Dana Bash just said the McCain campaign internally is terrified of being connected to Bush. She said McCain didn't say Bush at the RNC but when he said 'the President' the focus group graphs for everybody went down.

Now, if you think this whole bailout fiasco is a trick to associate Dems with Bush, while McCain opposes the plan...you can see how it doesn't bode well for Dems to be seen as siding with Bush. They may oppose his bill, but they're not doing enough public relations in letting the public know. They speak almost respectfully of Bush, Bernacke and Paulson and make it look like they support them. They're not letting the public know they're fighting to make wall st. accountable. Sometimes it's more important how things look.

I was wound up tighter than guitar strings as it approached the 9p hour last night. I just kept walking back and forth in front of the television set. My mind was a maelstrom of activity. Remember to get the pronunciation of the foreign leaders names correct. Don't mix up leaders and countries. Hope your surge argument is tight, coherent 'cause ya know he's gonna try to get at you with that one. Russia/Georgia - check. What if Pakistan is unable or unwilling to go after Bin Laden if he's inside their borders? Iran. Preconditions vs. Preparation. Then I stopped in my tracks. Oh yeah, the bailout. How will your budget take into account this 700b? How can you make people know that you feel their pain without sounding like a panderer?

Yes, people, that was me at my schizo best last night. But, like an ice-cold stick of fat that's been set down in a hot pan, slowly releasing its buttery goodness, I too, slowly unwound. About 2 minutes in, I realized that I was sitting, but at the edge of the seat. How did I get here? Not sure. Doesn't matter. 10 minutes in, I was reclining. OK. Good sign? 15 minutes, my feet were curled up and I was hugging a big pillow. Yeah, everything's gonna be alright. It was as much about his cogent articulation of his positions as it was about his posture. Shoulders back. Relaxed. Head Up. Confident. Eyes Engaged. Steady. Subliminally, the message was, "Relax, y'all, I got this shit covered..."

The mission was clear: get the job done without overdoing it or look like you are trying too hard to impress. Where McBush was condescending - unwilling to acknowledge his younger foe's accomplishments, Obama was gracious - giving his opponent credit when it was due. Where McBush appeared petulant and angry - refusing to engage his opponent directly, Obama was likeable and respectful - turning to the older man and addressing him as a venerable colleague. Where McBush focused on quantity to highlight his experience - listing off his laundry list of foreign travel, Obama relied on quality to highlight his judgement - his opposition of the Iraq war etc.,

Before last night's debate performance there were those who doubted Obama's facility with the intricate machinations of foreign policy; those who misunderstood his cool in the face of obvious contempt; those who questioned his compassion for the plight of many suffering American families; those who denigrated his penchant for nuance on a variety of complex issues facing this nation. But at 10.30p, those people were silenced. He stood on equal footing with McBush on issue after issue and didn't, ummm, blink.

There are a few opportunities that I think he missed. 1) McBush loves the vets so much so that he didn't even show up to vote for the GI Bill. 2)The opportunity to really nail McBush on the surge, so that's over what do we do now? Biden tidied that up in the spin zone after the debate(btw, Biden was in fine form last night). 3)Obama shouldn't have bothered with the back-and-forth over what Kissinger said/meant or didn't. I think he should have punctuated that segment by saying something like this,"Regardless of what you think Kissinger meant, I, in the capacity of President of the United States will be willing to meet with blah, blah if it's in the best interest of the nation's security." 4)On excessive spending, whenever McBush mentions anything about bear DNA again, remind him of his running mate's seal DNA bullshit up in Alaska. 5)Pakistan as a failed state at the time of the coup, etc. (I may have more comments after re-watching this on Sunday.)

Listen, It wasn't like Obama was firing from all cylinders last night, guns ablazin'. Cruise control was more like it. And in that mode, he systematically destroyed all the caricatures of him that he was not conversant with foreign policy, which had been built up over many months. I would not want to see him all fired up. And, I suspect, that today, neither does John McBush.

    Bravo, Senator Obama.

    T.
ps. Oh, and when Miss Michelle appeared on stage, my night was complete.

..I agree with Craig, this is great!

...hehe...it's like your kids first day at preschool isn't it? I was so wound up initially, I missed most of what was said. I watched the re-runs and was surprised at how much I didn't notice the first time around.

Obama did great. Yes, there were one liners he could have given...but I'm satisfied.

The minimum he needed was to not LOSE on McCain's "turf"....mission accomplished. But, he went even further...he was likeable, clearly knowledgeable, gracious and seemed to care about America. So, he did better than the minimum!

Barack always exceeds the expectations of those who demean him; but, they never learn.
  • rikyrah · 1 year ago
I have to agree with you.

Last night was the debate concerning the ONLY area where McAncient consistently outpollls Barack.

    And what did Barack do?

He more than held his own.
    More than held his own.

Looked Presidential, while Senator Country Last looked like a petty petty man.

McCain's performance played to the GOP base.

    Barack's performance played to Independents.

  • lamh32 · 1 year ago
Here's why I think Obama won last night, despite what the Obama-haters think, I truly believe that many people WANT to like Barack Obama, the fact is that Obama consistently is viewed as a nice guy, but some undecided were still wary of Obama. Yes some of it is race, some of it class, some wonder is he "ready to lead" ya know the whole C-I-C thing. McCain may have won the debate on points, but the voters aren't scoring them on points, it's all about perceptions to non-pol voters. And I would say that on the stylistic or "perception" front, Obama won hands down. McCain just seemed too condescending and insulting towards Obama, not in a policy-oriented fasion, but on a personal level. Seriously, McCain refused to even look at Obama.

People tend to like nice guys and with the majority of the country pissed about the economy, and pissed at the Bush Administration, it's not surprising to me that people want a change, and no matter how "maviericky" McCain may be, you just don't "see" change when you look at him. He may not be perceived as the "typical" republican, but he is still the Republican, and while McCain's campaign tactics can guide the media narrative, it don't change the fact that a majority of the country want the Repubs out of power

I'm so proud of Barack! Why did it seem to get lost in the mix that Ole Miss was forcibly integrated less than 50 years ago. I was overcome at the beginning of the debate. It was just such a momentous, historic, iconic image. Go Barack!

The one thing that is still puzzling me about the debate that I haven't seen any blog or media discuss is McCain's puzzling reference to Madeline Albright. When they were discussing diplomacy and meeting without pre-conditions, Obama said something about Bush's refeusal to speak with teh Axis of Evil. McCain then responded with a denial that the Bush admin doesn't do diplomacy and pointed out the meeting with North Korea. He then referenced Secretary of State Madeline Albright meeting with North Korea.

Now I know Madeline Albright was once Secretary of State, under Clinton , and did meet with North Korea. But in the context of what was being said shouldn't he be referring to Sec. of State RICE and her meeting with North Korea? What does Clinton's Secretary of State have to do with redeeming the Bush policy of the silent treatment?

Did anyone else catch this or was it just me?
  • Val · 1 year ago
then wasn't it funny when Madeline Albright posted a blog on Huffpo last night basically stating Obama passed the commander in chief test.
  • CraigHickman · 1 year ago
What do you think the intent was?
  • bajanlady · 1 year ago
I'm not sure it was intentionally. He was recalling so much of the past that I wonder if he just slipped a bit. I was waiting for someone to pounce on it as a senior moment and when they didn't I wondered if I was having the senior moment - lol!
I think maybe he just slipped, when you are speaking extemporaneously like that sometimes you have a little slippage. I just thought it was one of the more obvious errors I had heard. You know, aside from the outright lies and misrepresentations of Obama's positions.

He's going to get her a tan, dye her hair black and get it kinked up into a natural.

Then, he'll try to pass her off as a sista - but we remember he claimed his own grandmother was a white woman willingly passing for Black during Jim Crow days. We all know damned well if anyone was light enough to pass for white, they usually did and got the hell out of there, save for those of conscious who couldn't do it for selling out their own souls.

Harold Ford, Jr., has no SOUL. His actions, past, present and future, demonstrates that sad fact.

Not sure if this link has been dropped yet or not. FiveThirtyEight.com has a good writ up on the debate.

    Why Voters Thought Obama Won
    http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/2008/09/why-vote...

A brief portion of what was written:

TPM has the internals of the CNN poll of debate-watchers, which had Obama winning overall by a margin of 51-38. The poll suggests that Obama is opening up a gap on connectedness, while closing a gap on readiness.

Specifically, by a 62-32 margin, voters thought that Obama was “more in touch with the needs and problems of people like you”. This is a gap that has no doubt grown because of the financial crisis of recent days. But it also grew because Obama was actually speaking to middle class voters. Per the transcript, McCain never once mentioned the phrase “middle class” (Obama did so three times). And Obama’s eye contact was directly with the camera, i.e. the voters at home. McCain seemed to be speaking literally to the people in the room in Mississippi, but figuratively to the punditry. It is no surprise that a small majority of pundits seemed to have thought that McCain won, even when the polls indicated otherwise; the pundits were his target audience.

Something as simple as Obama mentioning that he’ll cut taxes for “95 percent of working families” is worth, I would guess, a point or so in the national polls. Obama had not been speaking enough about his middle class tax cut; there was some untapped potential there, and Obama may have gotten the message to sink in tonight

Fact Check: Does McCain almost always agree with Bush?

    YES!

According to an analysis by Congressional Quarterly, McCain has voted for bills favored by President Bush 90 percent of the time. The nonpartisan publication, which has analyzed voting by members of Congress since 1953, said the report took into account all legislation that Bush had taken a clear position on. It spans from the beginning of Bush's term to Congress's recess in August.

I posted this in an older thread a little while ago but I'm liking my theory so posting here...

Remember the whole "New Coke" campaign? Years ago Coke replaced their traditional recipe with a new version, spending tons of money on the marketing of the product. By the time it was on shelves everyone was excited about it. Turns out it wasn't very good. The world wanted the old Coke back so it was repackaged as Coke Classic and launched with amazing results.

Maybe that's the strategy here. Introduce Palin as the new flavor, packaged nicely and surrounded by a lot of excitement . When she fails miserably it will have conservatives begging for a good old fashioned Republican like Romney or Huckabee. They then dump her, add one of them to the ticket and people come out in droves to support the decision.

To this day the New Coke strategy is seen a big success as it renewed interest in Coke Classic. I wonder if the McCain camp is smart enough to copy this strategy. If they are then this could be a huge political coop.
  • Anovelista · 1 year ago
Nope. They're in too deep now.

I don't think Palin will drop out of the race. She'll just keep hiding until the night of Nov. 4 when she is standing next to McCain as he gives his concession speech dripping with contempt and anger.

With all of the scandals (and backlash) brewing back in Alaska, it will be really interesting to see where her political career goes since most intellectually-honest Republicans are actually embarrassed for her now. Even the NRO folks are against her.

McCain is stuck with Palin unless he can find another overly ambitious but extremely stupid pawn like Palin.

Most smart Republicans would stay far, far away from McCain lest they be tainted by the stench of LOSER. They are busy licking their chops for 2012.

If Palin cuts and runs back to Alaska, her political career is over.

If McCain dumps her, he acknowledges that he has a LOSER campaign.

If McCain dumps Palin at this point, he might as well step down himself.
  • Anovelista · 1 year ago
They are busy licking their chops for 2012.

That's what I think. Most Republicans with an ounce of sense are just biding their time and not even playing along with this charade. This is the first election that has really been affected by the "You Tube generation" and a sensible GOP candidate doesn't want too much, if any, public record of supporting Palin.

I've already said if McCain forces Palin to step down, or suspends his campaign, you might as well award the election to Obama, by default of John McCain.

I don't know. They say Huck won something like 30 to 40% of the black vote in his gubernatorial bid?!?!? Meaning he actually talked to black folks.

I also think he is less hateful. Plus, he will throw in some bible verses which will feed right in to the "Evangelical" Christian demographic.

I will tell you he was hating on McCain saying the campaign suspension was a mistake and that it would be a mistake for him to miss the debate. He definitely was not on the Republican message.

Anyway if only in style he is pretty different from Hannity and O'Reilly. Which may be prove ineffective since that is not the traditional succesful Fox model.

    Just my 2 cents...

Huck's sincere in his Christian beliefs - which is why Black folk in Arkansas voted for him. He knows that most Blacks are Christians, and he couldn't very well ignore them.

McCain Camp Realizes Palin Is Clueless

The McCain campaign, just like Dorothy and her friends in The Wizard of Oz, has now realized that the giant, intimidating glowing head they believed to be “The Great and Powerful Palin”, is actually the little pudgy man standing behind the curtain, pulling all those levers. Hey….that guy kind of looks like Karl Rove!

Schultz went on to say this morning on air, that Palin’s performance in the mock debate was SO bad, they stopped it right in the middle and didn’t even bother to go on.

The Smirk: Could McCain's Facial Gestures Define Debate?

As the spin of Friday night's debate settled in and both sides staked a claim to victory, one media narrative began to take hold: while Obama may have been over-complimentary of McCain, the GOP nominee was grumpy, mean, and downright contemptuous of Obama, much to his detriment.

A clip circulated by Democrats showed the McCain demonstrating all of those traits: smirking when Obama gave his answers, eyes blinking, unwilling to even look at his opponent.

Meanwhile, Senator McCain spent so much time attacking his opponent, he neglected to show how a McCain-Palin administration would differ from Bush-Cheney. McCain's Reckless Response to Russia

In response to the Russia crisis McCain was seen widely as reckless in his condemnation of Russia. Kissinger said last week that "We have to face the fact that the first shot in Georgia was fired on the Georgian side." The funny thing in McCain's Russia answer is that he demonstrated the very reckless behavior that people have accused him of. He recited his over-used "KGB" line that when he looks into Putin's soul he sees the letters K-G-B. Clever line that completely screws us with any future relationship with Russia. Which hey, three Republican Secretaries of State (Kissinger, Powell, and Baker) say is incredibly important and not worth sacrificing for a border conflict in the Caucuses. McCain's priorities are completely off base and his over-the-top rhetoric which was on display only makes the possibility of a new Cold War all the more likely. THERE IS MUCH MORE!

    Expectations.

Mark my word; the networks have lowered expectations for McCain/Palin considerably. It's perhaps the only reason that last night's debate is being called a "draw" (even a win by McCain in some quarters).

Someone who's been in the Senate for 25+ years, ought to have the highest expectations imaginable. So let's be sure and remind our friends in the media, the next time they start taking potshots at Barack for not delivering the "knockout" blow at every debate.

ABC News Executives 'Aggravated' By Letterman's Use of Internal News Feed

David Letterman vaulted himself into the headlines this week by mocking John McCain for canceling an appearance on his show only to show up on the CBS "Evening News" with Katie Couric. WHAT THE PUCK!

"Palin entered the bar after the press pool was pre-positioned in the rear of the venue. Donning a red Phillies jacket that was purchased for her earlier in the day, Palin came in to a loud roar, and the bar quickly descended into a mob scene. She was dressed casually, wearing jeans, a brown leather belt with a leopard-print buckle, and a white t-shirt underneath the Phillies jacket that read "SARAHCUDA

and another part was pretty interesting; but no mention of TODD. Is there trouble because of the Enquirer article?

About 300 protesters had gathered outside the event, loudly chanting "Obama! Obama!" Some set off flares. Your pooler has covered Palin since Aug. 29th, and this was one of the largest, rowdiest group of protesters I have seen so far.

Some of the protester signs included:

"Hey Hockey Mom -- keep the puck out of PA"

The criminals staged this event to make it appear as though Obama supporters would heckle Sarah at a Philly pub.

    Part of the steal strategy.

Obama supporters would have been watching the debate, not heckling Sarah Palin outside some pub in ethnic white Philly.

    Part of the steal strategy.

So the media will start painting Obama supporters as rabid and disrespectful to Palin in ethnic white Philly.

    Part of the steal strategy.

McCain spoke directly to Irish immigrants in PA, presented himself as a KKK rally leader and fired up his bigot base.

    Part of the steal strategy.

Me, too, CPL. I'm voting for that First Family as new Americana. I get the chill when I see the world papers having to pay attention to a black family on the front pages. It stunts a lot of their preconceptions on black humanity. I'm talking particularly about the so-called developed world. We underestimate their state of mind with respect to deep-seated pigmentocracy that still thrives.

Once, in a graduate classroom in Spain, my professor said, without racist intent, "black people are like crocodiles in the zoo. They've been fed free so long that they don't know how to work." I was the only black, only American in the room ...He was shocked to learn in that same class that most of the "crocodiles" in my country weren't black. Barack/Michelle is a fundamental part of the reeducation of the world's educated folk.

For different reasons in media and personal choice, most famous black figures don't show up as black couple, black family. I'm not anti-marrywhoyouwanna (ain't my bus. who you marry), but when black on black love happens, I am distinctly glad to see it taking world stage. Our kids will be better for that.
  • Bandbabe · 1 year ago
Wow. That sounds like a horrible experience! I don't know how I would react if I was in your shoes. However, it sounds like you handled the situation well.

Blatant racism/ignorance is stunning. The shock that the mind goes through to process people actually believe such backwards views. One of the few times in my life that I have confronted overt racism, is when my family with to a diner at the NJ shore to eat breakfast. I was about 9. We waited for about 20 minutes to be served. Groups that had come in behind us had their orders taken, including a group of 5 whites and and african american friend. Finally we got that we weren't being served because we were a black family. It's gives me a sinking feeling in stomach just remembering it.

Bigotry has no rationale. When it's out of the open it's hard to deal with. When it's just under the surface, it's harder to combat. But no matter what, we can afford to drop our vigilance.

Obama campaign calls Palin “a terrific debater”

Obama campaign manager David Plouffe told reporters Saturday that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, the Republican vice presidential nominee, is “a terrific debater” who could give Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Joe Biden (D-Del.) a run for his money when they meet Thursday.

“We’ve looked at tapes of Gov. Palin’s debates, and she’s a terrific debater,” Plouffe told reporters on a conference call. “She has performed very, very well. She’s obviously a skilled speaker. We expect she’ll give a great performance next Thursday.

As I've said before, I think this whole Palin is dumb thing is to prepare for her to perform well at the debates. No one as dumb as she is playing would even consider that they could be a vice president - more tricks.
  • The_Black_Snob · 1 year ago
I actually think she is out of her league. Not dumb. Just in over her head because she's never had to think about national or international issues before. All she has are the basic talking points.

Truth is, if she was brilliant the McCain campaign wouldn't be hiding her. They'd have her on everything from Larry King to The View to show off their prized, confident, intelligent, youthful superstar. They would NEVER want someone to come off as stupid. That doesn't help McCain. Sure they want to lower expectations, but if she was a dynamo on the national/international issues they wouldn't be hiding her from anyone. They'd play down expectations, but they would shield her when she was such a media sensation when she first came out. Strategically it's too risky to have someone garbling their talking points and looking clueless. Never mind her 101 personal problems.

McCain just saw a tempting, hot commodity. He never checked to see what was going on upstairs or in her life. She was young, Republican and attractive with ovaries. He didn't think any harder about her than he did about "suspending his campaign." McCain is a desperate man pulling tricks hoping people will fall for them ... and they are genuinely worried about the debate. And as crazy as Biden is, he's no joke. He doesn't stutter. He's concise and likable. This is deadly for them. Conservatives are turning on him for picking her with her every sparse interview that reveals how poorly she understands the issues. I'm sure she's cramming around the clock for the debate.

She's just lucky the bar is set so low it's in the basement. It'll be a win for her if she just pronounces the names right.

Sounds like they're doing some psych out here. Keep raising the expectations about Palin so the inevitable crash and burn is that much more dramatic. Me likey.
  • Teacher · 1 year ago
The hacks on morning joe said that she is going to shock all of them and give an excellent performance. The bar of expectation for her is on the floor (how low can it go?), so if she does half way better than she has been doing, they will spin it as vastly exceeding expectations. All she has to do is better than she has been doing. This is sad, pathetic & angering.

I don't know if this is true or not, but they say that on Morning Joe today they were discussing why Sen. Obama's makeup was "too dark?" Did that happen?

About the bailout thing, I confess to not being well informed on wall street, bailouts, and the like so I guess you can call me a low-info voter on that. So take what I'm about to say with a grain of salt.

Americans hate the bailout right? Well I guess it depends on who you talk to. It seems to me that if you are one of the Americans whose retirment funds are intertwined with the markets, then if the market fails, then ur retirement is essentially wiped out right? So if that's the case, I would think that retirees would be the ones who really want the bailout, to "keep the markets going?"

On the other hand, if you are not of retirment age, and you are middle class or lower, then you would probably see the bailout as a copt-out to Washington fatcats, and people who "got themselves into this mess". So you would I guess oppose the bailout.

I honestly think that the average voter is more fickle than we think. Yes they may hate the thought of a bailout, but I would place a bet (based on purely antecdotal(?)evidence) that they would hate it more if nothing is done, and more banks like WaMu go under. Because while the FDIC(?) says that the personal funds of WaMu customers are insured, how much money could the FDIC really match if there are more banks/financial institutions go belly-up. How soon after that would people be running to withdraw their funds from the respective banks (BTW, I already know of a few friends of mind who are already comtemplating taking their money from WaMu)

Anyway, I'm probably wrong about this since like McCain, I don't really understand the economy, but this is how it seems to me anyway.
  • Teacher · 1 year ago
I am still not convinced that the bailout is good or that we have been given honest, factual information about what is happening. I'm thankful for the politicians that are blocking it, regardless of their political party. I think the issue is too important to act in haste. I don't like being threatened with losing everything unless. Are the politicians going to lose everything too? I hate that the rethugs are going to get credit for "saving" our economy, but many dems are on the wrong side of this. Some CEO's need to go to jail as well.

I wonder what a Bush administration's FBI investigation will lead to. Instead of calling for a commission, McCain should have been encouraging the FBI to go all out in conducting the most extensive investigation they can, overtime a plenty, to determine if there was any criminal wrongdoing and demanding that any and everyone found to have a hand in illegal financial deals be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. That's when and where McCain should have said, "I will make them famous and you will know their names."

While I'm on what McCain 'should' do... The MSM should hold McCain accountable and judge him by whether he shows that he cares about working-class Whites. To hell with those same DOUBLE STANDARDS they (I'm talking about Chris Matthews and racist Pat Buchanan in particular) tried to apply to Obama in the primaries.

If them dumb mf's (working class Whites) can't weed through McCain's patronizing "low taxes" bs and see that those of them making $60K or less will receive 3 times the tax relief if Obama has his druthers... Well, F*CK THEM as they go out of the way to f*ck themselves.

Obama tried to lay out when he talked about all the talk politicians, Republicans and Democrats, have done while those supposedly all important White voters saw and continue to see manufacturing jobs dry up with the preferred ultra-wealthy businesses, etc. get the tax breaks they are always promised but never see.

The choice is there's and Obama can do nothing about the racist ones (yes, Chris) and, likewise, those who pretend to be undecided or fake like John SEVEN HOUSE McCain has something more in common with them and understands them better than Obama does when Obama has shown in ways McCain never has. Political pandering doesn't count.

I think the government has more vested in this bailout than they are letting up.

I don't want a bailout IF what they are telling us is the whole truth. The markets will correct themselves, they always have. I have heard time and time again that your money is only protected if its in Chase, Bank of America or Citi (time will tell). The gov doesn't care about the market failing, if they did they would not bail out certain companies (which, IMO, they have personal ties to). Yes, AIGs failure would've had a ripple effect in our economy, but creating mass panic, I do not believe, is the way to resolve our current condition.

If this problem was so easy to fix why didn't they do this a year and a half ago? Personally, I don't think we the people are getting the whole truth. maybe I am a conspiracy theorist but I like to call it how I see it. All of a sudden everyone is interested in helping the American people? Look at how high the unemployment rate has surge, look at the home foreclosure rate, look at the high bankruptcy rates. This country has always had a survival of the fittest attitude, why pretend to change now?
  • CraigHickman · 1 year ago
    We're being played.
  • The_Black_Snob · 1 year ago
The problem is they DON'T know if the bailout will work. They don't know what letting the banks fail will do. They just know both options are bad and as usual the Bush Administration waited so long, by the time they realized they needed to do something Bear Sterns collapsed and shit has been rolling downhill ever since.

If they don't do the bail out several banks are on the chopping block to fail without the help (see Washington Mutual who fell apart last week and was scooped up by Merrill Lynch) and the markets will go into disarray and credit is likely to freeze up with no one loaning anyone money for anything and the government would end up spending billions to cover the losses of US citizens in FDIC backed banks.

BUT if the go with the bailout they risk screwing up inflation. We don't actually have $700 billion. We're going to sell T-bills or whatever to foreign governments to raise the cash, then the treasury is going to start printing dollars to inject them into the market to encourage investment and spending. The only problem is there will be so many dollars out there the value of the US currency could drop dramatically and inflation could skyrocket.

Plus, the taxpayers would inherit all this worthless real estate we would have to sell for a loss.

There's just no good answers and Congress, the president and the Fed are just throwing up $700 billion and a prayer and hoping this will stop the bloodletting, then cross their fingers that inflation won't get higher. Or that more money won't be needed for the bailout (because no one knows how much these mortgage securities are worth).

So, long story short. Either way, we're all screwed.

  • MsKitty · 1 year ago
What got me was the total lack of logic in the ad. I mean if Obama agreeing with McCain's positions makes him not ready to lead, doesn't that also mean that McCain is not ready to lead because of said positions?

Analyzing stupid gives me a headache.
  • TruthSeeker · 1 year ago
    ...exactly. LOL

    They're desperate...and that scares me.
  • MsKitty · 1 year ago
I look at it this way. The more desperate the McCain crew gets, the more that desperation comes across, the more stupid they look. I mean look back at what desperation drove them to do this week. Did that benefit them in any way, did they come out ahead because of it?

That's not to say us Obama supporters shouldn't still work our asses off to get him elected, but the tide is beginning to turn. Us political junkies and blog regulars have known that McCain has got nothing for a long time, but now even the most casual observers of the election are starting to see it too. McCain came off last night as petty and small, so any lowball tactics his campaign employs at this point is just going to reinforce that perception like steel. So in a sick, rubbernecking at a car wreck way I'm looking forward to see how low they go.

That's my rambling way of saying take a few deep breaths because this homestretch is going to be a doozy, but BO and company seem to have a handle on it and they're really good at giving McCain all the rope he needs to hang himself.

Pakistan's president tells Palin she's 'gorgeous'

Palin has been in New York meeting international leaders in town this week for United Nations meetings.

On entering a room filled with several Pakistani officials Wednesday, Palin was immediately greeted by Sherry Rehman, the country's information minister.

"And how does one keep looking that good when one is that busy?" Rehman asked Palin, drawing friendly laughter from the room.

    "Oh, thank you," Palin said

Pakistan's new president, Asif Ali Zardari, entered the room seconds later. Palin rose to shake his hand, saying she was "honored" to meet him.

Zardari then called her "gorgeous" and said: "Now I know why the whole of America is crazy about you."

They're reading McCain's refusal to look at Barack as contempt. That works in Barack's favour. I still say McCain is ashamed of himself. He was acting like a man who feels very small. I don't know what it must be like to face his family after the way he's behaved.

There are many times I wish Barack would rip out McCain's throat. I see the wisdom now in him stubbornly taking the high road. Whatever happens, he will be able to go back home to his wife and kids...and face his colleagues in the Senate and hold his head high. When Sasha & Malia look at election footage when they're older, they'll be proud of their Dad. Can McCain say the same thing about his kids and grandkids? What will his grandkids feel...pity?

As Anderkoo commented....McCain's given up everything and he still may not win(paraphrasing):

Palin takes questions during cheesesteak run
    Posted: 09:19 PM ET

From CNN Political Producer Peter Hamby

Sarah Palin and her daughter Willow ordered cheesestakes in South Philadelphia Saturday.
PHILADELPHIA (CNN) – Sarah Palin partook in an established political ritual on Saturday night when she headed to Tony Luke's in south Philadelphia to order a pair of cheesesteaks with whiz and onions.

But as the kitchen sizzled and orders were barked out, Palin found herself talking politics, calling McCain's debate performance "awesome" and taking questions from a voter about the hunt for terrorists in Pakistan.

While waiting in line with her daughter Willow to place her order, a reporter asked Palin if she watched Friday's debate, and what her impressions were.

"I did, I did," she said. "McCain did awesome. He was great. He was absolutely on his game."

Palin added that she is ready to debate Joe Biden next Thursday in St. Louis.

"I am," she said. "Look forward to it. Look forward to getting to speak to Americans through that debate, absolutely."

The governor got a more serious interrogation moments later when Temple graduate student Michael Rovito approached her to inquire about Pakistan.

"How about the Pakistan situation?," asked Rovito, who said he was not a Palin supporter. "What's your thoughts about that?"

"In Pakistan?," she asked, looking surprised.

"What's going on over there, like Waziristan?"

"It's working with [Pakistani president] Zardari to make sure that we're all working together to stop the guys from coming in over the border," she told him. "And we'll go from there."

Rovito wasn't finished. "Waziristan is blowing up!," he said.

"Yeah it is," Palin said, "and the economy there is blowing up too."

"So we do cross border, like from Afghanistan to Pakistan you think?," Rovito asked.

"If that's what we have to do stop the terrorists from coming any further in, absolutely, we should," Palin responded, before moving on to greet other voters.

Palin ordered the two sandwiches, but the managers refused to let her pay, so she slipped a bill into their tip jar. She did not chow down at the restaurant, opting instead to take the food with her in the motorcade.

What Sen. McCain Doesn't Seem To Understand
    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/deanie-mills/what...
I can tell you that there are many military families who not only DON'T hero-worship John McCain, but resent deeply his seemingly endless ability to play on his war service and navy family for political purposes while, at the same time, voting against veteran's benefits time and time and time again.

As one said, "I'm glad he keeps bringing up his support for veteran's issues. That only gives us an opportunity to point out the facts of his record."

And so "GoldStarLMW" did just that. Among the statistics she posted were that, among every major veteran's group you can mention, McCain's voting record in support of their interests virtually never went above 25%, although once or twice, he went along with their needs maybe half the time.

"Militarywifeobamamama" typed, "Veteran sitting beside me says McCain supports Bush; he doesn't support veterans."

When it came to McCain's sad, sentimental, soaring story about wearing the bracelet of the war dead to remind him that he never wanted to see another soldier die in vain, "GoldStarLMW" immediately posted:

"NO soldier EVER dies in vain."

Bailout Bill Once 3 Pages Swells In Length

A week ago, it totaled just three pages — the White House’s request for $700 billion to rescue tottering financial institutions by buying their devalued mortgage-related assets.

By Monday, after an intense weekend of negotiations, the draft of the bailout legislation before Congress had swelled to 42 pages.

By Friday, after almost a week of marathon talks between Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and key lawmakers in both parties, the working version was up to 102 pages.

It likely will grow even longer as negotiators continue to tweak the proposal this weekend, adding and subtracting key elements.

Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., the House Financial Services Committee’s chairman, was optimistic Friday that a final agreement could be reached by Sunday.

HOW the heck do you think that he could READ and COMPREHEND OVER 102 pages!!??? NOT! :>)

    Wait a minute -- Wait a minute.

When Senator Obama is elected, change IS coming.

So hmmm, on that statement as its own, I have to say it:

    "I agree with John."

Because -- Change IS Coming. It is true.

John McCain is just not the one bringing it.
