Obama Will Meet Palestinian Leaders in the West Bank

    http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/15/us/politics/1...

He won't go into a mosque HERE, but meet with leaders in PALESTINE.

Oh, what a fun photo op THAT will be.

    Consider the source.

It's a leak by an Israeli official to the NY Times.

    Craig,

Anytime I see Obama and Palestine in the same sphere, I know it's a hit job.

Glad you're not the only one who didn't believe that piece by the Black teenager. Didn't smell right to me either.

Thinking of posting a tinfoil hat piece on Jesse Jackson, but dunno.

Michelle Obama To Become an AKA – will Barack have to renounce Black Greeks too?

Let me start by saying that I am a staunch Barack Obama supporter – and have been since way before last year. I am also a big supporter of Black Greek Lettered Organizations (BGLO’s) – I have been a member of Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc for over 28 years. Additionally, my Fiancée, my Mother, and several of my nieces/cousins are members of Alpha Kappa Alpha.

Today, I read the announcement that Michelle Obama has accepted the invitation to become an AKA and my first reaction was, “How cool is that!?” (My mother is at the AKA centennial Boule right now.) Then I made a mistake of reading the online commentary on the Washington Post and thought to myself, “Here we go, again.”

The haters were in full force. Everything from cries of “Elitism” that Mrs. Obama would join a sorority to “Racism” that she would join an Historically-black one. Anyone who knows anything about Black Greek Lettered organizations knows that they were founded at a time when Blacks were not allowed to join their white counterparts. Those same people also know that these groups have a strong history of community service and uplift to the black community. Like any institutions, they have had their challenges (hazing and other unsavory behaviors) but the over-riding legacy is one of achievement and service.

Unfortunately, this is yet another institution that White America doesn’t understand and I fear that Barack Obama will be pressured to renounce/reject or otherwise, disavow AKA and BGLO’s in general. If that happens, I will be upset beyond words.

There has been this over-arching theme that Barack Obama should “transcend” race. To me, that translates to “He should distance himself from the Black parts of his background/culture that make whites uncomfortable.” I get the fact that he is bi-racial and I think that’s a wonderful thing. Unfortunately, he has brown skin, he married an African American woman, and he “Looks Black” – therefore, he is seen by the vast majority of people as “Black.”

On the strength of this, he constantly has to prove (beyond a shadow of a doubt) his patriotism, his intelligence, his savvy, and everything else. And anything that might be just a little “out of the white norm” is something that must distance himself from, lest whites become uncomfortable.

I, for one, am tired of that.

At a point in time, whites will have to learn and accept that there ARE some unique parts of Black Culture (especially HBCU’s, BGLO’s, The Black Church, Black Professional Associations) that were created as a direct result of racism, segregation, and White privilege. I hear white people say, “If there were a “White Entertainment Network,” you Blacks would be totally upset. People who say that really don’t get it – until BET, ALL networks were the “White Entertainment Network.” Before Alpha Kappa Alpha, they were ALL “White Sororities.”

These things are a part of our history and we shouldn’t have to disband them now that the laws of the land prevent segregation. More importantly, Barack Obama shouldn’t have to turn his back on them just because White America doesn’t understand them.

I understand that Barack Obama has to appease those who have discomfort in order to get elected. That said, he shouldn’t have to disavow his Blackness nor renounce those things that are unique to Black culture. If so, he will end up losing more than an election. He’ll have lost himself.

Iota: Nice article! 1. In order to PRE-EMPTsome of the critics, I wonder how many legislators [let's just start there] belong to GLOs (white & Black).
    2. Then we can move to looking at how many "appointments" of aides, etc. were a result of those affiliations.
    ROLE CALL please!
Actually, I'm not opposed to the GLOs. I just want to SHUT the mouths of those who are going to start "some MESS"!
    Best wishes "sister" Mrs. Obama!
  • jelana · 1 year ago
Perhaps I am showing my age but everyone I know belongs to BGLO's with the exception of some that belong to the secret societies. What should she have joined?
  • rikyrah · 1 year ago
I have no qualms with her being in AKA. I would have guessed her to be a Delta, but AKA is just fine. Heck, if she was a Link, I wouldn't have cared.

Like I said, maybe this will actually get her a mention at The Black Socialite..LOL
  • CraigHickman · 1 year ago
Despite Madree Penn White being my great grandmother, I've little knowledge of how many BGLO's work. Is an honorary member considered the same as a pledged member?
  • GreenLadyHere · 1 year ago
Jelana: I think that I need to start all over again. I was stimulated by this article to think that someone was going to criticize this HONOR given to Mrs. Obama. So I was attempting to address that criticism by stating that there is NOTHING WRONG with membership in a GLO. I went to a predominantly white undergraduate university and the GLO's practically ran campus life. And after graduation, GLO grads got jobs and other appointments based on that membership - not necessarily merit. You know - a kind of AFFIRMATIVE ACTION!
In my attempt to state that Mrs. Obama should NOT be criticized for joining a BGLO, I attempted to diffuse an argument that had not yet been made-that BGLO's favor each other and this could be seen as "elitist".
So since no one has made that argument and I appeared to be "debating" myself, I apologize. :>)
So - bottom line- CONGRATULATIONS Mrs. Obama.
    Oh, I am a BGLO member. :>)
  • rikyrah · 1 year ago
Now I comprehend. Sorry, I just don't think of the GLO as 'elitist'.

    Now, THE LINKS and BOULE?

    Yes, but, I still wouldn't have cared..LOL

Next they'll be demanding that Malia and Sasha give up their black Barbie dolls and give away the Barbie Mansion. Why should their black Barbies have a mansion, that's elitism! They should have a cardbox box with wrapping paper as the wallpaper like the rest of us!
  • lamh32 · 1 year ago
I agree that some "people" may try to take issue, but I'm just guessing here, but I don't believe that Obama and Michelle didn't discuss the pros or cons of accepting this invitation. To me, and I would hope most people, the pros will outway the cons. I'm kinda of the mind that the only way to confront some racial bias/prejudice is to just don't worry about what the racist mind would do when making decisions. If we as a people didn't do things because we thought that white america would misunderstand, then we may not have had the civil rights struggle at all, or for that matter we would not now be on the precipice of what may be the 1st African American president of the United States and the first "minority" president of a Western nation.
  • GreenLadyHere · 1 year ago
    lamh: Co-signing! Thank you.
  • rikyrah · 1 year ago
    I agree.
  • Jay · 1 year ago
I just read she accepted the invitation based on the contingency that it was "non-exclusive", which means she wants to be able to join any other BGLO in the future if she choices. She said she’d like to work with all the orgs.

Mmmm on honorary memberships in general and double mmmm on “non-exclusivity”

    Mmmmm = me no likey.
  • Sepia · 1 year ago
That is not true. The "non-exclusive" part was about working with the other BGLOs.
  • GreenLadyHere · 1 year ago
Sepia: Co-signing. Actually, I read about a "Sister 2 Sister"[I think that was its name; could be mistaken] Conference that was made up of a coalition of sorority-BGLO's. It happened last month. I'll try to look for a reference.

Why can't comedians land any punch lines on Obama? http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/15/us/politics/1...

... maybe because all the comedians listed are white?

It's too bad there aren't any black comedians anywhere. Nope, no comedians who are African-American that I know of.

Angelica's Math just doesnt add up.

I read her article, and sadly, I can say this young sistah has either lied , or is very misinformed.

    Her Words

Ironically, I began to actually start watching more political shows, reading excerpts from candidates' books online, and researching their backgrounds before deciding to be a McCain supporter.

However, unless she's only basing her research on the past 6 months (time btwnJMC AND BO SECURINGNOMINATIONS) she's not being fully genuine. First she say's it was to block her parents Black Barack vote, now she say's its b/c of her month research. Either way its BS.. Esp. since at no point in this article does she reveal who she supported in the primaries.

I wont even attempt to go into the Kilpatrick and Hitler comparisions. I think Jill did hit that perfectly. I will however make mention of her comment of how things have been ran in the past 8 yrs. Using my vey bad math that would make her either 10 or 11 when G.W.B took office. I cant speak for Angelica, but I know when I was 10, I wasnt following politics. Things like Oliver North, Iran Contra, and James Baker meant nothing to me.

    Im jus sayin.

I couldnt agree more with the above comments made that this is a fake article.

Obama Forces McCain Flip-Flop On Afghanistan
McCain was set to discuss the economy, with an address on Afghanistan scheduled for Thursday. But the campaign ditched its planned focus on jobs (although not its banner) to follow Obama's lead -- not only by talking about national security but by joining him in calling for more American troops in Afghanistan.

Nearly an hour after Obama finished his D.C. speech, in which he repeated his call for "at least two additional combat brigades" to be sent to Afghanistan, McCain stepped to his podium across the country in New Mexico and tried to one-up his Democratic rival. As McCain's website now says, the Arizona Republican wants "at least three additional brigades" for the fight in Afghanistan.
As the saying goes, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

Quinnipiac And The Demographics Of The Race
    15 Jul 2008 04:29 pm

Most horse-race polls at this point are somewhat useless, but they do contain some interesting internal information:

Independent voters split 44 - 44 percent, the independent Quinnipiac University poll finds.

Sen. McCain has a slight 47 - 44 percent edge among men voters and a larger 49 - 42 percent lead among white voters.

But black voters back Sen. Obama 94 - 1 percent, while women support him 55 - 36 percent.

Obama leads 63 - 31 percent among voters 18 to 34 years old
    and 48 - 44 percent among voters 35 to 54,

while voters over 55 split with 45 percent for McCain and 44 percent for Obama.

Poll Shows Racial Division on Obama’s Candidacy

Barack is leading McCain 45 to 39 among registered voters and this is the headline and the lede?

I'm so tired of this nonsense.
  • rikyrah · 1 year ago
    Craig,

Over at the WaPO Poll, he's up 50-42, but guess what's the lead?

What do they lead with? McCain is more knowledgeable on world affairs.

The blogger who posted this had this commentary:

The media can't have Obama blow this thing open and sink their profits they expect for the fall. They need this race close. They need this race down to the wire. They need controversy. Obama can't win this thing running away or a lot of people lose a lot of money. Remember that when you read Halperin and watch TV.

I called 60%-40% in the beginning of June. I did not anticipate the media's response. Naive me. Well, McCain is such a bad candidate, that even with the entire media establishment propping him up, he still hasn't broken 45% in any poll that I have seen besides a daily tracking poll. 45% won't cut it come November. By the way, I think things are so bad in this country that people are paying attention. That bodes well for Obama, and I still think my 60%-40% is still possible.

    That about sums it up.

According to a few polls. A midwestern presidential candidate is almost unheard of. And the midwest (and west) seems to be liking it.
