I was living in DC when The Original Kings of Comedy came out. I headed out to the cinema hall at Union Station. Most of the audience was having a good time, but nothing too crazy - a lot of the jokes were kinda the same. But when Mac came on, the audience was in hysterics. At the time, Mac probably was the least well known of the 4 comics in that line-up. I know I didn't know him.

Then his career took off, and when he did get his own show, he and Larry Wilmore (a producer and writer) decided to put together an original show. They did not shy away from the tragedy that often is in some families, such as his sister's drug use. Or the paranoid feelings that kick in when teenagers start dating, or what to do when your kid is a bit of a geek. He dropped the "Dumb Dad" routine that is so common in sitcoms, and became a Father Knows Best with attitude in an easy chair.

Although George Carlin was a very different type of stand-up, both he and Mac were originals. Both are gonna be missed. Thankfully, we have YouTube.

Robin Harris. Another great gone too young.

I was recently recounting one of my favorite jokes from a comedy special he hosted on the early days of BET. He and Myra Jay were trading insults, and when she got her turn on stage, she said of Robin, "You know how people have 'Welcome' mats in front of their houses? Robin house so small, his mat just say, "Well, . . . ."

Doesn't translate so well typed out, but believe me, it was funny as hell.

Just as with hip hop artists, the talent, edge, and creativity exist with comedians, but because they don't fulfill an existing stereotype or travel a well-worn path, they get no play. They aren't "marketable," though no one has even tried to market them yet.

Bernie Mac will truly be missed. I consider him to be the best, most original, creative, and funniest of the Kings of Comedy. He made me cringe with his dirtiness and political-incorrectness, but most importantly, he made me laugh.

RIP, Bernie.

I was hooked the minute I saw him on Def Comedy Jam with that crazy a$% shirt and the jeans with his face painted on 'em. And stayed hooked after I understood that the joke of 'adopting' his sister's children was really his true life story

Bernie was a hero to all of us. He remained true to where he came from and true to all of us. He made us think and was funny in a side-splitting way. He was able to maintain his dignity--always, and his sense of personal style was always impeccable. He will be greatly missed. My prayers are with his friends and family.
