Mel Watt's blather is instructive. They are utterly out of touch, and of course depend on the laziness or snow jobs on regular voters. Al Wynn backed the banks and the surprisingly huge debt-purchasing/collection agency lobby in the bankruptcy bill deliberations. Of course the rest of the CBC and quite a few pastors backed this. Bizarre.

The problem is there are not enough Kevin Powells and Donna Edwards'. It cost $$$ to run against an incumbent, and face it, Barack needs these assholes on a symbolic level/unity at least. Can't ignore them--too much of a loose end. Of course, he should go Joe Stalin on them after he wins (if he wins).

I repeat this statement from a previous comment (it seemed to get lost in all the vitriol over Hillary's lunacy, Fr. Phleger, etc.) earlier. Fools like Mel need to think this over.

"Amid all the rancor and pseudo-issues...are we forgetting that history is being made now? I know that sounds trite...and I also know that white folks in various newsrooms or in Peoria don't want to publicly acknowledge it (nor do folk who depend on Podunk or the burbs ofr ratings, etc.) but this is one for the history books. Clyburn doesn't need to talk about the Civil Rights movement. That's all bullshit and ephemeral when compared to the centuries coming before it, and dream planted with the tears of a couple of folk off-loaded by the Portuguese on a frosty morning, at Jamestown Va. Yeah, there were hundreds, thousands dumped by then in the Caribbean, in Brazil. But these few were the first. if you want to know why I support Obama despite my differences on policy, apporach, tenor, you need not go any deeper than those tears in the dirt..."

PS: put Maxine on the list. She's a shrieking do-nothing diva and we can't afford her anymore. It's all got to be about roll up your sleeve, no chiefs just Indians work...

Stephanie Tubbs-Jones...has got to go, yes. More than any of the others, she deserves to be made a real example of.

He better NOT let her handle him.

Ok, I KNEW this beyotch was pulling a stunt tonight. I knew should would not be uttering words "concede" or "suspension of campaign".

These people need to be evaluated by a mental health professional. I am sorry, this is not tenacity, resilience. More like delusional.

She is not making "any decisions tonight". I know most of this is political posturing for her own agenda. How dare she rain on what should be his night? VP slot, in the words of our girl Rikyah, Hell to the Naw
  • hscfree · 1 year ago
I think that it is long overdue to look at the idea of developing fresh new leadership within the African American political class. Too few of the leaders in that realm are really interested in training the burgeoning African American leaders from generations X or Y, and that has to change. The paradigm has shifted and BHO is the personified example of that. He did it right. Others need to follow his lead down the elective office hierarchy.
  • smoothie · 1 year ago
Can Jack and Jill please be the first Official pushback against the Media who is literally chomping at the bit to call Hillary the VP....
  • Anonymous · 1 year ago
It's not "closed" till Hillary says it is...and 18 million other Democrats "have her back".

Obama had better start asking her politely (very politely) what she wants.

    Otherwise...

See ya in Denver, bitches :-)

I think you need to take a second look at Danny Davis. Can't comment if he is close to the Moonies, but I know he stands for good stuff, including his recent efforts to stop efforts to gut reintegration programs for the recently incarcerated.

    Bobby Scott will be challenged.
  • BigAssBelle · 1 year ago
lots of housecleaning to do in congress and the senate. we have to get rid of the blue dog democrats so we'll have the push behind our future president to change this fucking country.

we are witnessing and living a repeat of the gilded age, the rampant financial disaster of the late '20s and '30s and we need another roosevelt to turn the economic disaster of more than 20 years of republican rule around.

i believe obama's the one. it can be done and we all have to stand strong and refuse to listen to the naysayers. it's our country. we can do anything we set our minds to (and have the voting bodies to make happen).

Bobby Scott ain't going nowhere...his district was specially gerrymandered to go from the black neighborhoods of Richmond to the black neighborhoods of Newport News. There have been very few complaints on Bobby Scott....he ain't going nowhere.

    Former resident of MO-05...

Cleaver is one of the few black Representatives in a majority-white district. He was a former mayor of Kansas City and his opponent was a rich woman who was married to a local businessman.

The likelihood of electing another African American in that district through a primary challenge is very small.
  • Dave · 1 year ago
Oh, and Artur Davis is very likely going to run for statewide office in 2010 - for Governor or Senate. So that will be an open seat.
  • heartsandflowers · 1 year ago
CPL I didn't know you were in Oakland. Lee is not my district but I've always admired her voting history and her ability to stay relevant in the Party. She was one of the only people in Congress to not authorize the war.
  • The Christian Progressive Libe · 1 year ago
HeartsAndFlowers, I was born in Houston, and raised in Oakland, before I moved to DC three years ago. I did my internship in Ron Dellums' office when Barbara Lee was his Chief of Staff; we go back a ways. So, I have my heart more in Oakland, but there's part of my heart in H-Town as well. Shocked me to the core that Sheila Jackson-Lee represents my old neighborhood and it looks like it's going to pieces, so I'm wondering just what "kind of representation" she's providing?

She has Katrina victims in her district as well, but she's not helping Maxine Waters push through legislation to help them; probably because if she does, those residents return to New Orleans and she'd be ripe for a primary challenger. Hmmmm...

As for Danny Davis, I don't discount what he's done in Congress to spearhead efforts for brothers getting out of the joint; what worries me is his Moonie ties, and the Moonies don't pony up any payola unless they're getting something in return. Davis was caught on video at a "coronation" for Sun Hyung Moon, the leader of the Moonies, held right there in the Dirksen or Russell Senate Building. Full Coronation regalia, and when asked if he was in attendance, Davis denied it, only to be confronted with a video of him carrying a red velvet pillow with a crown on it and placing it on Moon's head.

There was a lot of controversy behind that - especially trying to find out which Senator authorized the use of a Federal Building for coronation purposes, which would also be a violation of Federal law in the use of Federal property.

My point is that the CBC knows the double standards that apply to them and their peers, and they should always conduct themselves in a manner that prohibits being caught out like that. Y'all seen what happened to David Vitter with the DC Madam. She's dead; he's still in the Senate. But if that were, say, Danny Davis or any other CBC member, there would be calls for them to resign their seats.

    That's all I'm saying....
  • heartsandflowers · 1 year ago
Yeah the death of the Madam is very suspect. I wonder sometimes if Barack really knows just how dirty it is because he gives the impression that he's cleaner than a typical politician.
  • Ms.Martin · 1 year ago
Bob Johnson is asking the CBC to support Clinton as VP.
  • SquarePeg · 1 year ago
The DLC has used the CBC as an arm of its operations for years. Unfortunately, year after year, their constituents keep re-electing them not realizing that the corporations have literally bought them as if they were actually on the auction block.

There was a report out yesterday that the Black politicians who supported Hillary are begging her to talk with Obama about getting those challengers off their backs. How ironic, that they assumed by supporting Ms. Hillary against Obama they would be taken care of, yet here they sat crying for Ms. Hillary to save them to speak with the man they were trying to eliminate to save their sorry asses.

Stephanie Tubbs is scary. On MSNBC last night Chris Matthews started speaking with her before her picture was on camera and when she did appear with all her teeth and gums showing and those glasses on-- she scared me. I screamed turn it off, turn it off! I'm wrong, but that's what I did.

In the next couple of days I guess Hillary will release those house negroes so they can get on the Obama bus, hope he ain't smelling what those rats are cooking.

    Doesn't need them.
  • TruthSeeker · 1 year ago
    ms.martin,

don't you find that highly inappropriate? He's not a politician, and why are they giving him coverage? They're playing Obama like a punk...absolutely NO respect.
  • The Christian Progressive Libe · 1 year ago
The question that needs to be asked:

WHAT'S IN IT FOR BOB JOHNSON?

It's not like he has to tote Hillary's water; he can afford to blow her off now.

My guess is that he knows he will have no entre into Obama's circle, so he's going to keep himself attached to Hillary and force his way in, just like he forced those booty-shaking videos on BET in exchange for really informing the Black Community. Guess there were no dollars in keeping Black people in knowledge, versus rump-shakers that he doesn't want to come back into the Black community to explain away.

Did I miss the name of Charlie Rangle? He's got to go.
  • James · 1 year ago
Danny Davis? Not going to happen. That's the only brother that was trying to help ex-cons out with education and jobs for a long time. Even took it to Daley. What's the beef with him again?
  • The Christian Progressive Libe · 1 year ago
Danny Davis has Moonie ties. I'm well aware of what he's done and continues to do for ex-cons, but he needs to cut those Moonie ties.

As for Champagne Charlie Rangel, he was the one who put forth to Hillary to even enter politics by setting it up for her to transition to New York and run for Bobby Kennedy's Senate seat.

Both he and Chuck Schumer should get primary challengers for inflicting this woman on us all.
  • Anonymous · 1 year ago
    Christian Progressive Liberal,

I couldn't agree more with what you said about Sheila Jackson Lee. It seems all she cares about is getting publicity (she adds so many mindless amendments to bills just to get her name out and talks about EVERYTHING), ensuring more "black" hurricane names (whatever that means), and throwing fits over not getting free first-class upgrades on airlines. Yet she keeps getting re-elected. Pathetic.
  • The Christian Progressive Libe · 1 year ago
    Anon 9:11:

American Airlines is one airline she won't get upgrades anymore; the last time she flew with them, she clowned them for not upgrading her to First Class, and then, when they did upgrade her, she went ballistic cause they didn't have the meal she wanted.

She has been officially banned from flying American, and I hear Southwest is not too far behind.

At that rate, she'll have to either pay to charter a jet, or get one of those oil baron donors she has, if she doesn't want to travel on Amtrak or Greyhound to get to her district.

And yes, unfortunately, she's all about publicity-seeking, and dropping the names of bills she's signed onto as a co-sponsor. I get emails from her office all the time when the CBC Monitor Report Card gets published, asking why don't we highlight that, and I wear myself out telling them we only review how she voted, not what post office she got named after Harriet Tubman, or something like that.
