In Prince Georges County, Maryland, where I graduated from high school, 50 hours of community service was a requirement for graduation. I don't see that as an issue. I'd gladly do community service if it was going to shave a few thousand dollars off of my 35,000 dollar tuition.

His plan sounds great! It will teach people to care about their communities an d that other people might have it worse than them. Plus they are getting something out of it. Its nothing like slavery! Lots of social groups require public service. I'd rather see someone get into college because of their service rather than their ability to throw a ball!

I'm trying to define people who can "stretch" and, therefore, distort Mr. Obama's statements to tranform them into their "SICK" mentality. Back in the day, there was a song- "Rubber Band Man". For now [until I come up with a different concept], I'll call them - ta-dum - "People Who Think With RUBBER BAND BRAINS"!
A point about rubber bands is that they can reach an "elastic limit" and never return to their original shape. That's where the "RUBBER BAND BRAINS" are headed. I would love to be around when they "snap". L8R

Did anybody catch Brian Williams on MSNBC just now?

He said that McCain was scheduled to appear on all the morning shows today. How convenient. The same day the Iranians test their missiles. I guess he wanted the "presidential" foreign policy soapbox.

But he wouldn't have it alone, despite his best efforts.

When the missile test story broke, Barack's people scheduled him to appear on the morning shows at the last minute to discuss the situation and have his own presidential moment.

Meantime, Bush is in Japan and hasn't appeared on any network.

I actually watched that town hall on CNN video and the words as printed sound a lot harsher than the words he spoke. If was a humorous exchange that had the crowd laughing. It was like sharing an inside joke but the message was serious.

I'm sure he'll receive harsh words from those who believe he only lectures black people, but that girl's school in Chicago where he said the same thing (minus basketball) was predominantly white.

Sports and entertainment are considered fast tracks to stardom among the disillusioned. Barack is trying to keep it real and make sure youngsters know an education is the ticket.

I'm conservative on these issues as well.

You have to excuse Mr. Goldberg. This is a man who argued in his last book that American liberalism was an outgrowth of Soviet Communism. Goldberg ignored the fact that American liberalism preceded Soviet Communism, has outlived Soviet Communism, and throughout its history has produced such prominent anti-Communists as Harry Truman, John F. Kennedy, and Arthur Schlesinger. His argument that compelling young people to perform community service in exchange for tuition money is analogous to slavery is another example of his intellectual dishonesty. Only the most cynical would support such views and only the most stupid would actually believe them.

Let me add to my last comment that when, in the United States today, there are documented cases of actual human slavery among tomato and citric pickers in Florida, apple pickers in Washington, garment sewers in Saipan, and even welders in Oklahoma, people who argue that the 13th amendment is best used to get them out of paying their taxes don't strike me as very serious.
