Jack and Jill Politics: This Is Not Journalism

I finally agree with something you guys posted! Kidding, I have agreed before, but more often than not I disagree. And I have been called a "white woman" on your message boards before for having the audacity of my own opinion.

Anyway, though Dowd is clearly an Obama supporter, I did notice throughout the primary her creepy disdain for women leaders. She attacked Hillary with venom, and of course it was often necessary. But something more seemed to be seething underneath.

This is why black folks need to take issue with the media's maltreatment of Hillary and her campaign. Because they will be coming for Michelle next. And then you, and then me.

There doesn’t have to be a “whitey” tape since Michelle has already made it clear -- in at least several statements –- how and what she thinks, e.g. “As a black man, you know, Barack can get shot going to the gas station.” and “..utilize all of my present and future resources to benefit (the black) community first and foremost.” and the ‘Victim’ tape interview – “of the horrible legacies of racism and discrimination and oppression." and “we’re a country that is just downright mean” and “Folks are just jammed up, and it’s gotten worse over my lifetime. And, doggone it, I’m young. Forty-four!” and the same theme -- again -- “And things have gotten progressively worse throughout my lifetime -- through Democratic and Republican administrations -- it hasn't gotten better for regular folks.” and “That before we can work on the problems, we have to fix our souls -- our souls are broken in this nation.” and probably the biggest one - “Hope is making a comeback and, let me tell you, for the first time in my adult life, I am proud of my country.”, etc. The ‘Victim’ card over and over again…this one was really cute – “I know we’re spending — I added it up for the first time — we spend between the two kids, on extracurriculars outside the classroom, we’re spending about $10,000 a year on piano and dance and sports supplements and so on and so forth.” Poor Michelle…

There doesn’t have to be a “whitey” tape, even the Obama campaign sees the many other problems that Michelle presents, and are “planning to shore up Michelle with her own slick and quick war room staffed by top operatives from previous campaigns.

Karmi, thanks for bringing the funny as usual. The job is working my nerves today so I need the laughs.

Micheller seems really nice in person, but I don't think she understands how her comments translate to Average Americans. Living in the Black professional Mecca of Chicago can damage your ability to understand how others view your commentary.
  • dbdb · 1 year ago
Just curious danielle, to what would you attribute Dowd's unrelenting criticism of our current president?
  • Mac G · 1 year ago
I just hate how the right and the media demonizes Michelle before the American public truly gets to know who she is as a person.

I know this is a pattern were Dem Prez candidates wives(Olympia,Hillary,Tipper,Teresa) get roasted by the GOP/media but the GOP stepford wives take no such smear heat.

It is extremely unfair that all people know about Michelle is that america comment.

I hope that changes and I would like to know more about their kids.

It is the soon to be first family!

    Coming for Michelle next?

They have been going after Michelle all along! Bill O'Reilly got the ball rolling a while back ("I don't want to go on a lynching party against Michelle Obama unless there's evidence, hard facts, that say this is how the woman really feels.""

    http://tinyurl.com/5cu6he

As far as conservatives and garden-variety Obama haters harping on and exaggerating Michelle's "proud" comments - just know that any conversation on Black Americans and patriotism ought to include the Double V Campaign and many other aspects of the Black contributions to American history that are routinely ignored and/or marginalized by Whites and Blacks who don't know or care about their own history.

as a cautionary tale, it's helpful to read vanity fair's dissection of how this worked in al gore's campaign, much of which dropped from the mouth of that insane maureen dowd:

    http://www.vanityfair.com/politics/features/2007/10/gore200710

this is a serious danger, folks. in the absence of a media that cares anything about truth and justice, simply saying something is sufficient. it is not necessary to have facts to back it up. and since our media "elites" tend to act like 6th graders, once something is said, is said and that is that. it makes the rounds like wildfire and they begin to quote one another as the source rather than looking to the original to see whether the reporting was valid.

i can't stress this enough: this is dangerous, terribly so. what happened with gore happened with kerry four years later. i have no doubt that the right wing smear machine is just winding up.

all of this information that we know needs to be tidied up into one of those around-the-world viral emails and disseminated now. we can't afford to let this get out there unchecked. that's been the problem with democrats, we always expect people will do the right thing, see through the silliest shit, and they never do. never fucking do.

"This is why black folks need to take issue with the media's maltreatment of Hillary and her campaign."

Exactly what maltreatment are you referring to? I'm guessing that at least some of what you're calling maltreatment, I call "telling the truth". Not only that, but "they're" going to come after Michelle regardless.

how can we be sure she is not one of the living dead? this is the real question. but if anybody will cover it, it will be maureen dowd.
  • ding · 1 year ago
for me, the anticipated pundit attacks on michelle obama is part and parcel of a longer, and disturbing, tactic to extend the smearing of a candidate. the attacks are a perfect way to cloud issues, distract candidates and create cardboard thin targets for the electorate to get upset about, rather than concentrate on real issues. but, of course, this isn't anything new.

theresa heinz and howard dean's wife stand out in my mind. dowd's columns on these women were some of the most vicious pieces i'd ever read, akin to the malicious entries from a high school girl's 'slam book.' for dowd, heinz was a european rich bitch and dean was a neglectful frump who didn't care about her husband enough to stump for him.

as for why dowd consistently uses wives as target practice, i don't know. she's following the pack of media attack dogs? she seems to sincerely dislike women, in general, and women in partnerships, in particular; the more functional a couple, the more incensed and bizarrely hostile her columns get.

i've read MoDo for years and i'll chalk up her bile to a wide streak of self-hating misogyny.
  • kathy · 1 year ago
A lot of Maureen Dowd's posts about Senator Clinton were filled with sexist language during the campaign.
  • TruthSeeker · 1 year ago
    kathy,

    What kind of sexist language?
  • lamh · 1 year ago
I would hope that Clinton supporters like Sheila Jackson Lee, and Stephanie Tubbs Jones will defend Michelle Obama against these attacks as well as they have defended Hilary against Obama's "supposed attacks"

    Where are they now????
  • Black on Campus · 1 year ago
This will be the true test: when spoilers start to use hateful and misogynist language to describe (and debunk) Michelle Obama, will all those who decried the "sexist" treatment of Hillary Clinton step up and have her back? How about when -- and I hope this doesn't happen -- we begin to see that insidious intersection of racism and sexism intertwine. I hope Michelle Obama is spared any critiques that invoke (however subtly) the stereotypes of the Mammy, the Jezebel, or the Saphire; but if (and when) they do, will the opponents of anti-Hillary sexism speak out against it?

I think it's a toss up at this point.

This whole thing is a fairy tale.
For people in the public and in the media to act as if some black people in this country have not had experiences that were not pleasant is crazy!

Life for some blacks has not been no crystal stairs, even with an Ivy League education. Even Justice Thomas said that he graduated with no friends.

My cousin graduated from the #2 boarding/high school in the USA, has a dual degree in math/psych, graduated top of her class from UNC-CH. She had offers for employment all across this country and abroad.

Do some white people really think that being brilliant and qualified excluded her from prejudice and bigotry at work? Hell no!

Shit aint always pretty or perfect for some people. It can be a struggle even when you do things "right".

This campaign is bringing out the worst in people. They are acting simple.

If traveling the entire country for the first time, showed Mrs. O that there is more good than bad, then, damnit, she should feel new pride in her country. Everyone should be happy to her that report from her.

So in one breath 200 million people can say that they were surprised when Obama won in Iowa with a 98% white population. But when a black person acknowledges that they may have felt that same surprise as to what surprised everyone else in the world, then said black person is crazy, militant, anti-American or what just a regular ole complaining ass black?

Give me a break...I am with Bill on that line.

You know the right wing is desperate when they have to resort to bashing and smearing the candidates wife. They don't have a plan. They don't have an agenda. They don't have anything positive to offer. Bashing and smearing is all they have. That might have worked in the past, but it's not going to work with $4.00+ per gallon gasoline, no health care, the mortgate forclosure crisis, the food crisis, outsourcing and spending trillions in Iraq. Let em bash and smear Michelle Obama all they want, it's not going to help them.

dowd is cracked on the subject of the clintons:

    http://topics.nytimes.com/top/opinion/editorialsandoped/oped/columnists/maureendowd/index.html

she also has a constant habit of turning male democrats into "sissies" and effeminate candy ass men who she'll then compare to the big dicked hard assed republican of the moment. dowd is a lunatic. she has serious, serious problem. now she will turn all of her vitriole and her twisted sexual obsessions on the obamas.

she's already started with referring to barack obama as "obambi" and painting him as an elete, effete half man.

Maureen Dowd can't believe that bArack, bill, Poppy Bush have chosen to not leave their wives for her fabulous azz.

How I wish Aaron Sorkin had married her so the world would not have to subjected to her envy and rage at having a Pulitzer but not having a man.

Let me just say, that even as a white man, Barack Obama's nomination is the first time in my adult life that I'm proud to be an American too.
  • ding · 1 year ago
Dowd's columns on her own 'difficulties' in the dating world are a fascinating (and cringe-worthy) look at her thoughts on being a woman, power, masculine attention and aging. Even her book, Are Men Necessary, wasn't so much about men but about how women like her (privileged, single and of a certain age) get ignored by men.

    Sad.
  • Mo MoDo · 1 year ago
Dowd isn't saying that The New Republic is spreading the "whitey tape" rumor. She cites TheObamaFiles.com as a place still claiming it exists. It even claims to know what that tape shows. I quote the site on my blog.

I don't believe the tape exists any more than I believe that Barack is a crypto-Muslim, but other people do. That is the scary part. Don't shoot Dowd the Messenger for pointing that out. To ignore it is a big mistake.
