Don't get me wrong, I've seen them do some valuable programming when it comes to matters of safe sex, gay rights, etc.

But they've never fully grasped the subject of race relations in my opinion. Like I said, they have a weird love/hate relationship with assertive black people (black men in particular).

That's why I joked around with the Chappelle skit and the Real World. MTV's progressive enough to put a black person in the house . . . but we all know the black guy never lasts a full season (lol).

"Wow, Kevin's so exotic, but I just don't feel safe with him in the house." LOL!

Let's hope they don't take the same approach to the Obamas.

Re: MTV’s Conservative Debut

Ah D, don't underestimate some of these people. I really don't know, that's just a guess.

You might want to email the JJP team about that. I don't have anything to do with advertising, but you could probably get an answer from someone else.

Re: MTV’s Conservative Debut

I see what you guys are saying. I doubt the McCain campaign or RNC would spend a lot of money. But I still wouldn't be surprised if a third party like the National Black Republicans Assoc. placed an ad or two.

I don't think conservatives see a lot of votes in the black community. But there are other uses for political ads.

What if the goal isn't to get votes, but rather to suppress the black vote? If you've got the money, why not give it a shot?

Remember, Obama's new electoral map depends heavily on the strength of black and youth voter turnout. The goal wouldn't be to raise McCain's numbers so much as it would be to lower Obama's numbers.

If that fails, a group could try to hit Obama from the left. There is an "Obama's not black enough" crowd that might be susceptible to a GOP-created black litmus test . . . once again, the point would be to suppress the black vote rather than increase the McCain vote.

Again, I'm not saying these groups don't have a right to do this. I'm just saying Democrats should be prepared for things like this. It's politics . . . nothing's really off the table. Especially if a campaign starts to get desperate.

Re: MTV’s Conservative Debut

And since we are on the topic, did other posters realize that an Anti-Obama documentary is sponsoring this site, or was that just me? I haven't watched BET in years, and I meet few people who still do on a regular basis. I think that anybody has a right to put whatever kind of ad they want on whatever channel that they want, but putting it on BET reveals lack of common sense if nothing else.

All Black people do not support Obama, but there are more effective ways to get the message out in other mediums. Besides, BET is already struggling with advertisers because their viewership is so low. Its basically like flushing your money down the drain.

Re: MTV’s Conservative Debut

Viacom's head honcho is Summer Redstone not Rupert Murdoch. He had that very public beef with Tom Cruise. Remember it was Billy Jeff that made it possible for the large conglomerates to snap up as many media companies as they want, coupled with a useless FCC. Murdoch's Fixed Noise may lead the conservative [idiotic] path but Viacom, Disney, et al a certainly lock-step with them. I think people would falsely assume MTV would be more liberal but a more thorough inspection would show these media companies are all in agreement about promoting a very narrow viewpoint.

Re: MTV’s Conservative Debut

You think there'd be a loss of viewership-or (better question) a loss of viewership that's big enough to matter?

I gave up on BET a long, long time ago, but I'm gonna stereotype and say that there's probably three real groups of people who still watch it: kids, young adults, and the Sunday church crowd.

Of those three groups, the kids won't get it, the young adults will say "WTF?," and the Sunday church crowd probably would never see it.

At the end of the day, is it even effective?

Re: MTV’s Conservative Debut

I don't know, D. Even though Bobcat Bob Johnson doesn't own BET, Viacom does, and it wouldn't not be beyond the stretch of the imagination to see an anti-Obama ad anytime soon. What they won't expect is loss of viewership if someone's stupid enough to put one on.

After all, the New Yorker was supposed to be pro-Obama and they put that "satirical" cover on last month's issue. They're still whining about the backlash that caused, even when they tried to explain it was satire and didn't do a very good job of explaining it.

Re: MTV’s Conservative Debut

I'm not even sure if he's that brave....or stupid.

Re: MTV’s Conservative Debut

"Besides, the fool that puts an anti-Obama ad on BET or TVOne will immediately be picketed and called a racist by Color of Change."

Bob Johnson, come on down!

Re: MTV’s Conservative Debut

Personally, I’m just bracing myself for the first time I see an anti-Obama ad on BET...

Bet you'd see an anti-McCain one there first...assuming that one hasn't aired there already.

Besides, the fool that puts an anti-Obama ad on BET or TVOne will immediately be picketed and called a racist by Color of Change.

There's some stupid people in this world, but I'm not sure anyone's that stupid. Murdoch must own them; hence the reich-wing slant.

Is there no media outlet Jabba The Hut does own? He has that warmongering slant with every media outlet globally that he owns. Even tried with the BBC, but the Brits weren't having it.
