Declare Saturday September 13 McCain/Palin Blackout Day

Let's Stop Being Played by McCain/Palin. Declare Saturday, Sept. 13 McCain/Palin Blogging Blackout Day
    http://tpmcafe.talkingpointsmemo.com/talk/2008/...
    By Joe Perez - September 12, 2008, 9:10PM
Now I feel like a fool. Read this truly must-read post by Andrew Sullivan, wherein one of his readers makes the case that the Liberal Blogosphere has been duped by the McCain campaign.

How did Rove's proteges pull off this feat? How did he replace Thoughtful Liberal Bloggers with Pod People?

We have been focusing all our energy on replying to McCain's sleaze, Palin's lies, rebuting their arguments, defending ourselves, digging up dirt, we have totally turned the Liberal Blogosphere "McCain Central". We've forgotten Obama! We're not pushing Obama's message! We're reinforcing McCain's narratives! We're helping John Sidney McCain win!

It's not enough to "Drop SARAH PALIN like a BAD HABIT!!! WE are running the McCAIN/BUSH/ROVE playbook for them!!" only to start "digging up all the dirt we can find and verify on John Sidney McCain" -- despite O¿O's good intentions, that too is still giving up a focus on driving home Obama's Story, Why We Must Have Change, Why Only Obama/Biden Can Be Trusted to Deliver That Change, What Obama Is Doing and Why It Matters, and What Biden is Doing and Why It Matters.

Can we try a full day -- say, Saturday, Sept. 12 -- where nobody at the TPM Cafe blogs about McCain or Palin or feeds on any of their narratives and frames? Let's try turning the page.

I promise not to post anything to TPM Cafe tomorrow-- not even in the comments -- that will simply focus all of its attention on What McCain is Saying, What Palin is Saying, or Why They're Wrong. Just for a day, one day at a time.

Is anyone else up for this challenge?

    And ... here's a clip from Sullivan's reader:

It also occurs to me that in a way McCain and Rove have actually simply taken over the liberal blogosphere in some way. They are being played.
Just a few examples---yesterday Obama gave a fantastic interview at the Service Forum. Did the liberal blogs even cover this? No.
He gave a great speech on the trail. Are his town halls even posted or excerpted? No.
The liberal bloggers have become McCain central. They make people click on his ads, make the world spin around him instead of focusing on our candidate and what he is trying to do. There is ZERO coverage of what Obama is actually doing every day talking tough on the issues. There is ZERO coverage of Biden (who is on the trail but the blogs don't seem to care or cover him unless he is doing what they think he should be doing. Sadly AFP did cover him this week and people seemed to be too busy saying he was not doing anything to include the link with his forceful comments against McCain. The one time the blogs linked to Biden---when the MSM tried to make a big deal out his answer to a question that made Hillary look bad and he defended her. That was it).

McCain and crew realized early this cycle that they did not have a visible internet presence. So what did they do? They took over the liberal presence, they are manipulating the leading liberal blogs , just as they manipulate the MSM. All to their own advantage. And the blogs have all fallen for this hook, line and sinker. Does no one realize this?

    They are all being played.

And Obama, god bless him, he gets it. As does his team. while everyone whines he keeps at it every day with much much class and like a laser focused on the issues. The problem is not Obama, is that no one wants to follow his lead. Instead they are following McCain-Rove and they don't even know it.

    Excerpt from article

Insulted Women Sound Off on Campaign Politics.
    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/marlene-h-phillip...

Erica, a 30-year-old high school English teacher in Colorado Springs, may have personally affected me most. Erica has never voted in a presidential election. Her reasons included relocation and college, but she also said: "It didn't seem to matter that much," "What was the point?" and, "It seemed like my vote wouldn't count." This year was shaping up to be no different: "I didn't even want to hear about the campaign, until one of my students challenged me to become more involved. Outside of class, she urged me to see that this election was going to be more important than any so far in our lifetimes, and her passion for the system made me realize just how cynical I'd become about our government.." Urged on by the example of her student, Erica started paying attention. And now? "I've become the Obama Campaign Team Leader for Colorado Springs House District 16 -- a challenging position given that House District 16 is one of the most conservative districts in the entire country!" Erica shared her opinion of John McCain: "I think he served his country in an incredibly courageous way for five years during the Vietnam War while he was held captive. Other than that, I've seen him, in his own words, describe his devotion to the Bush administration, admitting that he voted with our current president over 90% of the time -- more than most other Republicans. I, personally and professionally, cannot take even one more year of what's been happening over the last eight. My family will not be able to afford gas, groceries or even diapers if the state of the economy continues."

Erica recounted her reaction to what she called the lowpoint of the election so far, while insisting: "I'm not saying this as a Democrat or as a Republican but as an American -- that was Giuliani's speech during the Republican National Convention. It was embarrassing, disparaging, disgusting, and disrespectful to his party and his nation." But, she continued, this year something was different. It was Erica herself. "In the past I might have heard that speech and thrown in the towel, and taken his words as affirmation of my refusal to vote. This time, I'm voting to show Giuliani, McCain, Palin, the Republican Party, and my fellow Americans that my vote does count. That I am an important part of our nation and its government. That I can and I will stand up for what I believe in. And I believe that it's time for the change that Obama and so many of us have envisioned for so long. Can we make a difference? Yes. We can."

My disgust this week extends to our "friends" in the media, who put so little of the fluff they are passing off as information into context that the public is really being DISINFORMED by their efforts.

My guest blogger for today expounds on one aspect of the contest.

GUEST BLOGGER: Undecideds Aren't Looking To Get "Energized"

    EXCERPT:

Why aren't we going to lose this election?

Short answer: Because the undecideds aren't looking to get "energized".

    Long answer:

The process by which our side and their side get energized is the same: your candidate/surrogate says or does something that validates or agrees with your values; or, the other side's candidate/surrogate says or does something that dismisses or disagrees with your values.

Well done and a good message, too. God forbid that terrorists attack our country again, the attack will likely be vastly different than what 9/11 was. We need to be spending money DOMESTICALLY to usefully secure our borders, our ports, our power plants, etc. Many of these fortifications could be rolled into the public infrastructure rebuilding that we need in the first place.

    Women Against Palin

    Women Against Sarah Palin

Some quotes from the nearly 100K letters received by the latter site:
I am a fiscally conservative, socially liberal Republican. I am aghast at the choice the Republican ticket has made in Sarah Palin. I am so ashamed to be a Republican that I have re-registered as a Democrat this year because, frankly, they are more like original Republicans anyway (less government, more power to the people) and the Republicans are now about more government and less power to the people. She in no way represents an intelligent Republican woman and I don't want to be associated with Republican women if they identify with her ignorant and hypocritical platform. -Susan W., 65, Flagstaff, AZ

If John McCain really did as he claims to put "country first" he would have never selected her, someone with a very weak background in government and too many personal challenges, regardless of her gender. (Also if he put country over his partisan tactics he would not be making false claims in attack ads. I respected him once, no longer, and I find Palin to be an embarrassment.) -Tabb F., Gloucester, VA

As a nurse and happily married mother of 3 teenagers, I am aghast that the Republican Party feels they can win over the support of women to the candidacy of Sarah Palin. I absolutely believe that it is possible to have a family and a successful career, and encourage everyone to follow those two paths should they feel so inclined. However, I feel that Ms Palin is a caricature of everything I stand for. Her beliefs on the environment, foreign policy and sex education are not those of someone with a worldview, but rather of someone with a closed mind. That is the world of the 1950’s, not the world of today. Her interview with Charles Gibson reminded me of a job interview for a job you’re not really qualified for, but try to bluff your way through. Her belittling of the other candidates in the presidential race show a small minded person.
    -Annemarie H., 51, Scottsdale, AZ

You would think that women all over this country were absolutely mesmerized by Sarah Palin and totally forgetting everything they strongly believed in. While I am not convinced that everything written or said about her is true, she did answer Charlie Gibson on some specific issues. Charlie asked, "Do you believe that Roe vs Wade should be overturned?" Her definitive answer was "Yes." She further elaborated she's against a woman's right to choose even in cases of rape and incest. Secondly, she's for "VICTORY" in Iraq. I wish someone would ask her what this victory would look like, 5, 10, 15 years from now. She claims that Hillary Clinton and her have a lot in common. The fact is that everything Hillary Clinton has worked for in the past 30 years, Sarah Palin is opposed to.
Vote your with conscience, vote for the person who stands for what you believe in! -Anna C., 57, Oldsmar, FL

She did not even bother to be prepared for her first full media interview with Charlie Gibson (How embarrassing). She bobbed and weaved, avoiding any direct answers to the very direct questions she was asked (Possbily out of ignorance). Then, when the questions became just too difficult for her, she answered her interviewer with a cute smile and a wink (What political savvy). What are we to think about a Republican candidate, who when asked about a specific Bush policy on terrorism, gave an answer that clearly proved that she had no idea what Charlie Gibson was talking about? If this is what John McCain and the Republican party think the American people want and will follow, I think that they have made a very very huge mistake. -Barbara V.

As far as the economy is concerned Palin-McCain will do nothing to help the middle class. After watching Palin in the Gibson interview it is difficult for me to understand why so many people are supporting her. What is wrong with the electorate? It is hard to imagine how people could want another 4 years of the same Bush policies (and it probably will be even worse). -Ceil C, age 60, MN
She ain't selling well; McCaint seems to have defecated, then stepped in it.

If we're worried about black issues, we should be covering them as well like the new Jim Crow-like poll-tax-esque voter I.D. laws threatening to neutralize black support on a local level.

The New Gop: Destroying the Black Vote - http://www.newsone.com/article/the-new-jim-crow...
  • pjamma · 1 year ago
Help me out here. What is wrong with asking for an I.D. at a polling place? Seems like common sense so people aren't just claiming they are someone they are not.

I can see the issue of the foreclosure for people of all races because the mortgage problem affects people across all backgrounds. But the article didn't flesh out what happens if there is a foreclosure notice on your home when you go to vote. I'm assuming you still get to vote.

    Maybe I'm missing something.
  • jelana · 1 year ago
There was an article posted here about a county in Michigan which was predominantly black and if your name appeared on the foreclosure list, Repubs would not allow you to vote. This applied even if you had worked out a deal with your mortgage company and you were still living in your home. If you no longer reside in your home, you must re-register to vote. This makes sense but many people are not aware of this issue. Here in Ohio voters are being purged due to foreclosure. If you can't find the articles here, you can find them on dkos.
  • Nate_Wesley · 1 year ago
I think part of the problem lies in lazy poll workers not knowing the rules/laws. I have heard stories during the primaries of [not necessarily black] people being denied a ballot because of no picture ID. Thing is, they actually had picture ID, and were testing local acceptance of alternate forms of individual identification: bank statements, bills addressed to the individual voter, social security cards, birth certificates, etc. One such instance led to a voter being thrown out of the polling place and threatened with arrest --but smartly, the voter kept calm and called state officials to get things straightened out.

It's clear that Republicans insist upon requiring picture ID because it will affect minority and poor voters, and not some noble sense of fair elections. If it were about being noble and fair, they wouldn't be sending lawyers to challenge individuals in the first place.
  • pjamma · 1 year ago
But why would requiring a picture ID affect minority or poor voters? I don't understand. Doesn't everyone have some sort of picture ID? Why would minority or poor voters be less likely to have picture IDs?
  • Drew Ricketts · 1 year ago
I think we're right to both focus on McCain's flaws and try to direct the narrative of the compelling Obama traits. However, what compelling traits has Obama shown us lately? His high-flown rhetoric is decidedly tapering off in favor of simply connecting with more voters and doing groundwork. Unfortunately, that's not the glitzy stuff that bloggers or writers want to talk about. I was discussing with my significant other about how Obama basically has to make a splash in the press now too because that's largely what his reputation is based on at this point. It's sad that we cannot get to issues...the public won't have it (despite what Mr. Obama says in terms of thinking highly "of the American people." We should then make sensation happen by speculating about Hillary in a Cabinet role or cover all of his recent (unremarkable) events as if the Messiah has landed. Lesser of two evils approach. The other side does this to a tee.

thought this might get more traction in this thread:

i've recently found out to my surprise that my immediate family members are all strongly ANTI-obama. they won't vote for mccain but they are not going to vote for obama. they either are going to write someone in or vote for a third party candidate. here's what i learned in a nutshell:

dad: an admitted clintonite (Bill, mostly) HATES obama and has been closely following him for the last 18 months of the campaign and has actually read the audacity of hope. dad feels that obama is inexperienced, has no substance and lacks character, morals and values. he also says, according to my sister, that obama is "evil." in the same way that bush is evil. dad also believes that obama is criminal because of the rezko thing and that he'll be indicted if he loses the election. dad also thinks that obama was behind jesse jackson jr's blistering response to his dad's "cut his nuts off" tirade. *PLEASE NOTE*... i got this from my sister who says that my dad gave a lot more detail about his views on obama during a discussion they had before i got into town. i didn't have the strength to have this conversation with my dad because we're dealing with a lot of family issues this weekend.

mom (and dad): barack has done everything to distance himself from black people i.e. not going to memphis for the 40th anniversary of dr king's assassination (this bugged me too), not mentioning king by name in his acceptance speech (this struck me as odd as well), not attending certain events and she mentioned something about legal immigrants that i didn't quite understand. mom also says that barack wouldn't be as popular as he is if he wasn't half white and that black people are only voting for him because he's black.

aunt: according to my mom, one of my aunts was turned off by the "groupie behaviour" displayed by barack's white supporters and says there's something not right about him.

sister: sister says that barack is too nonchalant (and perhaps arrogant) and that bill clinton did a better job of articulating obama's vision than he did at the dnc. she also says that obama says stupid stuff sometimes and contradicts himself. she's also starting to believe what my dad says about obama having no morals, character or values.

like i said it was a surprise and gave me pause. i didn't feel like arguing with any of them but it did give me food for thought, particularly on the race issue. i know obama can't be seen as the "black" candidate and there's a method/strategy in how he deals with black people and what event he chooses to participate in. however, is anyone else wondering what an obama cabinet would look like given that his top people and inner circle are predominantly white? will obama speak out about issues that impact african-americans the hardest like HIV in the black community when elected? sometimes i wonder if he really is keeping black people at arm's length. other times i think people are just being haters. i don't know. i's confused :) are my family members crazy or do they have valid points?

I think your family members have valid points, but are they pressing John McCain hard as well?

    What is John McCain's vision?

What about the groupie behavior displayed by Sarah Palin supporters?

    What about John McCain's arrogance?

Is John McCain speaking to black issues? What is John McCain going to do about HIV in the black community?

The problem I have with questioning Barack Obama on black issues is that the same people questioning Obama on black issues are NOT questioning John McCain on the same issues.

If your family is wondering the same thing about McCain and concluding that neither McCain or Obama are meeting their needs, fine.

If your family is ONLY wondering about Obama while giving McCain a pass, then they are being haters.

It's not a surprise to me. I've been engaged in HEATED conversation with my mother about Obama all year long.

One to this is, many of the Obama "haters" are hard core Clinton supporters. They believe Hillary was the better candidate, were emotionally invested in her campaign, and bought into Clinton's negative rendering of Obama.

The thing I tell my mother is: (a) get over it; Hillary lost; (b) what now? McCain voted for the Iraq War, against minimum wage hikes 19 times, against the MLK holiday...

Bottom line, it's not about Hillary, it's about John McCain. That should be the focus.

"dad feels that obama is inexperienced, has no substance and lacks character, morals and values"
    gilding the lily much?
For future reference this is where you went overboard and most dismissed you as a republican troll.

You need to admit your entire family for treatment immediately.

My parents are Republicans. My father has been a big booster of the Party for the last thirty odd years, and can't stand anybody named Clinton, but on this...on this he has just about gone under radio silence about the Republicans this year, and feels that if Obama can get this many people involved in the political process, especially black people, who weren't before, then he is a good thing.

My mother still watches FOX News, but she is proudly and officially an Obama Mama.

I don't know what part of the country you're from, or your real life alter ego is from, but in the neck of the woods I grew up in, the white man and the devil were kissing cousins whenever it came to morality.

Between the 90% of blacks who support Obama, and the 5% who are die hard Republicans, the few that are left are what the statisticians call "statistically insignificant".
