Jack and Jill Politics: Ohio Debate Open Thread

  • Anonymous · 1 year ago
Bang, Obam just used the word "superior" to describe the way Hillary feels about her plan. That's what driving me crazy about HRC in regards to healthcare. I think she only wants universal healthcare if it is her plan. It's her legacy, her baby. She has been working on this for years. It's like you can't tell her NUTHIN' about healthcare. I think she is willing to sabotage universal healthcare if she is not the nominee (until she can be).

I think everyone caught that line. Why is she referencing a comedy spoof in a serious presidential debate?
  • Phillip M. Bailey · 1 year ago
Barack made it plain as Malcolm used to say on the question of foreign policy.

On Iraq, "Who drove the bus into the ditch? Not cerebral or academic, he said it in words everyone can understand. She's an enabler.

"Having a debate with John McCain where your positions were similar until you ran for President..."

    Church!

I'm taking bets on Hillary choking either Tim or Barack before the hour is up. She looks like she is about to explode!

I just does not rile up her white women base. You know, "she is being picked on". I can't beleive she referenced SNL. Ha.
  • Phillip M. Bailey · 1 year ago
If you have TiVo, rewind to Hillary's SNL comment. Hear the faint hisses?

Hillary's taking cues from comedian Tina Fey, "Bitch is the new black". She came out in full Queen B mode tonight. She dissed Tim Russert and Brian Williams.

Barack, just play it cool. Answer decisively, stick and move. When she gets ugly, do like my hometown legend, Muhammad Ali, rope-a-dope.
  • Anonymous · 1 year ago
Hillary is really playing herself. It's sad to watch, really.

    but funny, lol.
  • Anonymous · 1 year ago
I hate the way she talks. That mid-western accent, white teacher voice is killing me.

And, notice how she makes (what she thinks is) a joke, pauses for laughter, and no one laughs?

"I think everyone caught that line. Why is she referencing a comedy spoof in a serious presidential debate?"

-She's doing it because she's desperate.

She's gonna cry!! He hit her with the whole you can't pick and chose what she wants to take credit for when it come's to the 8 years of her husband's administration.

I must say that MSNBC does a better job at cornering the candidates than CNN. They are pretty serious...I like it!!

Tim gives Obama opportunities to give the kind of straight answers that Tim actually likes.

Now Ms. Ann, on the other hands, HATES Tim Russert! She wanted to slap him for that tax return question.

The smile and the cackling laugh are killin' me! Plus, she thinks staring at him is going fluster him.

She is so pissed at that uppity, Negro, she just can not contain her hatred!
  • Anonymous · 1 year ago
    OMG! Barack rocks. Seriously.

I love how he can alternate between intellectual and then break it down for the common man. What was that comment, "drive the bus into the ditch". The audience really loved that one. I think middle America definitely understands that one too.
  • Phillip M. Bailey · 1 year ago
    The Farrakhan Factor:

    Reject/Denounce, unguard!

Hillary is jumping on every point just to get a rise about of Barack. He's playing this so cool. I don't know if any of you have read the literature on the cool pose in black males as a negative trait, but Barack is employing that strategy to empower him against her cynical attacks.
  • Anonymous · 1 year ago
"I don't know if any of you have read the literature on the cool pose in black males as a negative trait..."

I noticed, and I loved him for it. Michelle better be glad I'm happy with my man!

  • Caged Lion · 1 year ago
That "reject/denounce" comment was an instant classic.

However, I wonder about white voters who have just been introduced to Obama's church through the lens of that question.
  • Anonymous · 1 year ago
Yup, he has denounced anti-semitism!! and Hillary is trying to cash in!! I like how she runs into black churchs to pander for votes but loves when Obama is being cornered for his membership in a black church.

My jewish pro-hillary professor who compared Obama to Hitler will probably jump all over this tommorow.

They have been carrying on with this for a long, long time and Louis coming out praising Obama didnt help.

    Thanx Tim

    SHE CANNOT SAY IT!

Re; Trinity United, most white folks just don't understand black churches. I'm not trying to worry about what they think.

Pastor Jeremiah Wright is a dynamic speaker, I've been listening to him on the radio for years!! He speaks truth to power.

    Obama wins.
  • Ms. Ki · 1 year ago
@Admiral - not a glove on Obama at all. He ducked all those punches and Chris Matthews just spun it as he doesn't know how to respond with a catchy counter statement like Clinton. No, he's rising above all the "silliness" of the campaign.
  • Rhonda · 1 year ago
I think Obama did a fine job! He asserted himself. People claim that Obama can't answer tough questions or never get tough questions..need to get lost!! (and yes, hillary, I know you think your cute with the little pillow comment from SNL...get a life)

RE:I'm pretty familar with Mr. Wright myself and i like what he says but in our country where white people make up 80% of a the pop. which can make or break obama, their understanding is important. We all get it, i know for a fact many whites may or may not. However I think that he did enough to deflate any confusion about it. the other issues that were debated are more important.

  • Caged Lion · 1 year ago
The racism and anti-semitism will be key in the repug strategy. "Attack your weakness": the repubs are obviously weak on issues of tolerance. They will turn this around and make blacks, and by extension Obama, look racist and intolerant.

Hill and the repubs will blow this up as much as possible
  • Caged Lion · 1 year ago
I also think it was deft of Hillary near the end of the debate to position her candidacy as the first woman president into a paradigm shift---and thus a strong force for change. That was a smart and a clearly articulated assertion.
  • rikyrah · 1 year ago
About Trinity UCC, Rev. Wright is NO Prosperity Gospel Preacher. He's an old-fashioned, fire and brimstone kind of preacher. He likes his Christianity old-fashioned - help the poor and least among us. The White folks should love that he Dr. Wright completely believes in the' stop begging the White man to do for you what you can do for yourself' mentality.

The thing that gets me is this nonsense about Trinity being full of ' radicals'. GMAFB. It's full of 'Strivers' like Barack and Michelle - the folks most connected into ' The System' in our community. The folks that conservatives would point to in order to beat up on the underclass and say , ' see, they achieve, why can't you?', but because they have some self-pride and self-respect, suddenly they are the second coming of Angela Davis and Huey P. Newton. ::::rme::::

Is anyone still watching MSM's after debate coverage? Chris Matthews just asked Jesse Jackson about Obama having to "denounce his own people or the people around him" in regards to Farrakhan. Then he went to bring up Michelle's comments about being proud. Jesse then countered with Reilly using the term "lynch" but Chris didn't want to discuss that. Unbelievable.
  • Rhonda · 1 year ago
I agree with you Rikyrah and its unfortunate. I have been familiar with that church, one of my professors attended it when she lived in Chicago and always speaks fondly of it. I love the church and its message. However many are spinning it and I am simply saying that I hope they dont and I hope people dont buy the lies. I think many Obama supporters are much, much smarter. I will leave it alone.
  • LucieLu · 1 year ago
Barack looked like a leader, Hilary looked desperate. I mean, whe she was corrected for mispronouncing the name of Putin's successor, she actually said "whatever." Apparently this debate has reduced her to a 16 year old.

Chris Matthews is unbelievable sometimes. When Jesse Jackson brought up that Barack could not talk about his race the way Hilary talks about her gender, Chris ignored that point and instead commented on how Barack being seen as "international" helps him.
  • Lolo · 1 year ago
I'm still chuckling at her "me too, me too" moment about rejecting the support of anti-semites. In New York. Oooooh, risky.

Also, the woman who asked her to help with her situation with her child? After spending three million dollars? I'm not poor or broke but uhm, I don't think that having three mill to spend on healthcare is exactly talking to the middle class, or did I miss something?

Stephanie Tubbs just said Barack "can't own Martin Luther King's Dream". I think this really confirms how many of the "established" civil rights leaders view him.

The more clips I see of this women,I start to think she may be afflicted with a mental condition. I mean this as no offense to anyone suffering from mental health issues.
  • Ms.Martin · 1 year ago
I love it. CNN Analyst and Obama supporter Jamal (shame on me I can never remember his last name) was asked about the Farrakhan question and said that he loves it how no one ever questioned when Strom Thurmond, an admitted segragationist came out and supported a candidate. He went further to say that Louis Farrakhan was a public figure and Thurmond an elected official. Silence fell over the discussion and Anderson Cooper moved on as he usually does when a point he is in opposition to is well made.

On another note, I'm through complaining about Stephanie Tubbs, Hillary can have her. I think she's actually hurting her campaign more than she is helping it. Why is she allowed to speak?
  • rikyrah · 1 year ago

I'm pissed! I can not believe that Russert asked Senator Obama about Farrakhan! Would a White (Republican) candidate have ever been asked to reject or denounce someone who had spoken positively of them? Hell, Ann Coulter, an anti-Semite, said she would campaign for Clinton. When asked, Clinton said this campaign makes strange bedfellows. It was a gotcha question to further suspicions that he is a secret Muslim.

I'm with Barack; mandatory means a determinable amount of business for someone.
  • Craig Hickman · 1 year ago
I'm sick of Hillary needing the last word on health care. It's childish to say the least. Just wanted to share a quote from a reader of Daily Dish:

You have it totally reversed on the Farrakhan question. It's not Obama's worst moment of the debate cycle. It was Clinton's. As a Jewish-American, I can't tell you how offensive I found her attempt to hijack the question and attempt to score cheap political points. If it wasn't clear before that she views my people as just another ethnic group she can pander to, it's perfectly clear now. I was sick to my stomach. "Hey look at me! I hate anti-Semites more than Obama does!" What an insulting attitude to take. Before tonight I was planning on supporting the Democratic nominee no matter what, even though I voted for Obama in my state's primary. But Hillary crossed a line today, and I can only hope she isn't nominated. Otherwise I may have to make an ugly choice in November.

That commenter hit the ball out of the park.
  • Ms.Martin · 1 year ago
Also, Hillary was truly exposed on the NAFTA position. She countered with: "I said it wasn't working for states like....." Of course, the states she said she said NAFTA wasn't working for are the ones who haven't voted yet.

Obama quicly clarified how his position on NAFTA had never changed when he was questioned about a supposed discrepancy.

I seriously believe the American public sees Hillary for the liar and would be opportunist that she truly is.

The inuendo surrounding Trinity Church has been out there for quite some time now. That's actually what they thought would put him out early. They are simply rehashing old fears that have been visited. It will be easier this time to refute.

Did anyone see where Trinity is being investigated by the IRS for supposed political activity that surrounds a speech that Obama gave. the penalty would be that they would lose their non-profit status.

Stephanie Tubbs Jones is on something! She is just embarassing. I wonder whats being put in her "malt liquor'. She is smiling like an idiot, she can't make a sentence and when she does she makes no sense. Her comment about Obama and owning King's dream tells me about how she and a lot of the black establishment look at Obama. I knew it, at least she admitted it. She continued to talk about black men for Obama and black women for Hillary, by referencing Dyson, jackson and their wives. She makes no sense.

Hillary was so open about her gender being this big plus, god forbid Obama ever did the same thing. There is an obvious double standard.

CNN looks like a joke compared to MSNBC.

    Hickman:

I purposefully wrote United Health Insurance. It is as much about forcing payment for medical services as it is making sure folks can be taken care of when they are sick. If it were Universal Health Care everyone would have it regardless of their financial status. Listen to Hillary's criticism of Obama's plan. She constantly says that if folks aren't forced to buy insurance, the rest of "us" who have purchased it will end up paying their medical bills through a secret tax.

I would really like to know more about the types of coverages that will be provided at what costs!
  • Rhonda · 1 year ago
Yea, Hillary is the Queen of cheap shots, she wont admit it until sge is bcked into a corner the way she was with NAFTA and her vote for the war of iraq.

I like Obama's church and believe in their message.I love how his pastor said that, Bill Clinton did to black people what he did to monica Lewinsky"..its so right. An old professor of mine actually attended it when she was at the University at Chicago for her masters. She would always speak fondly of it. However i know how the media loves to spin and fear monger esp when they have Farrakhan in the pciture and I hope that they dont entertain creating a non-issue. Of course, this is an old issue that is being brought up. The Rezko thing was an old and debunked issue that was brought up by Hillary's desperate behind but people entertained it for too long regardless.

I'm watching the debate again, Hillary looked kind of defeated at points. I'm studying her body language. She usually has this smirk on her face but she looks like shes about to cry.

As I am watching the debate again, Hillary is proving the fact that she is a petty and dogmatic politician. Who wants her leadership. It seems Obama was against an award that his Pastor's daughter gave to the Minister last year. This is from the Pastors bio on Wikipedia:

"In 2007, Trumpet Magazine (published and edited by Wright's daughter) presented the Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr. Trumpeter Award to Farrakhan, whom it said "truly epitomized greatness."[12] Wright is quoted in the magazine offering praise of Farrakhan "as one of the 20th and. 21st century giants of the African American religious experience" and also praised Farrakhan's "integrity and honesty."In response, Obama noted his disagreement with the decision to give the award to Farrakhan; his statement was praised by Abraham Foxman of the Anti-Defamation League."

Darrell Simmons from CNN, is a smary guy. He always says the right things. I heard him talking yesterday, its a non-issue unless people want to either spin it like they did Michelle's comment and the allegations of him being a radical muslim for the past year. Russert brought it up to close any suspicion. Now if it were Hillary trying to make a point by bringing it up then i would slap her and bar her from pandering in any black church. Both Jesse Jackson and Simmons handled it well. There are never questions or suspicion when it is the opposite way around.
  • Ronnie B · 1 year ago
First, Barack handled his business in a way befitting a chief executive. His adversary was lightweight, inartful and shrill. He needed only to remain the cool, smooth rock in the presence of her hot mess. A rather effortless yet fruitful closing to an otherwise ordinary Tuesday evening at the office.

Second, the only challenge that comes from Tuesday's debate is the Trinity UCC question. Personally, though, I don't think the GOP wants to implement a tactic of politically attacking churches. Nor do they want to open up the can of worms of segregated or homogenous churches. The so-called "party of faith" hasn't a leg to stand on in this regard. But if the question does come up, i.e., "Senator Obama, if you're truly about unity, why do you attend an 'unashamedly Black' church?". I would hope Barack's response is something like "I attended my church long before political pundits knew or cared about my church. Are you suggesting that I leave my church home only because it's politically expedient to do so?" or something to that affect.

That should put the whole church thing to rest.
  • Angela · 1 year ago
Russert was on with Matt Lauer this morning and he made a comment regarding Clinton's complaint about always getting the first question. Russert told Lauer that the question isn't the problem its the answer and that if you can't answer tough questions you can't make tough decisions. He then went onto say he had asked a couple of questions that weren't directed to either of them but Clinton jumped at the chance to give an answer.

She sounded so petty when she bought up the SNL bit.

In listening to the morning shows it seems most think the debate was a draw, that Obama did what he needed to and Clinton didn't do anything to change the dynamic.
  • ac · 1 year ago
What is with Tubbs-Jones? As a Clinton surrogate she spends as much time defending Ms Ann as she does making personal attacks on Obama. Why is that? I don't see any of the other Clinton surrogates as shrill and irrational in their denouncement of all things Obama. It got me to thinking...

Last week on the Field Negro a commentator stated they were a Washington insider and knew firsthand how many of the female CBC members had "cougar'd" up on Obama when he first hit the Washington scene only to be turned down flat. I thought it just idle gossip but now, I wonder if there isn't something to it.

Maybe I am just imagining things, but Tubbs acts as if it's less about defending Clinton as it is about throwing some venom down on Obama. Did he do something, real or imagined, to offend her personally?

Contact the DNC to let Howard Dean know that we feel that Hillary should step down in a respectful manner since she is obvously not going to win the nomination. This would be the right gesture for her political future as well as the right gesture for the Democratic Party. Just visit: 'STEP DOWN WITH GRACE' Campaign at http://www.Blacks4Barack.org....then respectfully request the DNC to ask her to step-down. The Louis Farrakhan question, which, make no mistake, wouldn't have even been asked if the media was favoring Obama, allowed Obama to talk about the historical relationship between Blacks and Jews. That's not being reported much today. I'm not surprised. But it was an answer that helped shore up support for Obama from Jewish-Americans and quell some of the concerns many had about his stance on Israel. That's a huge deal. It also made Hillary look like she was pandering to Jewish-Americans by hijacking the question , as the commenter I quoted here earlier said, to try to show that she was more against anti-Semitism than he was. It was a desperate moment and it made her look beyond petty. It also turned off many Jewish-American voters sitting on the fence. And again, Obama detonated her opportunistic attack with such cleverness he got an applause out of it.

If Clinton thinks she can actually win this election by playing the victim, more power to her. If she thinks referring to a comedy skit is good presidential campaigning, more power to her. But if she thought she was going to have it easy as a woman riding on her husband's coattails to victory, she ought not to have run in the first place. Perhaps she ought to have divorced Clinton and separated herself from him completely before running and then she might actually have a point. But she never would've been able to consider herself an incumbent candidate if she tried to run on her own because the Clinton Machine belongs to Bill, not Hillary. And that's why she refuses to release their tax returns. She's got a lot to hide. Always has; always will.

At least one of the Democratic candidates came prepared to deal with all the attacks coming his way. He'll be far better prepared to be President. Obama won the debate hands down.

""Perhaps she ought to have divorced Clinton and separated herself from him completely before running and then she might actually have a point. But she never would've been able to consider herself an incumbent candidate if she tried to run on her own because the Clinton Machine belongs to Bill, not Hillary.""

That's exactly it. She's always turned a blind eye to his philandering in exchange for what he could do for her politically. Now it's dawning on her that it was all for nothing...she sold herself out for nothing. Now, her image(illusion) has been damaged and Bill's image is toast; and, she still won't win the nomination! What did Dick Morris say..."The politics of personal destruction"?

Read the Israeli Media and see what they think about this nonsense issue. As a person of Jewish decent, I could care less what Farrakhan says.

I care more about real issues facing average Americans. The elite Beltway Press--people like Russert and Williams make $4 million a year--don't understand real issues because they don't have to face them. Consequently, real issues--like health care and NAFTA--are declared boring, and the media obsesses on the petty--from Hillary's tear to "plagiarism" to photo of Obama in a foreign country to the words of the bigot Farrakhan. It doesn't help me get health insurance, it doesn't help a kid go to college, it doesn't help the family that is a paycheck away from losing their house, it doesn't help the person who saw their job at the steel mill be sent to Juarez and the list goes on. The fact that Obama doesn't play these petty games and actually addresses the real issues facing Americans is precisely why he's winning, and precisely why he'll be the next President of the United States--much to the media's frustration...they're going to lose their tax cuts.
