to Clinton.

Clinton voters are die hard Dems. The backbone of the party. Obama is the candidate of the black community and the young. Conventional wisdom is blacks will always vote Democrat and the young are notoriously unreliable.

Clinton is trying to give superdelegates any and every conceivable out, to let them vote anyway they want. Obama is trying to put them in a box and close the lid.

The party set this whole system up so that the party elites have the authority to determine the nominee regardless of how the rank-and-file vote. They can do whatever they want. Clinton seeks to empower them, Obama, to subjugate them.

@against: You are a die-hard Obama supporter, I don't think you are looking at this from a Hillary supporter's point of view. There are some Democrats who are going to vote for Obama if he is the nominee. End of story.

Have you considered the outcome of the general election if Democrats in FL or MI decide to not turn out in protest? They have a legitimate reason to protest. They had no say in the nomination process. Please remember that it was the Republican run legislature that changed the date of the primaries. Dean was short-sighted in his reaction.
  • Anonymous · 1 year ago
The 'black community', the blindly loyal, monolithic Democrat voting bloc has stuck by the party like glue. When they should have stood up and spoke out against Bill Clinton, they instead voted to give him mass absolution.

Superdelegates know blacks will always remain true to the Dems. Afterall, who do you think has brainwashed you all into NEVER voting for the evil, racist Republicans?

I believe this poll, and more importantly, so will superdelegates.
  • cm · 1 year ago
I'm surprised the number isn't higher than 28%. Look at the way Bill Clinton frames it - "they think they're better than you!", "they're trying to fool you!", "it would be a tragedy if Hillary won this during the day, and they took it away from her at the caucus!". He riles them up and tries to blame FL and MI on Obama as if he had anything to do with stripping them of delegates - which by the way were the rules that everyone agreed to when this started. But now that she's behind, she's waxing poetic about voters rights. Obama has no obligation to agree to a change in rules just because the opponent is losing.

I don't care if Hillary stays in it until the end - that's her right. But she can't seem to do it without the gutter tactics - that's what bothers me.

    obam's a muslim? well, great!!!

so he does recognise jesus as a prophet. the jews don't do that much. and the jewish state of israel has long been the stauchest ally of the usa.

he is a muslim? well, wonderful!! that means he accepts anybody into his religion, just like the christians do, but unlike the jews, who go by the bloodline of their mothers, and the jewish state of israel is the centerpiece of the united state's middle east policy, if not beyond.

obama's a muslim? well great! then he upholds the ideal of brotherhood, just like the christians do, as opposed to the jews, for whom brotherhood is never understood terms of faith, but always literal, one's real brother. nobody can be the brother of a jew if he was not born a jew.

and the jewish state of israel will never consent to have a majority of muslims or christians, or both, for it would cease to exist.

i think by now it has become clear what a nonsense the matter of religion is in this context.

a president has to be there for the people, not for any people's religion. you can get back as far as lincoln's gettysburg address, and what you find there is the will to create a government of the people, by the people, for the people.

lincoln called it the "new birth of freedom".

so let not religion ruin your freedom. you can have any faith you want, you'll always be an american first, and free above all.

I'm kind of glad Hillary is trying to revive the Wright controversy now because most people can see why she's doing it and it makes her campaign look desperate. But also because there are people coming out now to defend Wright and put his story out there and give some context.

    From Martin Marty:

His critics call Wright anti-American. Critics of his critics charge that the clips we hear and see have been taken out of context. But it is not the context of particular sermons that the public needs, as that of Trinity church, and, above all, its pastor.

In the early 1960s, at a time when many young people were being radicalized by the Vietnam War, Wright left college and volunteered to join the United States Marine Corps. After three years as a marine, he chose to serve three more as a naval medical technician, during which time he received several White House commendations. He came to Chicago to study not long after Martin Luther King Jr.'s murder in 1968, the U.S. bombing campaign in Cambodia in 1969, and the shooting of students at Kent State University in 1970.

    ...

I've been too impressed by the way Wright preaches the Christian Gospel to break with him. Those who were part of his ministry for years — school superintendents, nurses, legislators, teachers, laborers, the unemployed, the previously shunned and shamed, the anxious — are not going to turn their backs on their pastor and prophet.

Regardless of who you think I support die-hardedly. The facts are just that. I never said all Hillary supporters would vote for BO so why are you "chastizing" me on that? I don't care. END OF STORY. There are racists who won't vote for BO and there are sexists who won't vote for HRC. And????

It is not my fault nor the candidates' fault if MI and FL protest. Indeed it is a sad situation. In my opinion they should protest the elected officials - BOTH Democrats and Republicans who disenfranchised them. WE live in a world where you must follow rules. It's that simple! If my boss tells me ahead of time that I have to do (or not do) something or I will be fired, how in the heck can I come back complaining (after breaking the rules KNOWING IN ADVANCE the consequences)that I can't feed my family - please give me another chance. Either I follow the rules or I can be assured they will let me go! It doesn't work like that. If they hold re-votes it will change the trajectory of the race, which in my opinion will help Obama b/c he will have more time to campaign and he shows that when he has more time he usually makes the win. SO, if my opinion was about doing ANYTHING (as HRC) to win I would be more apt to agree to a re-vote but we are talking about GROWN people who can't just decide they will change the rules in the middle of the game! It should NOT happen no matter who it benefits! Clinton has you brainwashed if you believe it is BO's fault as they BOTH signed a pledge agreeing to this and the respectable candidates (Edwards and Obama) removed their names from an invalid primary. In fact, many FL and MI voters do not believe they should be allowed to vote again. Some even stated that they voted Republican when their candidate (Edwards or Obama) was not on the ballot in MI~! Many stayed at home b/c they were informed IN ADVANCE that the DEMOCRATIC PARTY rules must be followed NOT BO's rules! STICK TO THE FACTS!
  • Anonymous · 1 year ago
@against: Obama's name was on the ballot in FL and he aired 6 ads. Hillary attended a fundraiser after receiving permission from the DNC. Obama decided to have his name removed from the MI ballot, if he left it there would be no need of a re-vote (Was he being a "good candidate", short-sighted or pessimistic? I don't). All I know if he had stayed on the ballot, all the delegates could have been counted.
  • Against Race Politics · 1 year ago
I NEVER said he wasn't on FL's ballot - only MI where I repeat that both DECENT candidates (Obama AND Edwards) had their names removed in order to comply with the DNC. You sure are going out of your way to argue irrelevant points to me or insinuate that I am saying things I did not say. What is your point about the FL ads? They BOTH agreed neither primary would count. He and Edwards did NOT leave there name on the ballot in MI so what is your point. His name was on the FL ballot but it does NOT count either. So obviously you are saying FL should count although some didn't vote after being informed their votes would NOT count. Rules are made to be broken, huh? I am gonna say this one last time. BOTH CANDIDATES AGREED THE VOTES WOULD NOT COUNT and they don't!

Again, if you are racist then be up front enough to admit it. I would at least be able to respect that. Let's have a discussion about the REAL problem! Oh but the real problem is that Obama single handedly disenfranchised MI and FL voters. OK! LOL!
  • cm · 1 year ago
@ Anon: All I know if he had stayed on the ballot, all the delegates could have been counted.

No, those delegates were stripped regardless of whether his name was on or off the ballot. Also, I don't think the argument for FL is any more compelling because his name was left on - btw, under state law, they could not take their names off the FL ballot - or because the FL leg. is republican controlled or whatever. It was a democrat who initiated the line jumping and I believe a unanimous vote by the legislature to set the date.

What it boils down to is that EVERYONE knew and agreed to the rules before the game started - FL & MI will not count - and Hillary is doing her darndest to change the rules because she is losing. That's what it is. Just admit it. Yes, the DNC was being stupid; yes I feel bad for the voters of MI & FL (a lot of whom I'm sure had no frickin clue that it wouldn't count). The time for all this concern about disenfranchisement was BEFORE the primaries started not when it looks like you will lose.

Also, about airing those national ads on CNN and MSNBC: They were told they could not carve out Florida out of the national ad buy, so the Obama campaign got permission from the SC dem chair. The pledge to not campaign was a pledge to benefit the earlier states - IA, NH, NV & SC. And since SC had not had it's primary when the Obama camp wanted to run the national cable ads, it was the only early state that would have been affected.
  • Against Race Politics · 1 year ago
    CM,

If Anon is intelligent then surely this is not too hard to understand and obviously there is another problem. Maybe it's the do- anything -it- takes -to- win HRC mentality!

Again, it is sad that this happened but going forward what is to stop this from happening again if they already know they don't have to follow the rules?????
  • Anonymous · 1 year ago
The rules say the superdelegates get to make the final call on the nominee.

The Democrat party is anything but democratic.
