I actually think she is out of her league. Not dumb. Just in over her head because she's never had to think about national or international issues before. All she has are the basic talking points.

Truth is, if she was brilliant the McCain campaign wouldn't be hiding her. They'd have her on everything from Larry King to The View to show off their prized, confident, intelligent, youthful superstar. They would NEVER want someone to come off as stupid. That doesn't help McCain. Sure they want to lower expectations, but if she was a dynamo on the national/international issues they wouldn't be hiding her from anyone. They'd play down expectations, but they would shield her when she was such a media sensation when she first came out. Strategically it's too risky to have someone garbling their talking points and looking clueless. Never mind her 101 personal problems.

McCain just saw a tempting, hot commodity. He never checked to see what was going on upstairs or in her life. She was young, Republican and attractive with ovaries. He didn't think any harder about her than he did about "suspending his campaign." McCain is a desperate man pulling tricks hoping people will fall for them ... and they are genuinely worried about the debate. And as crazy as Biden is, he's no joke. He doesn't stutter. He's concise and likable. This is deadly for them. Conservatives are turning on him for picking her with her every sparse interview that reveals how poorly she understands the issues. I'm sure she's cramming around the clock for the debate.

She's just lucky the bar is set so low it's in the basement. It'll be a win for her if she just pronounces the names right.

The problem is they DON'T know if the bailout will work. They don't know what letting the banks fail will do. They just know both options are bad and as usual the Bush Administration waited so long, by the time they realized they needed to do something Bear Sterns collapsed and shit has been rolling downhill ever since.

If they don't do the bail out several banks are on the chopping block to fail without the help (see Washington Mutual who fell apart last week and was scooped up by Merrill Lynch) and the markets will go into disarray and credit is likely to freeze up with no one loaning anyone money for anything and the government would end up spending billions to cover the losses of US citizens in FDIC backed banks.

BUT if the go with the bailout they risk screwing up inflation. We don't actually have $700 billion. We're going to sell T-bills or whatever to foreign governments to raise the cash, then the treasury is going to start printing dollars to inject them into the market to encourage investment and spending. The only problem is there will be so many dollars out there the value of the US currency could drop dramatically and inflation could skyrocket.

Plus, the taxpayers would inherit all this worthless real estate we would have to sell for a loss.

There's just no good answers and Congress, the president and the Fed are just throwing up $700 billion and a prayer and hoping this will stop the bloodletting, then cross their fingers that inflation won't get higher. Or that more money won't be needed for the bailout (because no one knows how much these mortgage securities are worth).

So, long story short. Either way, we're all screwed.

Kitty, I agree. Desperation also sunk Hillary. I really believe we have this......except for the question of the voting machines. Chris Rock made a joke about hoping that O understands when he gets the most votes but still doesn't win. Bill Maher said that it happened to Al Gore. Definitely not funny.

I kept wondering where King was getting that stat from. How did he know the bulk of the audience was Dem? Seems like SOME conservatives and Republicans watched something because there is chatter all over the Web about this debate and the upcoming VP debate. I swear. I get that CNN wants to be the opposite of whatever FOX and MSNBC are, but damn. Slow ya roll, homie. What was that?

Chris suffers from chronic foot in mouth disorder. You can not take his verbal thuggery seriously. Most of the time he just comes off as clueless anyway. He cracks me up when he tries to talk like he understands black people, the black experience or women. He usually just comes off as a totally troglodyte. I don't know why he bothers. Oh that's right. They pay him.

Amen to that! When he shows the map, he always shows how red it is, even when his words don't match the visuals. I'm so tired of CNN, and I barely watch it.

Well, the dems just came out announcing agreements reached on the bailout. Where are the repugs? This should be strictly bi-partisan. We're fucked for sure. I hope heads roll. They are going to put it online. Maybe we can read it in sections and make a JJP report.

I read his refusal to look @ Barack as contempt as well as arrogance. He does feel that he is vastly superior to Barack as well as the overwhelming majority of americans. McCain is an asshole, and he is living up to his reputation as an asshole and a mean spirited, abusive person.

I look at it this way. The more desperate the McCain crew gets, the more that desperation comes across, the more stupid they look. I mean look back at what desperation drove them to do this week. Did that benefit them in any way, did they come out ahead because of it?

That's not to say us Obama supporters shouldn't still work our asses off to get him elected, but the tide is beginning to turn. Us political junkies and blog regulars have known that McCain has got nothing for a long time, but now even the most casual observers of the election are starting to see it too. McCain came off last night as petty and small, so any lowball tactics his campaign employs at this point is just going to reinforce that perception like steel. So in a sick, rubbernecking at a car wreck way I'm looking forward to see how low they go.

That's my rambling way of saying take a few deep breaths because this homestretch is going to be a doozy, but BO and company seem to have a handle on it and they're really good at giving McCain all the rope he needs to hang himself.
