Run, Condi, Run?

Eugene Robinson writes in his latest column:

Oh, please; oh, please; oh, please. I know it’s undignified to beg, but please let John McCain pick Condoleezza Rice as his running mate.

I know that this campaign has already bestowed an embarrassment of riches upon those of us who are paid to watch and listen. With its vivid, [...]SHARETHIS.addEntry({ ... Continue reading »

  • I think she's more valuable as the anti Michelle Obama (look at the clownish statements about Michelle on www.tigerhawk.blogspot.com). he doesn't have the personality for VP. Did Gore? Yes, in a way. He was a professional politician.

And guess what? Then her life becomes an open book. Then she has to explain her penchant for old brothas at the club/retired black bad boys. Or white men. Or perhaps black women a la Effie Barry and Maureen Bunyun here in DC? No way she wants that, and no way even the douchebags at Fox or the bloggers will be able to provide her cover. Plus, McCain wants his on flunkie. Why pick her? Blacks won't go for her. She has no regional tie. She will come as a the nerd sista we all know she is. hahaha
  • McCain is praying tha she does - he laying the race card
  • Probably won't happen, though you could argue that McCain is just as tied ("chained is a little strong) to Iraq as Rice is. McCain/Rice would beat Clinton, but I'm not sure if it would beat Obama.

The ultraconservative base really isn't ready to deal with supporting a viable black candidate (and "viable" exculdes Alan Keyes). It's the same reason why I don't think Michael Steele would fly.

I'd support it, if for no other reason than it might negate the race card a little. Or it could well bring out the democratic racists.....
  • Since McCain seems to usually ignore Black people, his painful pandering in Memphis notwithstanding, I see no reason why he would want a sister as his runningmate.

Eugene Robinson is too funny. He just wants drama.
  • I want her to run only to watch the "you have to vote for the woman" screechers walk back their comments when it comes to Dr. Rice.
  • Huh, I don't think I've ever heard it said that Dr. Rice is presidential material. She seems too willing to be a puppet for Bush jr. What was her position during Katrina? Who is she really..does anyone know?

I do know though, that on the surface she would be the perfect antidote to nullify the black man President threat, what is softer and less threatening than a black woman VICE President? But, if McCain dies could Condoleeza be President? I think you either have the hunger or you don't, and she has said repeatedly she has no interest. Why would people trust the abrupt about-face.
  • ..and another thing about journalists comparing real life to a reality show as if our lives are for their entertainment. Is Condoleeza the equivalent to the ex girlfriend who has a walk on appearance just to stir things up? Or does her insertion into the 08 race present a much more meaningful narrative?

The politicians who triangulate and create new realities to manipulate the people - and the media who fill their 24 hour coverage by mocking us. They better be careful, as they test the patience of the people. One day they might find themselves being dragged before the firing squad as America descends into madness.

    Word.
  • Black people have different political views as evidenced by Rice and Obama. Having both in the political race can only be positive. It should (but probably won't, see below) change the discussion from race to issues and display the diversity that can be found on both sides of the aisle. I welcome her entering the race. I have not always agreed with her but I do respect her and her accomplishments.

But first the cable news anchors and pundits will fumble on how to spin this. I gave it 4 hours after the announcement of Rice as McCain's running before the first person says "Condi isn't considered Black by most Black voters so it will not help the Republican ticket" which will lead to discussions of what it means to be Black. I can't wait to hear the Fox, CNN, MSNBC opinion on that topic. Sigh...
  • I don't see it happening. Going on the campaign trail means you open up your personal life to intense scrutiny, and Rice is very protective of her privacy. Having a bunch of journalists wonder why she isn't married is a headache she does not need.

And although she has done better as Secretary of State than she did as National Security Advisor, she is too tied to the Iraq mess. She would have to face a whole series of questions of discussions that went on behind closed doors.

If McCain is looking for a viable black running mate, look to J.C. Watts of Oklahoma. But he has been out of DC for a while.

  • Never happen.

This from a conservative white reader.
  • "Huh, I don't think I've ever heard it said that Dr. Rice is presidential material. She seems too willing to be a puppet for Bush jr. What was her position during Katrina?"

    -Seated, trying on shoes.
  • @ admiral komack

I heard that story, but couldn't find any verification it did happen. But, I don't recall any outrage from her either. I do remember her speaking strongly and angrily in favour of Bush's policies though.
  • her selection as a running mate would be viewed as the Republican version of Mondale-Ferraro and could suffer a similar disastrous result for the Republican Party. Mondale was defeated by Ronald Reagan in a landslide; he won only one state (MN), barely. My hunch is that McCain is probably testing the waters and hoping for a trifecta effect in Rice: Shore up the conservative base, get a historic candidate as well, and give African Americans a reason to vote for the Republican Party. McCain will need to capture at least 10-15 per cent of the African American vote and attract a sizeable number of Hispanics to win in November no matter what the polls show.

If McCain needs an African American, Colin Powell is the only candidate that would drastically change the dynamics of this race. Otherwise, he needs to play it safe and name someone that will deliver a state, Crist (R-FLA) or a conservative that will unify his base without alienating independent voters.
  • I wonder if picking Rice as the running mate would make the inevitable Rev Wright arguments from the Right seem less powerful?
  • Black people have different political views as evidenced by Rice and Obama. Having both in the political race can only be positive.

True, pamela. What I would expect though, is that having Rice as the VP nominee would turn into a "our negro is better'n your negro" debate. And as you said, the white guys at FOX and CNN would love to be the moderators of that.
  • Condi Rice please do not offer yourself up as a political negro puppet....again.

    Ronnie B-

I agree with you. That is exactly how they will act.

Remember Alan Keyes ran against Obama for Senate because the GOP tried to pull a "we have a black guy too" minstrel.

None of that. She said she isnt interested.

They are also yet to discuss what she had to say about race in America. They are a bunch of idiots.

Lawd, yes. I would pay good money to see the Steinems et al choke about Condi.

'What's that? You would support a woman because you're women? But just not THIS WOMAN? That sounds familiar..."
